Well, let's see what it's potentially up against in the 2-3 weeks leading up to and into it...
'White Boy Rick' - Crime Drama (3 weeks after release) 'Night School' - Kevin Hart Comedy (1 week after release) 'A Star is Born' - Musical Drama (Same-day)
Yeah, I can see it hitting that number fairly easily just based on the demographic it's aiming for. It'll probably see a fairly decent second week too, leading into the October 19th release of 'Halloween' that'll likely dominate the holiday.

It's arriving at such a low point in the season, I'm certain it'll do better than that. And that's on the general audience and morbid curiousity alone. If it gets good reviews...who knows.
I do think "A Star is Born" is gonna be a huge hit if it lives up to all the hype.

I don't know, between poor word of mouth and how much parts of that trailer have become punch lines, I'd honestly be shocked if it hit $55 million opening weekend.

Cowards; Deadpool & Logan proved that you can have an extremely successful and entertaining superhero film with a hard R rating and balking at making it for mature audiences just proves that Sony aren't confident of it without having the younger crowd.

Coward is a strong word for something they've been telegraphing for a while; though they've floated an edgy, rated-R Venom, they've been teasing a hard PG-13 movie for purposes of integrating Spider-Man into the universe once the Sony/Disney deal is over since at least the first sit-down interview with Feige and Pascal.

Okay, for real, does this movie do anything right? It seems like absolutely everything you should expect to see in a Venom movie it's going out of its way not to do.

Movie is going to suck. Might cover costs but that’s about it. Hope Hardy and Ahmed got big paydays because this isn’t going to do their careers any favours.

It's a good thing for Sony that there's at least one good Spider-Man related thing this fall that'll overshadow this movie (even if said thing is a game).

I honestly don't think that Sony/Disney deal is ending anytime soon. Sony needs Disney at this point as if Venom flops they're going want to keep that deal.

It might do ok just for the fact that there won't be much in the way of competition. Like the weekend it's out, it'll probably be 1 or 2 box office wise, and then within like two weeks be eh.

True, though a few things to keep in mind for that are that number one at the box office doesn't necessarily mean something is successful - just look at how everyone's rushing to declare Predator a bomb right now, Venom has a pretty high budget and they seem to be going heavy in advertising it, and Sony tends to set unrealistic goals for their movies (expecting Amazing 2 to make a billion when only Spidey 3 has made even kinda-sorta close to that comes to mind). I could very easily see Venom having that free weekend and still being a bust. Granted it could also surprisingly turn out to be really good, we'll see. Though I'm not exactly confident in it.

Heck they thought AM2 would make two billion

Right, by ok I mean breaking even or turning a small profit. No chance it does more even if it is good.

ASM made $750 million, but it was generally well received so I can kind of understand why Sony felt that with a strong advertising push, they could reach $1 billion or even get close to it. I think the problem was that the farther people got from ASM, the more the problems with it stood out
