Was this character just so exponentially popular they were able to overcome mostly shit reviews and an awful trailer, or is there some sort of secret genius in marketing to learn from here?

Plus, the online community have apparently embraced a bizarre love relationship between this movie's version of the symbiote and Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock.

Venom is popular mostly due to his badass character design, honestly. Rule of Cool, in TV Tropes terms. Maybe a little bit of also looking like Spidey, so some (casuals) people probably think he's just a big Spider-Man, so like him based on that.
Speaking of why Venom (the character itself) is so popular and in relation to the movie doing well at the box office...What was the orginal plan for a Venom movie supposed to be?
I just remember it being possibly related to the Raimi series...then it was Sinister Six...then it was Venom and Carnage.
It's obvious why they didn't do the Raimiverse tie in, but why didn't they go with the others at least instead of a lame and uneccessary solo-origin movie?
As has been stated a million times...Venom works way better as part of a larger story, rather than putting everything on the shoulders of just that character.
But...they also apparently don't have rights to anything other than Venom, really, so just don't make the movie at all.
But Marvel wouldn't be able to either.
I don't know!

If it was a good movie that had gotten great reviews this would all make sense. Instead we got the legendarily awful “turd in the wind” trailer, reviews were tepid at best, and somehow it made all the money. I don’t know what this says for the future of the MCU (given that it sounds like they have to absorb the Sonyverse) or comic book movies in general, but as a fan I know it depresses me. Years of absolutely top notch productions, then “a turd in the wind” outgrosses some of the best films of recent years. Ok.

Sony have the rights to use almost everything in the Spider-Verse, they just gave up the rights to do a solo Spider-Man movie without Marvel Studio's input for three solo movies in order to let Marvel use Peter Parker in three MCU team-up movies. There was some talk of once the those commitments are fulfilled Sony would refuse to extend the agreement with Marvel Studios and then merge the Tom Holland Spider-Man with the Sony Marvel Universe, but it seems that Sony have gotten cold feet over that possibility and will continue working with Marvel.

Venom is to Spider-Man, what Broly is to Goku. A big, beefy, really badass looking foe, and they get to coast a lot off of their coolness factor.

Just finished watching it for the first time and yeah, I really liked it. Went in with lowered expectations of course, but it was a fun, cute little popcorn movie. I also find the Ragnorak numbers comparison and people's subsequent disappointment interesting, as I actually liked both movies for the same reason- they knew from the get-go they weren't going for a magnum opus and just went balls to the wall. And I know this only is relevant to me, but while I like a good action scene, sometimes they trigger an anxiety attack if there's too much collateral damage. Luckily, the way they were structured here were so outlandish, there wasn't enough reality for my brain to latch on to, so I could just sit back and enjoy Also another thing that probably appealed only to me, lol, I liked how they weren't shy about using female hosts, especially the little girl and the old woman. I mark for female monsters who aren't lazy excuses for sex appeal.

If they just run with the sequels as a "buddy film" it could really make for some entertainment. Otherwise if this was not Venom and just a Sci-Fi movie about an alien species that merges with a human, it would be an MST3K episode.
