Christopher Daniels was supposed to be the higher power character but McMahon vetoed because Daniels was too small in his opinion. As bad as the Higher Power payoff was, this would have been hot garbage. Nobody knew who in the blazes he was.

I've also heard that Curt Hennig was supposed to be the guy that was under the "masked man" gimmick that kept attacking Hogan during his first few months in WCW, which was eventually revealed to be Brutus Beefcake. Yep, if you watch the first time the MM appeared, on the August '94 Clash, commentary kept dropping hints like how Flair had just committed "the perfect crime." Dreamer as an American Male was of course referenced in Cactus Jack's anti-hardcore promos in ECW.

As far as the Black Scorpion goes, there really was no original guy. Ole wrote the name on a booking sheet as a joke and Jim Herd insisted that he go with it, even after Ole explained that it was a joke and there was no Black Scorpion.

Not "Gimmick" exactly but the only reason Matt Hardy was revealed as the person who'd been ruining Jeff's life for months was because everyone and their grandma figured out it was Christian. Still would of been better for everyone if it was Christian

Lanny Poffo was originally going to be the new Gorgeous George in WCW but they ended up giving it to Randy's girlfriend (if you believe Lanny, Randy actually bought the gimmick for his brother). There were rumors that Chris Benoit was the original choice for The Ringmaster instead of Steve Austin I think Ringmaster would've fit Benoit better tbh. Silent wrestler who just kicks ass, perfect.

Luke Harper was supposed to be the jobber in the role that eventually became Colin Delaney, but was too tall for it...did that count? The part was written for indie worker John McChesny, who didn't get it because Michael Hayes is an indecisive jackass. Jimmy Olsen was also in the running, IIRC.

I think an unknown would have allowed them to really dig into story and go with something fresh and open up more options than sticking with Vince/Austin. I could see Shane making it work though. As for Daniels in it, I'm 50/50 on that. I haven't seen much of any of his work from that time to judge it fairly. As for the size thing, I don't see that mattering if Daniels could bring it on the mic like he does now. Paul Bearer wasn't exactly an imposing figure physically but his personality and character made up for it. Same for James Mitchell, Jim Cornette and many others. Honestly that might have made it work better since Austin getting his hands on him could have provided some major moments with Austin, Vince, Vince and Austin working together and so on.

Has there ever been a legitimate source for the Daniels / Higher Power story? I've never believed this.
It sounds like somebody just made it up as a What If in about 2004 as Daniels was a "dark" character.

Supposedly, Jim Cornette gave Dusty Rhodes two names to replace Dennis Condrey after he split from the Midnight Express. Dusty went with the first name, Tim Horner, but couldn't get ahold of him, so he called the second name, Stan Lane, who did.

Man, I can't remember ever being gladder that someone couldn't be assed to answer their phone. Tim Horner in the Midnights?

Daniels WAS supposed to be the higher power behind Vampiro in WCW, but the whole angle got scrapped for reasons I can't recall, and I think people may be getting things muddled.

What would Tim Hotner’s Midnight Express name have been? “Tantalizing” Tim?

I believe both Russo and Prichard have confirmed Daniels was supposed to get the role but McMahon vetoed it. Russo it recycled in WCW because wanted have Daniels paying that role.

I have a sneaking suspicion that had they gone through with Daniels as the Higher Power, the whole thing would have been booked much differently as it went along. There wouldn't be any sort of "It was me, Austin" reveal moment. Most likely, they'd probably have introduced him less-bombastically in a vignette or something where UT pledges his alleigance to some robed figure. Probably a few more vignettes of the hooded figure giving demonic sermons with UT and the Ministry standing below his pulpit. Very likely would have been used more as the mic guy than as a force to be reckoned with in the ring by Austin.

I thought the Higher Power was going to be Jake Roberts.
Also wasn't the Undertaker supposed to been in the Egg at Survivor Series 90?
