Crowd seems 50/50 for this Santana Garrett vs. Piper Niven match.

The announcing is kinda bugging me. I know they re-recorded, but even if I didn't know that it sounds like they're watching a replay.
Also I hope Niven gets really far in this.

Thoughts during first episode:
-single elimination tournaments aren't "unique" JR that's how most tournaments work.
-I feel bad for CFO$ having to crank out 32 themes in short order. I wonder if Triple H has them locked in his basement.
-Vanessa Borne is solid for a rookie. Serena looks like she hasn't missed a step. Fun little match.
-Is Vanessa the other Samoan besides Samoa Joe who isn't related to the rest of them.
-Serena's spear > Roman's
-Yesssss bonus Charly *heart eyes*
-hot damn that Shayna finisher is NASTY.
-this Jazzy/Abbey match is awesome. Abbey plays a good scrappy face and Jazzy is a good monster heel.
-holy f*** that lariat Jazzy threw!!
-surprised Abbey won, thought they were gonna push Jazzy hard. I'd like to see Jazzy back.

I think they just use production music in the tournaments, then they give them custom themes once they start getting regular TV time after it's over, like they did with the cruiserweights.

Wowza, that middle rope neckbreaker from Candice LeRae was sick.

If I ever met Lacey Evans I think I'd do whatever I can to make sure she wouldn't get pissed at me.

Good stuff in the first round. I can't wait to see how the tournament progresses.
Also, crushing hard on Piper Niven.

-hot damn that Shayna finisher is NASTY. That vertical suplex into a rear naked choke was rather unique. Why was Renee Michelle dressed like a sexy Santa well before December? A shame that Newell and Io had to miss out on this.

Io actually was doing stuff in Japan again not long ago and Meltzer was putting stuff out that they had decided to not sign her due to her neck stuff, but his info on all of this stuff has been so off the whole time. He did add in that the WWE seems very heavily against signing new talents that have head or neck problems. So Shirai may or may not be coming in.

Does anyone know when the next episodes go up on UK time/dates? Wowza, that middle rope neckbreaker from Candice LeRae was sick. If only any of the rest of that match had any pace to it at all. When they cut to Johnny in the crowd his face seemed to say 'you went over, good work. But that match blew.' I'm probably going to review the whole of round one on my blog, I'll post it here when I'm done.

It's strange because there was concern about Kairi having concussions in the past, but she was still signed anyway.

Trying to catch back up on this, only halfway through episode one, cool to see Serena Deeb back. Glad to see she got her shit together.

He did add in that the WWE seems very heavily against signing new talents that have head or neck problems. So Shirai may or may not be coming in. It's strange because there was concern about Kairi having concussions in the past, but she was still signed anyway. Here it is, it's from the beginning of August. In a big surprise, at the 7/30 Stardom show in Shinkiba, Io Shirai returned. Shirai who many considered the top woman wrestler in Japan, had done her farewell there and was to start here. There was an issue with a neck injury when WWE did their testing of her several months back, which led to her announce she was taking time off for the neck injury and that was the reason she gave for leaving Stardom. WWE hadn’t finalized the deal, and wrestlers are not allowed to say they publicly they are going to WWE until the company announces it first (hence Adam Cole disappearing off the face of the Earth and I have no evidence he’s working these days as an astronaut nor that he was actually poisoned to death as the Young Bucks have implied on “Being the Elite”) so she couldn’t say at the time she was leaving for the U.S. even though most knew it. After a three-way main event, Shirai hit the ring and attacked Oedo Tai and asked Viper (who was in the Mae Young Classic) to join her as a tag team in the Queen’s Quest group. Viper agreed. Shirai announced her return on 8/13 at Korakuen Hall, and that she would also be in the upcoming Five Star Grand Prix tournament (which is their version of G-1, and Jim Cornette should be proud of that name). She also issued a challenge to Team Jungle for the Artist of Stardom championship. This is because she’s not coming to WWE after all. She contacted Rossy Ogawa and Stardom on 7/28 and said that she was ready to return full-time. Nobody has publicly said WWE changed their minds at bringing her in, but obviously that is what happened. The phraseology being used for Japan is that she got some bad news and told Ogawa she was ready to come back. Nobody has directly said that WWE decided against offering her a contract due to her neck issues that they found in her physicals, but they had stalled on offering her a contract months ago when they found out about the injury while she did her medicals in the U.S. After she did her medicals, WWE wanted her to take time off to rehab her neck. She did that and was just cleared by doctors to return to the ring after her therapy. Then WWE seemingly decided against offering her the deal. While every case is different, WWE has had a general rule of not wanting to bring in new talent that either has concussion issues or neck issues. It also could be that with Kairi Hojo and Asuka they already have two Japanese women and had discovered more women from other nationalities that they wanted to sign from the Mae Young Classic. Even though most would say Shirai was better than Hojo or Asuka, timing is everything in this business

