Glad to see they've got their finger on the pulse of why people like these movies. That said, Spawn was pretty much indicative of the 'grr, comics are gritty now you guys!' aesthetic, so that makes sense. McFarlane, along with Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld, really ushered in a god awful period in comics. A bunch of hotshot artists tried to be creators of character and story, and needless to say it all ended up as severely dated dreck. If you haven't seen it check the video of Stan Lee with Rob and Todd where they create a character in real time.Stan ask Rob what makes his character different then Cable, even though he looks a line Cable, and Rob basically gives him the exact same character traits

Remember after Deadpool made all of the money people were worried that movie studios would take the fact that it was R Rated would be the reason why it works... this right here is what people were talking about.
Just being Gory isn't why Deadpool or Logan works... stupid.

Wolverine Rip off, Cable Rip off, Shatterstar rip off, or Domino.

I'll never understand why people making movies think dark or violent equals good.

Is Spawn considered a beloved character? It seems like the HBO series is a cult favorite but I never hear anyone talk about this character anymore or are clamoring for another film.

His time was in the 90's. Just out of place now

Spawn still has a decent sized fanbase. The comic is the second best selling indy comic at lots of comic shops, behind Walking Dead. I gave up on the comic around issue 21 or 22,whenever Todd got behind and skipped an issue or two. Realized it was just a watered down ripoff of Tim Vigil's Faust comic.

I think a well written Spawn flick could work and be really cool( the material could easily be rearranged for a good story). But I don't think a horror version is the right approach. It makes Spawn himself kind of unnecessary in his own story since he's this character hanging out in the background. Kind of makes the idea of his origin unnecessary too.
Just give us Spawn boy tearing through bad guys.

Even an unrated film, there is just no way to make it without it becoming some weird horror/supernatural/hardcore porn hybrid. Having seen the unrated cut of the Faust movie.... well it is better than the 90s DTV Captain America movie and that is about it. Bad acting, script and so so FX work. Pretty sure the comic hadn't finished when the film was made,so they had to kind of change some parts. Then there is parts of the comic that they had to just avoid. Some of which are integral to the plot.

Just give it the mysterious/atmospheric horror like vibe of the HBO animated series and focus on the emotional aspect that plagues Al as he struggles between Heaven and Hell. Don't force the angels into the first film, bring them into the sequels, and while I don't see it happening, I can't see Billy Kincaid being popular in this day and age honestly for obvious reasons. Knowing Hollywood they'd try to make that character sympathetic. This is what I was going to mention. Use that HBO cartoon as the blueprint for what the movie should be, as that cartoon was a MUCH better adaptation of the SPAWN story than the 97 movie could ever hope to be.

So since Todd has been trying to get this going for years... I'm chalking this up to another "Youngblood" is totally getting a movie next year you guys! So was Rob's. I mean technically Deadpool is a Liefeld creation... except for like all of the things that make the character Deadpool... but hey even though he's not still a complete copy of Deathstroke it still counts as a Liefeld creation.

Yes, Todd, good to see you grasped the point of why/how LOGAN and DEADPOOL did so well. It was the gore. Have a cookie. I haven't seen it in almost two decades, but what were the problems with the first Spawn movie? I seem to recall it being pretty good. well for starters, in the overstuffed list of "films whose CGI hasn't aged well", Spawn is in a league of its own This is an incorrect statement. That CGI was NEVER good.
