Guess the odds were just too great for John Cena to overcome this time.

Star Wars was playing 7/10 theatres at the local cinema.
This opening was probably expected.

As I said when it was announced... I don't remember there being a lot to the story of Fernidand Also This is currently slated to go up against a little known indy film... {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler} that's probably not a good sign They had to have expected that it would tank going up against Star Wars, so I don't know why the hell they would think this was a good idea.

Yeah this was a baffling decision to open this flick opposite Star Wars. With that said, is anyone else baffled that Cena is getting various movie roles, some of which are starring roles in "A" pictures? If there's any evidence that Cena is a draw in movies I have yet to really see it. I mean he has been fairly amusing in supporting roles and cameos (which AJ Styles noted in a promo a while ago) but after years of seeing the guy shoved down the audience's collective throat in WWE, is anyone begging to see Cena star in movies?

I’ll save Blue Sky Animation the embarrassment and pick up that measly $13 million.

I'd guess that wrestling hardcores don't make up a majority of the viewing audience out there.

I think it’s literally as simple as the dude has a good look, can be goofy and serious somewhat and any opportunity to try and have the next Rock get successful they want to at least try. Anything else might be slightly overthinking it, to be honest.

Well if we're being honest The Rock kinda failed a lot in Hollywood until Fast Five. Before becoming Luke Hobbs, The Rock's films were forgettable action movies and some Disney fiascos.
That being said The Rock never had such a bad failure like Ferdinand, I don't think even the tooth fairy was such an embarrassment.
I was rooting for John to actually become a household name that wouldn't need the wwe anymore. He actually had prove himself as an actor and start again so everyone could forget those hideous wwe movies, but the fact that the first time you starred in a movie from a real movie studio turns into such a failure might be impossible to overcome.

The studio was dumb enough to open against Star Wars. There was no way that was going differently.

Planet 51 with The Rock grossed $12m opening weekend ($1m less than Fernando) on the same weekend as a Twilight movie and he’s not exactly hurting from that right now.

I don't think it is a horrible idea to try against Star Wars. Yeah, Star Wars is going to dominate but not everyone likes or can get into Star Wars. As long as you're not expecting a huge number it could be one where a movie could have a decent number.

As far as "How could they set this up to fail?", it's not like they can just leave huge, gaping holes in release schedules to offer up nothing against the surefire hits coming out all year, especially since between Pixar, Disney's in-house animation studio, Marvel, and now Star Wars they have so many major successes that just can't be stopped. Something has to go into that spot whether it's smart to or not; usually, that's where studios will put projects they don't have a lot of faith in, or which have some kind of niche appeal that they hope they can reach regardless away from the main demographic of whatever's dropping. Doesn't always work, but there's not much they can do about it; bear in mind that Coco came out only a few weeks ago and that would have been even more direct competition. Either someone in the studio decided to sacrifice it, or the hope is that regardless of opening week figures, they can get a solid locking down of the Christmas season family moviegoing audience, particularly where those with younger children are concerned.
I can guarantee you that the director was not happy with the news, and that the people who made the decision to put it there didn't do so thinking they had a real contender on their hands.

As long as you're not expecting a huge number it could be one where a movie could have a decent number. And it only did $2m less than their own estimates ($15m was what they were expecting) so it didn’t hurt THAT much to try.

Of course it made way less than Star Wars. Any movie would. Other than the lowest opening record stat that's not really newsworthy. We'll see how it does next weekend. In the end, I'm sure it'll do fine. I'll tell you this: besides Star Wars and Ferdinand, I don't even know what movies are out in theaters right now.