![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/6c/WWE_Mae_Young_Classic_official_logo.png) WWE Mae Young Classic Episode #3 August 31st, 2017 | Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida
Looking at the cards, episode #3 was my most anticipated one of the first round. It features three of my favorite girls on the independent scene.
The opening video package gave short introductions for the eight women competing tonight, voiced over by Mauro Ranallo.
Ayesha Raymond vs. Toni Storm I’ve never seen Raymond before. She’s 27 and can apparently deadlift over 450 pounds. Storm has been KILLING it lately and is very popular. She’s just 21 and is the first PROGRESS Women’s Champion. Storm stood out and looked more like a star before even locking up than everyone else so far. Raymond didn’t shake hands, but Storm paid her back with some cockiness of her own. Storm got to bust out the ass attacks, which got a pop. Raymond took over a bit with her power, while Storm rallied behind the “Aussie” chants. The finish was VERY awkward, as Raymond faked out her finish, then missed a splash and got pulled into a lame looking cradle to lose in 4:27. It worked as a decent showcase for Storm. She didn’t show a ton of offense but she oozed charisma. [**½]
Charlotte and Sara Amato were shown in the crowd.
Dakota Kai vs. Kavita Devi Devi is the first Indian woman in the WWE. Kai is my absolute favorite in the tournament, formerly known as Evie. She’s been great in SHIMMER, Shine and STARDOM in recent years. She’s signed to the WWE. Like Raymond in the previous match, Devi held the clear strength advantage. Her doing a slow motion lucha arm drag was not a good look. It looked bad and she should probably stick to power stuff for now. Kai got in some dropkicks that had no effect and then looked to die on a press slam. Kai quickened the pace and delivered a huge running kick, before scoring with a diving double stomp to win in 3:56. The double stomp looked more impactful than Balor’s, to be honest. Kai did her best to sell and bump for Devi, but Devi didn’t know enough to even work a four minute match. She was very repetitive. Still, kudos to Kai for selling during and after the match. Kai meets Rhea Ripley in round two. [**]
The Rock’s family was shown in the crowd. His mother, his daughter and his ex-wife, sitting with Nia Jax.
Bianca Belair vs. Sage Beckett Both are signed to WWE. Beckett is 32 and was trained by the Dudley Boyz, while Belair is 28 and has been working for about a year. Again, we had someone with a clear size and strength advantage. Maybe they should’ve put these matches on separate episodes. Belair fired up but the crowd didn’t seem that into it. Beckett got a pop from me for busting out the old Bubba Bomb. She ended up missing the Vader Bomb and Belair whipped her with her braid. She followed with a spear to win in 5:33. Average outing, though the story of a bigger girl having control and making a mistake that costs her is redundant on this episode. With no familiar faces in this one, the crowd was less invested than the first two matches. [**]
Piper Nevin vs. Santana Garrett It blows my mind that Garrett hasn’t been signed yet. She’s 29, worked with TNA and STARDOM and has won tons of titles. She also has the kind of look that the WWE would typically market. Nevin is signed and formerly known as Viper. She’s 26 and has worked for STARDOM, WCPW and other promotions. The crowd was split for this one. From the start, it was clear that this would be the best “speed vs. size” matchup. Santana used her quickness and athleticism to find ways to negate Piper’s size. Piper powered out of a submission and pulled out a cross body of her own. That led to Piper slowing the pace and wearing down Santana. Santana fought back with a tornado DDT and Eat Defeat (I wouldn’t have her do that, since it’s another girl’s finish). She survived another splash and pulled out the Trish handstand rana for two. The fans came to their feet just before Santana missed her finish. Piper hit a senton and weird looking Michinoku Driver to win in 7:09. Another quality main event. They told a tried and true story very well, but I was kind of burnt out by that tale on this episode. Santana and Piper are both great and it’s a shame one had to go out so early. The dynamic worked and the crowd was way invested. Piper faces Serena Deeb in the next round. [***½]
Overall: 6/10. I wanted to like this episode more. With Toni Storm, Dakota Kai, Santana Garrett and Piper Nevin, it could’ve been great. However, Storm and Kai were paired with women who weren’t anywhere near their level and put in short matches. They both looked good, though. Belair/Beckett was alright. The main event was very good and showed why Nevin and Garrett are so good. I just would’ve put some of these matches on different episodes due to how redundant they were.

Starting episode two now, and I think this Xia Li has something. It's raw and needs seasoning, but I think there's something to her.
