When Cena returns he should feud with Kylo Reilly.

They knew it wasn't tracking well. Star wars is an excuse. Not every kid 3d toon is a winner. The Rock didn't set the world on fire in Planet 51 either.

I just don't get why they wouldn't have opened it unopposed last week?

Going up against a Star Wars film and expecting a great box office is like betting on a baby to win a slam dunk contest. You're throwing money away when you really didn't need to. Two years ago, they did the exact same thing, pitting an Alvin & the Chipmunks movie against The Force Awakens. And in 2019, another studio will do the same thing.

I just don't get why they wouldn't have opened it unopposed last week? Because there isn't the excuse of opening against Star Wars for low numbers

They knew it wasn't tracking well. Star wars is an excuse. Not every kid 3d toon is a winner. The Rock didn't set the world on fire in Planet 51 either. Most CGI films are flops. The majority that aren't Disney/Pixar struggle to break even, due to how large their budgets are, and "budget" movies tend to insult your intelligence with intentionally sassy characters, tired Matrix references, and the occasional bathroom joke (see The Star for a recent example). Really, even if they opened last weekend, they'd get $20+ million at best, and then would be burned by The Last Jedi. The only way I could see this breaking even was if it was released in January, but that's the Land of the Turkeys, so seeing it paired up with a Seltzerberg movie & a gore porn slasher would indicate a lack of trust in the project. It was a lose/lose situation.

It was Number 2 at the box office, too. Just that Star Wars was number 1 at $220 million. I don't think I've ever seen that big a gap between a number 1 and number 2 movie for weekend totals. The gap was actually bigger with Force Awakens stomping Alvin and the Chipmunks 4. $248 mil vs $14 mil. Sidenote, Chipmunks is also a Fox release. That means Fox has attempted to take on Star Wars in December twice now, and twice it's gone poorly. And it won't happen a third time now

I've read that they were only expecting to pull in about 12-15 million on the opening weekend anyways, so right around their own projections.

How could you make a movie like that for $111 million, that's 30 million more than any of the Despicable Me movies.
Make movies for less!

"But I thought the Generals were due!!!"
Seriously who thought opening it this weekend was a good idea? I mean with all the money they invested you figure the studio must've thought it was a turd.

Sony Animated Accountant: Let me get this straight: you took almost your money you earned franchising your name and used it to make a movie to bet against Star Wars? LOL @ The idea of Sony being due.
