I've given thought to this topic and switched up my opinions many times in the past but ultimately I think physical interaction between men and women in a scripted fantasy environment can be done as long as it's done logically and tastefully without giving any of the boys (or girls) watching on TV the wrong idea. Here is a clip of Johnny Gargano and Candice LaRae wrestling one another In no way do I see this promoting any sort of negative agenda and in fact it's almost like an art form to me. in totally okay with a woman vs man wrestling match , that should be a no brainer. But the question with Maryse is that she is just a valet. What should Ambrose do if he was slapped by a non wrestling woman.

I forget if it was Roman or Dean who gave Steph something to make her ill, and people threw temper tantrums over how lame a comeback they thought it was. Roman speared Steph and people weren't satisfied. I don't really know what people want, something like when Benoit headbutt Steph once?

I don't think that's unreasonable. I mean it is fake.

One also has to imagine that Comcast (Universal/USA) and Mattel would start to pitch fits if WWE made women "fair game" again.

I don't really like talking about it, but, I was beaten up by a male relative, a few times. In the sense of wrestling, I don't think men should hit women, and women can be "dominant", without hitting the man.

I don't think it really sends a message that women can be as violent to men as they want to be. Largely because all the women slapping men on a semi-constant basis are heels. The role of the heel valet who knows that no matter what happens the face isn't going to hit her back is one meant to generate heat. Heat largely for the whole package of her and the wrestler she's with. And sometimes, the storyline is done in a way where the valet ends up getting her just desserts some way or another, but because she's generally trying to build heat for the man she's attached to, that means the heat and retribution ends up on Miz; the valet fails to successfully run interference because the face sees it coming or it backfires wildly. Face picks up the win.
It's the good guy being above hitting a woman back just because she slapped him. Because he's the good guy. Because . Especially when wrestling, in-universe, is a whole bunch of people who are generally tough and able to take a lot of punishment, and Maryse isn't exactly being portrayed as a destroyer of worlds out there. I see this as the opposite of a problem in most cases, because the entire purpose of what's being done here is just really basic storytelling devices. Anyone who's taking this as a "message", or really anything at all from WWE as a message, has their host of issues to deal with that live entirely independent of wrestling on the whole.
A lot of the responses in this thread see the issue as too binary; yes, intergender wrestling is a thing and it isn't the Literal Worst Thing Ever, but that doesn't mean that it's all or nothing. Every 'universe' is going to have their own rules and the limitations put on them by whatever masters they're beholden to. WWE straight-up can't put on intergender matches, but by the specifications of what they can do, they're using their limitations for the sake of a storyline all the same. They know it's a double standard, and they're applying that double standard to have the bad guys do Bad Guy things. This isn't Bayley running around smacking Kevin Owens with the commentators yelling "Look at Bayley being so great and empowered" it's "Look at Maryse being cowardly and hitting someone she knows won't ever hit her back. How slimy."
There's a whole host of problems with what Stephanie does, yes, but that sits as entirely different issue, where someone who owns the company is being made to look exorbitatnyl strong and fearsome when there's literally zero reason for them to. But forget all about anything she says about feminism because her booking isn't any kind of expression of female empowerment, but Steph empowerment, and looking at it through any kind of societal lens is only falling for the carny-ass justifiactions they've given for why she needs to have wrestlers let her talk them down constantly. But at least she is, again, a heel doing it.

It only really bugs me when Steph does that to other female wrestlers and they don't do a goddamn thing. Like they're allowed to hit a finisher on her yet they just stand their like dummies and take it? Also that weird Tom Phillips thing where she slapped him a bunch of times and it came off like a Bsdm roleplay.

Nah I'm good without it. Even seeing inter gender matches makes me a little bit uneasy to be honest.

Give her an atomic drop or hire someone to throw pies at her. There's other ways to gain comeuppance than pile driving her to the ground, mounting her and pummeling her. The weird (and honestly kind of disturbing, in hindsight) thing is the one moment I really remember somebody just hauling off on Stephanie, it was Chris Benoit. He's backstage with someone else I can't remember at the moment, then says "Don't you know who that is? That's Stephanie McMahon!", and then headbutts the shit out of her. That was in the ring. I think the next week (might have been Smackdown, even) there's the segment where she was talking to Trips and then walks down the aisle and encounters Benoit who asks, "How's your head?" www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKv54wWjHVc

I have no desire to watch a muscle bound wrestler slap a woman. None. I didn't watch the Joe Mixon or the Ray Rice videos either. If part of the storyline is Renee Young being blindsided by Miz "outing" her relationship on TV, then it works very well. Miz plays mind games & he won. Maryse slapping Ambrose because he she's a heel & was trying to get the DQ & retaliating on Renee all works in the storyline as well. Maryse was ejected from ringside & Miz lost his belt- heel comeuppance.
What they need to stop is Stephanie doing her own version of the Mr McMahon character.

I have no interest in seeing a much larger man hit a woman in any circumstances.
What I would like to see, though, is Stephanie McMahon cease emasculating wrestlers. There cannot be physical comeuppance (which is what we expect for heels in pro wrestling), so why continually have Stephanie bury male wrestlers when there is no way to get the upper hand on her?
It's ridiculous and infuriating.
