Over time I've been more and more hesitant to label someone mentally ill because they do something outlandish or horrible. Some people are just assholes. It's unfair to people with actual mental illness who don't go out of their way to tweet racist bullshit. Roseanne made her bed, she was already making it before they revived the show, now she has to lie in it. It's unfortunate that a lot of folks lost their jobs, but this seemed like it was gonna happen eventually.

ABC knew what they were getting into with her. This is the tale of The Frog And The Scorpion. They knew they would get stung eventually. In hindsight they probably never should have agreed to work with her again in the first place. This is the key thing here. It isn't like she only said this thing, it was a recurring thing from after Rosanne ended. She genuinely believes in what she said and it was all out there for people to see, age of social media or not. Even if ABC didn't know all that stuff, they can't be surprised from the reaction people had to it in the first place. No, I don't have that much sympathy for her, to be frank. As someone with Autism, something that's used as an excuse for assholes to say assholic things, the mental health stuff does not fly with me at all. If I said something dumb, I should be called out the same way someone without Autism is.

It's incredibly dangerous to conflate mental health issues with racism/hateful attitudes.

It's incredibly dangerous to conflate mental health issues with racism/hateful attitudes. Exactly - the two things are not even remotely related. Being mentally ill doesn't cause you to be racist, and being racist doesn't cause you to be mentally ill.

This is interesting www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2018/05/31/jimmy-kimmel-the-roseanne-i-know-could-probably-use-some-compassion/?utm_term=.4f1da5583178I've followed Roseanne since she first appeared on The Tonight Show and her erratic behavior came to public light I guess by the second season or so when she fired several writers and brought in those that were close to her and changed the complexion of the show. I don't doubt there's more here than meets the eye-am I using this as an excuse to defend her? No. But for every asshole or whatever in this world, there's an underlying issue or issues. For that matter, in this society and age of being "woken" there are those that have zero tolerance for someone that f***s up and they take things at face value and that's not being very "woken" in my book. I have to agree. Don't get me wrong, what she said was awful and cancelling her show was 100% the right move. Roseanne is a VERY flawed person with some pretty lousy traits/beliefs, but I agree with the notion that you can't champion compassion and being "better" while kicking someone while they're down and then attacking and namecalling anyone who tries to have a discussion about it Yeah, the whole "You're either with us or against us (and if you disagree with ANYTHING our side says, no matter how silly/BS-ish, we'll get the torches out and destroy you)" thing that's been steadily growing on BOTH sides of the fence has gotten ridiculous, as it's building to a major conflict that neither side is going to win, despite their thinking otherwise. That all being said, while Roseanne is clearly mentally ill, there was no reason for her to say what she said, other than being horribly racist. I feel bad that her mental illness has driven her into tin foil hat racist territory (and this is coming from someone who has NEVER been a fan), but what the hell did she think was going to come from her saying that? ABC did make the right call there, but at the same time, I can somewhat agree with what Jimmy Kimmel is saying here. Hell, I was one of the few people sympathetic to Kanye West after he said what he said, as there's something clearly wrong with him, but Kanye just said something incredibly stupid. That's a HUGE difference from saying a black person resembles an ape. That's just messed up on Roseanne's part, and no mental illness can explain all of that away.

But is her racism related to her mental health or is it something that's just a part of her being?
Good point. I mean obviously she was influenced to make her feel that way, not saying by drugs, but she wasn't born with it.

So the other obvious question: how many years before people go on the Hogan "we forgive her/want to see her again" train?

Good point. I mean obviously she was influenced to make her feel that way, not saying by drugs, but she wasn't born with it. If you ever look at the section of twitter that gets involved with the beliefs of things we don’t discuss here both sides of that coin tend to have many people saying very ugly things. Many times very racist things. Those people can escalate their exchanges to very unpleasant places. It’s a big part of why I personally am turned off to that subject. It’s obvious to me that she doesn’t care what people think and that she’s very caught up in that world. How much mental illness has to do with her participation in all that is beyond me. Everyone is different and I can’t imagine all that’s going on her in head. That said, ABC knew she had a history of racist remarks and mental illness. Both have been out there for years. Anyone could research that. I understand ABC was concerned but if they were smart they should’ve found a way to force her off twitter. Have someone else or a bot run her account. Many celebrities have their twitter set up like that. Too late now. I don’t see her agreeing to being shipped off to sensitivity training or agreeing to seek any kind of help at her age. She’s done.

So the other obvious question: how many years before people go on the Hogan "we forgive her/want to see her again" train? I think it will be a long while, before she gets that treatment (if so, even). I have to take different medicines for seizures, and a thyroid pill on top of that. We can agree to disagree on political and religious beliefs, etc, but I have never thought of insulting someone. I don't see people of different color/heritage, that way. I just see them as people.

So the other obvious question: how many years before people go on the Hogan "we forgive her/want to see her again" train? While I doubt she will never have another prime time sitcom, I would bet my last dollar Roseanne will be back in syndication/streaming within 3 years. Sorry to burst the bubble of those DVD and blu ray investors.

The Cosby Show is still in syndication, and Bill Cosby is a convicted rapist. Roseanne will be back in syndication once the current heat's off Barr.

If they really want to be meta, have Valerie Harper play their nanny or female relative/mother surrogate.

I don't know what hilarious appropriate way to kill her off? Well she died because she didn't have health insurance because of Trump getting rid of Obama care.

As an aside-my brother had a friend-they weren’t very close, they only saw each other on occasion. Anyway, his friend was a big Jimi Hendrix fan, and had a tatto of him. He got in a wreck, slipped into a coma, woke up and was furious all of a sudden that he had a tattoo of a black guy.
I’m not justifying anything, but the mind works in some crazy ways
