Garauntee that at least one animator mentioned how bad the design was to someone but the director/producers figured that it didn't matter. Apparently SEGA themselves didn't like it either so it's like, how do you not go back to the drawing board immediately? Lack of creative control. That's pretty much it. They were just there to give an opinion and for the executives to go "Well, glad we did that, now let's ignore it". It's why at this moment, Shigeru Miyamoto is breathing down the neck of pretty much every animator at Illumination doing that Mario movie.

I’m going to be honest, I didn’t hate the so-called “gremlin Sonic”.
In fact, I read some of the especially nasty things people were directing towards the filmmakers, and I felt bad for them for the most part.
I’m glad people are liking this apparent update, but some of that vitriol was unnecessary IMO.

And I'm not even saying you should send nasty comments to those people but these are always, always, mandated and pressured by executives and studio heads. The animators basically working to crunch trying to make a design that they don't agree with or can't do much to change without throwing the whole project out of sync are pretty much never to blame. But obviously those people have to be the ones to come out and make the statements because who wants to see a poor richer than anyone else executive take any kind of stick for decisions?

I don’t agree with some of the crap angry fans said about the execs, either. Even if I did hate the first model as much as everyone else, I still wouldn’t have gone that far.

Agreed but I’m seeing way more anger towards people on the lower end than the higher end. The fact nobody in that position has taken any kind of responsibility says a lot.

Apparently SEGA themselves didn't like it either so it's like, how do you not go back to the drawing board immediately? Paramount and all those working on it see it as nothing more than an easy paycheck. They would've just had a guy wearing a blue hoodie if they could get away with it
Look at the details of Detective Pikachu in contrast.

Hope that redesign is legit as it looks sooo much better and alot closer to what he should have looked like from the start.

Again, and this seems to be needed to be said countless times; Creative Control. The Pokemon Company got themselves creative control over the project and helped as much as possible. SEGA, however, just let Paramount go ahead with whatever because that didn't happen. It's more on them that this first design happened at all then it is to do with any movie studio.

A part of me hopes that's not legit and what we get will be somehow worse than what we originally had.

That's a much better design, however this movie is still going to be shit.

If I was Sega I would have tried to get Pixar to make the movie and set it in the same world as Sonic SatAM or something close to it. Oh well....

The problem with a SatAM movie is that Ken Penders would find a way to get involved and SEGA don't want to deal with that mess again.

While the design is better I still think the movie looks awful

That's much better. Which means anyone responsible for the original demonic creation should be mocked for the rest of their career. It should haunt them until the day they retire.

At the very least, the insane amount of porn made from this new design will just be weird whereas the porn from the original design will be the stuff of horrors.
And it's Sonic; that's definitely happening.

I think, if there's one person who can make this movie somewhat entertaining, it's Jim Carrey, hopefully he hams it up enough so that people forget how horrifying this version of Sonic looks.
Also, in the trailer, wasn't that US soldier played by the same guy who played Damien Dahrk in Season 4 of Arrow?
