FAMILY GUY. This season was good but nothing really bold or hysterical. To me, they've finally (and sadly) reached that point the SIMPSONS got to around s11 -- it's there, they're putting a show out, and I don't.....good grief don't like saying this.....I don't need to watch anymore. FRASIER also went on about 4 or 5 years too long. Once Niles' pursuit of Daphne was over, show just wandered to a conclusion (a few years later) that I didn't even stick around for. Generally any show that tries to continue after a main star/character leaves. ....That 70's show (while an ensemble cast Eric was the central character since it took place mostly in his house and his family.), etc. Oh gosh, T7S was about 2 or 3 into "what's the point anymore?" mode before Eric left. It only lasted one season after Topher Grace left; though it was allowed to have the ending I always wanted (last episode ends on 1/1/80). Had they not done that dreadful That 80's Show spinoff, I wouldn't have minded them renaming T7S and adjusting to the new decade a bit more, to give it all some progression out of that era. Instead it was stuck in the late '70s for several years and everything felt pinned up against a wall. I couldn't disagree more about Frasier, I loved every minute of it. Yes, yes, yes on That 70's Show though.

Big Bang Theory-Even the people I know that are huge fans of the show keep talking about how it should have ended years ago. Law and Order-One Lemmy was gone the show took a major downhill slide. L&O SVU-Went to total crap once Haggerty took over. CSI CSI Miami Man, I watched a lot of L&O but I would have watched more if Lemmy was on it. As far as Big Bang goes, I'm a fan, it's not that the quality has dipped badly, it's that the cast is way too bloated. There's 10 main characters now. Generally each character gets a story, each episode is 20 minutes, so at best each story only has about 4 minutes.

Facts of Life. Once they're looking like they're in their 30s, they should've just done a spinoff. But the show is great. Just tried to milk it a little too long. And 3-hour Monday Night RAWs. Cousin Pippa for the loss!!! Less so, Beverly Ann FTL. (I remember I HATED Cloris Leachman for years for replacing Charlotte. What was I thinking, though?) How about Saved By The Bell: The New Class? Original SBTB was OK, pushing it with the Tori episodes which were taped after the graduation. But TNC should NOT have gone on as long as it did. Revolving door casts, Belding and Screech becoming caricatures....

I find that most American serialized dramas really don't need anything beyond 5 seasons, which still seems like too much sometimes. This problem is exacerbated if these shows are network-based, when they're 22-26 episodes a season.

Pretty much any sitcom that lasts longer than 6 seasons.
Six is usually the perfect number in terms of telling all the stories that deserve to be told, the cast are usually kept intact, the writing is still quite sharp and original. After that and most shows start to feel like they're running on fumes. The characters are heavily flanderized, the plots are very thin or just downright terrible, and the actors are usually ready to move on to other projects.
The only ones I can think of that I enjoyed past a Season 6 and right until the end was 30 Rock, Parks & Rec, Malcolm in the Middle and The King of Queens. Scrubs almost made it onto that list and then Season 9 ended up happening.

Prison Break shouldn't have lasted more than 1 season. End it just after they've escaped with the cops chasing them. Perfect ending, no resolution needed. Yeah, they kinda painted themselves into a corner by having them escape after one season. I could see the season afterwards being their escape season, but then they pulled the weird Mexican prison shit, flipping the script, and it just lost all of it's momentum.

Night Court should have cut that last season.
Married With Children went so long I couldn't tell you when it ended; I just stopped watching.

Simpsons is the key answer. When your prime was not one, not two, but TWENTY seasons ago, it may be time to stop. I love the Simpsons to death, but I haven't kept up with it in years. It should have ended years ago, and I love this show and I grew up on it. That 70s Show. No way they were going to keep it the same after Topher Grace left the show. It went on a little longer than necessary, if a lot. For a show that was set in the 1970's, the show had to try to make it seem like it was set in 4 or 5 years, but it lasted 8 years. Also, in regards to the timeline, there were some Christmas episodes put in, which really made things more confusing.

Wasn't the Star Wars episode in the first season? That was kinda weird because Star Wars came out in 1977 and the first season supposedly took place in 1976.

Supernatural being on, I think, season 12 now, is butt f***ing ridiculous. I lost interest around....whenever the Leviathans were around, whatever season that was, and I bet I held on longer than most.

The license plate at the end of each episode that tells you what year the episode is supposed to be set in was changed to '77 just so they could justify doing a Star Wars episode.

It's one of those things that kinda happens with any decade show. It sorta becomes a conglomeration of the entire decade instead of how it would have been.

The original run of Scooby Doo series. I think it would have been better to have ended things after The Scooby Doo Show instead they brought Scrappy in. The first season where the show kept its original format was okay but once they dropped Daphne, Fred, and Velma the show went to pot. Then you had the western shorts toward the end that took out Scooby and Shaggy but kept Scrappy. When Daphne came back it did help the show a bit but they still chose to focus on Scrappy. Then you had the 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo. First let me say I think they had an interesting concept but it was so poorly executed. As if Scrappy was not annoying enough of a character they brought in Flim Flam. Finally after they did this they finally ended it.
I always look at a Pup Named Scooby Doo to be a reboot of Scooby Doo. They went back to the original format. Brought back everyone, and dropped Scrappy.

I'll go with Seinfeld. I wouldn't say the last season was outright bad, but there were some real stinkers in there. It became clear the crew wanted to be done. I think it ended right around when it should've. It was great through its 7th season, then Larry David left and it was alright for season 8. Season 9 was on the verge of being bad, it was losing a lot of its charm and a lot of the humor was just the characters acting real over the top. But it ended right there before it really became a shell of its former self. I mean, it could and would have gotten to that point if it had gone on any longer, but it didn't.

Most shows are written on a 5 Year Plan now. And if the show goes on longer, the original creators start to leave.
So I'm going to stick firm on 5 Years being the maximum a show should last.
