Here's how the movie goes; Mariah Carey's character is intentionally orphaned by an addict mother (who has a cameo later in the movie), befriends two other girls, they become a dive bar troupe, are signed by a sleazy producer, the producer tells Carey to ditch her partners, who are never seen again, she meets a nicer person who she keeps rejecting, and is mortified with the death of sleazy producer. The director clearly didn't know what he was doing, if you listened to the commentary. Wow... This sounds terrible. I have also read about how a lot of things were anachronistic with a film that was supposedly set in the 1980's. Again; the director did not know shit, so clothes, stories, and television were all wrong for the time period. There's even a scene where a photograph changes in the span of 3 seconds ("artistic liberty", says the guy).

The Darkest Hour, I'll be shocked if anyone else here recognises that movie, if you do I pity you.

This is clearly the worst movie of all time... it's just a dude sneezing... WHERE'S THE STORY ARC FRED OTT?! The Darkest Hour, I'll be shocked if anyone else here recognises that movie, if you do I pity you. Wikipidea lists 3 ... I'm assuming you aren't a time traveler so the one about Churchill coming out in November probably isn't the one you are talking about... and I doubt you'd be talking about a movie from 1919 in this discussion... so the Russian Sci Fi movie?

No doubt about it for me, definitely Battlefield Earth. As horrible as it was and is, I will at least give Travolta credit for recognizing out bad it is. He flat out admitted that it was more of something he wanted to do rather than making a good movie.

Like others have said, what qualifies as bad?
Is it a film that has a lot of stock footage like Silent Night, Deadly Night 2 or The Wild World of Batwoman?
Is it films that are spectacularly bad like Battlefield Earth or Glitter?
Is it a film made by a director with high hopes and poor vision like Birdemic, Manos, or Plan 9?
Others here have a good point about bad comedies.

A movie I watched at a friend's house that also has that unfortunate trait of picking the worst stuff out of redbox was Kruel. Just an awful excuse for a thriller.
On stuff that was a big deal? Probably Southland Tales. The movie that convinced me Donnie Darko was a fluke and the director was a hack. The directors cut of Donnie Darko confirmed that, ugh.

Probably the worst I've seen in a theater are the two following movies, which some many claim do not exist They are terrible adaptations, but also terrible in their own right. There are so many worse movies out there though that neither would probably sniff the top 50 worst movies of all time. Definitely top ten in terms of disappointment though.

Funny Games
I don't care how much worse other movies can be on a technical or writing level (although Funny Games is pretty bad on both accounts to begin with), but none of them accuse you of being just as bad as child murderers for having different tastes than their director.

I've seen plenty of bad films, but nothing to me is ever as painfully bad as an unfunny comedy. They're just excruciating to sit through. Completely agree. I remember Funny People being advertised as this totally hilarious movie and it wasn't funny at all. It was such a hard slog to sit through and I stuck it out just waiting to get a laugh just once and it never happened. It was brutal.

My pick is actually listed: Exorcist II - The Heretic. I have quite a collection of horrible B - movies, but they all have at least something going for them. Exorcist II is just absolutely mind numbingly boring and really hard to make through. The only somewhat worthwhile scene was basically taken from the original Exorcist. At least Exorcist III made up for it.

The Jetsons Movie. It's the one movie that I can remember leaving the theater to walk around in the lobby because I was so disinterested and bored. To this day, I try to never leave the theater until a movie is over.

To me, its Monster A Go Go.
Even the worst movies of all time like Plan 9 From Outer Space, Manos the Hands of Fate, Battlefield Earth etc, have some charm to them. They can be enjoyed in some fashion. Hell, even the worst comedies or horror movies of all time can be enjoyed by someone because whats funny and whats scary are subjective.
But Monster A Go Go is just a completely joyless experience. Nothing about it makes any sense, no charm, there is nothing about it. Its just there. It somehow exists.

For me, the criteria of a bad movie are as follows:
- How much did it cost? If it's a low budget film, I can forgive that. - What did it do for the main actors? Did it help them? Did they come out of it looking bad? - Is it well made? Are the production values satisfactory? - Does the story make sense beyond a reasonable suspension of disbelief? Is it free of plotholes? - What is the quality of the screenplay? - What is the quality of the acting performances? - What were the expectations going into it, from a critical or financial point of view?
For these reasons, Battlefield Earth is the worst. It fails almost every test.

I have a specific criteria for calling something the worst. It's not just that it's bad, it's more specifically the absence of anything good. There are awful films that you can get a ton of enjoyment out of or see that it was made with good intentions but with little actual talent. It's a different story when you watch a thoroughly mediocre film that is clearly going through the motions to the extent where you can't even enjoy watching it.

Another one like this is "The Last Horror Movie", It basically has a go at you for liking horror movies. f*** that noise. As for my criteria for Worst movie is "Do I get ANY enjoyment out of it at all?"
