Eh, even aside from the Star Wars aspect, it didn't look all that interesting to begin with. Like, there doesn't look to be anything about Ferdinand that you couldn't get from 6 other non-Pixar animated films.
But yeah, whoever planned for this to be released on the same day as Star Wars was either monumentally unqualified to be a... release planner (what job title is that?), or was given some awfully wrong information about demographics.

When I asked my kids (9&8) do you want to see Ferdinand if Star Wars was completely sold out or too hard to get tickets for the right times, they both looked at me with a combination of confusion and derision and said nothing. Not gonna lie, I fully support their reaction.

I figured it would bomb. Outside of WWE, the studio didn't try to hype Cena being in the film (it's never mentioned in any of the trailers I saw ran in theaters or in the TV spots I saw for it outside of WWE programming). You would think you would do that to get more turn out. Then they decided to debut it the same weekend as the biggest movie of the year in Last Jedi and right after a guaranteed animated hit about Mexican culture in Coco (I'm aware Spain is not the same thing before someone brings that up), which cut into the same market as them. I saw a good amount of commercials for it and they had Cena did some TV spots for Cartoonetwork Well, I have to admit I don't watch Cartoon Network so I suppose I missed those. But everywhere I saw commercials for it, I saw no mention of him.

So the trailer with its oh so hilarious fart jokes didn’t entice people into cinemas. What. A. Shock.

Sony Animated Accountant: Let me get this straight: you took almost your money you earned franchising your name and used it to make a movie to bet against Star Wars?

Outside of the CN promos I saw when they mentioned the movie John Cena wasn't a name I remember them throwing on there to hype up the movie

I'm glad he tried to take on Star Wars. Good going. *The studio or whoever decided to book it the day of star wars. Nothing to do with Cena.

It was Number 2 at the box office, too. Just that Star Wars was number 1 at $220 million. I don't think I've ever seen that big a gap between a number 1 and number 2 movie for weekend totals.

All comments aside I doubt this movie will tank Cena's acting career in any fashion. Kate McKinnon is also in this and she's a way bigger star and nobody is talking about how it's going to hurt her. It's an animated film with dubious timing and little marketing. It received plenty of good reviews and probably would have done much better if it was released on...well any other day except for when Star Wars came out. Yeah, people’ll come out of this smelling like roses. NBC isn’t going to fire McKinnon from SNL for not doing well in a movie, Cena’s still got a couple of projects coming up (they all look bad but still) and the only person losing will be the studio since most of the cast and crew get paid in advance anyway. Remember The Rock’s first animated movie Planet 51? Exactly.

Thats what got me. Is Kate Mckinnon really goddamn expensive? Where the hell did that budget come from? Studio-quality computer animation is actually really expensive, representing years of a lot of peoples' work to make. Behind major action blockbusters, major studio animated movies are the most expensive thing to make in Hollywood, but the idea is that you snatch up the family market so much you make your money back for it just fine.

The preview I saw (before Coco) hyped up Cena's involvement to the point that they had live-action shots of him doing voices and little interview clips. He was definitely the number one thing they were selling about the movie.

It took him over a decade but now John Cena has found some odds he couldn't overcome.

The gap was actually bigger with Force Awakens stomping Alvin and the Chipmunks 4. $248 mil vs $14 mil. Sidenote, Chipmunks is also a Fox release. That means Fox has attempted to take on Star Wars in December twice now, and twice it's gone poorly.

Sony Animated Accountant: Let me get this straight: you took almost your money you earned franchising your name and used it to make a movie to bet against Star Wars? Is this a Fox joint? BlueSky? That studio was all getting laid off by Disney no matter what this did.
