I honestly think this is leading to an RKO pinfall in like 5 seconds. As much as that would be hilarious, I don't think that would entirely please people who actually paid for the Backlash PPV... I expect the US Title to main event, honestly. Besides, do you think they'll be paying to see Jinder Mahal wrestle?

I mean... maybe. He's not horrible in the ring or on the mic, and he's 1000% not going to win the title, so as a short one-off program that at least gives him the modicum of credibility as being a former title challenger... it's something. They've been edging him up the card for a while since teaming him with Rusev, but this definitely feels like a big bump for him.
I don't love it or hate it, but as a short program, it could help Jinder a little bit.

Threat as in he could beat Orton clean? HAHAHAHAHA! Good one.
Threat as in he could screw Orton out of the title with his Boys? Yeah, but I don't really see the reason for it other than they want to give Orton someone people will boo (I mean face AJ would certainly out pop Orton) since no one wants to see Mahal win the title, not even his parents or his Boys.

I mean, it's possible. It's also possible to drop this full can of Coca Cola on my big toe right now, but I'm not gonna do it.

WWE has done this before, maybe not at this level, but it has been done. Bradshaw, former cowboy, outlaw, Acolyte for the Undertaker, and tag team champion turned lower-mid card act is suddenly transformed into a rich, spoiled Texas tycoon. He was surrounded by his "Cabinet" of the Bashams et al. Nobody bought it at first, but he grew into the role and became a legit main eventer. Now, this would be even more of a rags to riches twist, but it is not completely unparalleled.
I'll say this - watching that promo tonight, Jinder LOOKED like a main event heel. The crowd reacted like he WAS a main event heel. Every main event wrestler doesn't have to be a technical and/or aerial master. A championship heel is built through storytelling and psychology, not workrate, Japanese submission holds, and flippy monkey spots.

This is what smarks must have felt like in 2004 when Bradshaw got a main event push Well, Bradshaw was at least marginally popular during APA's later legacy run. I'd say it's closer to when Jack Swagger won the MITB (and then the title within that same week) following a year of basically only jobbing on RAW.

Jabbing myself with a spork sounds preferable to watching a Jinder Mahal Main Event PPV
Sounds more enjoyable too.

This is what smarks must have felt like in 2004 when Bradshaw got a main event push Pretty much. I remember a ton of "Vince is out of touch" comments - not for who he was pushing, but for all of the allusions to JR Ewing. (Beating Eddie didn't help.) But the main issue, at least around the people I was with at the time, was his ring work. It wasn't so much that he was bad, but that he wasn't on the same level as Chris Jericho or AJ Styles or Samoa Joe.

Sure, but that was followed by the return to the old "Bradshaw" cow bell gimmick and the nearly two years spent in the hardcore title curtain jerk role. NOBODY saw a singles, main event, championship run coming from Bradshaw. NOBODY. Anyone who says they did is lying.

Honestly? Yeah, anybody can be booked as a threat...but I dunno about Jinder.
I mean, it's new and different and honestly it's probably just for one PPV. Why not see what the guy can do with some goons, maybe get some decent heat. SD is all for letting things simmer and build, and 8 times out of 10 it usually leads to decent things..why not see where this goes at least?

JBL didn't win the title until around two months after the gimmick change and was pretty well established at least around the upper card at that point, especially when you consider the dearth of top talent SmackDown was suffering then.

Its worth noting that business really wasn't great after JBL won the title. Not saying he tanked things on SD completely, but there was hardly an upswing in live events or ratings when he won, nor did he ever really gain either throughout his title reign.
On occasions a sudden main event push can work for business. It didn't with Bradshaw and I doubt it will with Jinder.

A few days ago, if someone had told me that Jinder was going to be #1 contender, I would've asked him how the rest of the roster died.

Right now Orton has to be kicking his feet up, eating some doritos, and laughing.
Just avoid the elbow and you'll be okay, Randy.

How to book someone as a threat: Beat people in wrestling matches
They need to drop the arabic foreigner that hates america ASAP, we are not in 2005, you can not get away with that stuff anymore. Just let him have his little stable with the Bollywood boys and beat people like an oldschool heel. Just cheat and use the two lackeys. He will probably be the most hated guy in WWE...it will be go away heat but I dont think Vince ever cared about that.

For what it's worth, I was at the show tonight in Louisville and, I don't know how it came across on TV, but Jinder got the most heat of the entire night. Sure, it was the played out evil foreigner kind of heat, but heat is heat. I'm intrigued to see where it goes. Also, steroid jokes aside, the dude is JACKED and at least has the look of a star. So, yeah, it's possible.
