I ended up liking it WAY more than thought..
Mind you, I went in with low expectations, but it was a fun weekend action flick. Point-blank.
Hardy carries the f*** out of the film and I personally loved the dudes performance. Since I was a kid, I never thought somebody could pull off good hearted but flawed aloof dumb Eddie Brock but Hardy nails it. I know he said his kid is a fan, and if his kid reads the comics, he should be proud his dad nailed it. The commitment is undeniable. And it's one of the few times I enjoyed watching the regular guy more than the superhero embodiment. Maybe cause in my 30s I relate a lot more to dumb-well-intending-yet-pissed Brock than I do Innocent-Naive-idealist-virtuous-Parker, but I dug the dude every time he was on screen.
My boy Riz Ahmed will probably go unsung, but I loved what he did with Drake. His intentions are clear. His objectives are strong. He is a believable antagonist. He grounds the shit out of it for me cause I can see a dude like that in the real world clearly thinking he's in the right.
Michelle Williams, bless her soul, is there to get paid. It's serviceable but shit give it to a girl who would give a shit.
I heard a lot about graphics..and they're shoddy at times, look great at times (mainly cause of the lightning and asthetic of Venom) but they're nowhere as distractingly bad as say the graphics in Black Panther are. The end fight scene is a bit of a mess, and the symbiotes blur into one another in almost that Michael Bay Transformera CGI-Mashing-With-CGI shit. And if there's a sequel, the look of Venom should definitely be refined. Think ...Bay Bumblebee to how the new Bumblebee looks.
As for Venom..it's fun. Hardy has just as much fun voicing Venom as he does playing Brock. If there's one thing I think this film scored with was the dynamic between Brock and the symbiote. To quote my girlfriend (who doesn't know a god damn thing about comics) "Venom was like his dumb, dangerous puppy". And it works. And it's cute. And it's funny.
The life foundation stuff (sans Riz) is probably what boggs the movie down more than anything but I get it's a necessary evil (literally) because the lack of MCUs Spider-Man..
...which, I was thinking and man, I don't even think that would work, even if the stars aligned. This Eddie and Hollands Spider-Man are just not compatible. In any way. I kinda can't blame Sony for saying "f*** it" and going for it because I feel Marvel knows they scored a hit with Holland and are probably aiming to get some mileage out of him. I don't see him mixing it up with any of that kind of symbiote material for years, if ever.
And even..
..speaking of a possible sequel. I'm not someone that clamors for movies to go "Rated R" but it should absolutely go Rated R. Especially with who I just mentioned. Go full on with the language, the horror element, the violence. Take the risk, it'd probably pay off. "Venom" at often times feels like a movie that wants to be Rated R and pulls it on back.
If I could compare it to another comic flick, I'd compare it, funnily enough, to The Amazing Spider-Man. Where it's alright, hokey at times, but does cool shit sometimes that you want to see more of.
So it's a fun action flick. It's not terrible. It's not great. It's a fun action flick. To quote the 20-something year old kid behind me in the theater "I liked it. It wasn't great. I might hate it if I watched it again". I concur, young nerdy hipster..but watching it once was a lot of fun.

{Spoiler}{Spoiler}the Cletus scene wasn't as bad as I thought. I'm not a fan of Woody as a person, I admit he's a solid actor and in that small scene, it actually did it for me. And I was thinking if a sequel does happen, Woody and Hardy would probably have great chemistry. And even the wig kinda works despite looking stupid! Lol
