Last Jedi having a huge backlash isn't an accurate narrative though. There's no objective metric one can point to to prove that. One can't say people stayed away from Solo cuz of Last Jedi any more than people can definitely prove it was always gonna be a niche movie released at a terrible time surrounded by stronger movies. The latter makes more sense though. The massive drop off in blu ray sales compared to The Force Awakens is one objective measure you can interpret as showing a lessened enthusiasm for TLJ. It is incomplete without considering other factors though like trends in blu ray sales generally, increasing digital sales etc. TLJ also had the largest second weekend drop off of any in the series at -67.5%. www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/drops.htm?page=2&order=ASC&p=.htm

Last Jedi was lucky to have the Star Wars brand name on it to support it. If this was another trilogy fans would’ve given up on the franchise altogether. People watched hoping it would be good and hoping they’d like it more if they watched it again. There's no denying it made a lot of money. It had the Star Wars brand name on it. It would’ve made a lot more money if it was a much better movie. By and large most Star Wars fans didn’t like it. Not a certain segment of the fanbase. Disney cancelled other planned movies because fans stopped caring about the franchise. That was because of the ton of backlash caused by Last Jedi. Solo didn’t cause that. Many Star Wars fans that saw Solo thought it was decent. The disinterest was caused by Last Jedi. Like it or not that is the narrative. No amount of Star Wars apologists are going to change that. Literally every single person I’ve talked to in a face to face conversation loved that movie. If I never went online, I would’ve never known it was hated. Most of my family are Star Wars nerds. We did a white elephant gift exchange one year and every single gift was Star Wars related. The majority of us disliked or outright hated it. One of us hated Force Awakens so badly he never even bothered to see TLJ. But it is also true that the rest of us other than the one cousin will probably see every Star Wars movie that comes out until the end of time regardless of the quality of the previous film, so those opinions only matters so much.

Huh. There's a callback I didn't expect. Continues the use of small previously unimportant items like Han's dice.

It was totally the fan tears that caused the cancellation of the spin-offs, not the fact that Solo failed to break even... The lessened enthusiasm after TLJ among the hardcore fanbase surely is one factor leading to Solo underperforming. Can't say how much to weigh that against the core problem of having someone else play Han solo, the proximity in release to TLJ, and middling word of mouth. Solo had terrible word of mouth and talk of on set issues BEFORE TLJ came out. Not to mention... Solo was a story not a terrible amount of people really wanted to see.

And we've seen big drop-offs in the sequels to the original Star Wars and the sequels to Phantom Menace, though Episode III did do better than Episode II, if I remember right.
And TLJ had no real effect on my own disinterest in Solo. Really the only things that interested me in Solo were Donald Glover as Lando and seeing Corellia for the first time in canon. Those didn't outweigh how "eh" I felt about the film otherwise. Thinking TLJ was the best movie ever made or the drizzling shits wouldn't have made much of any difference on how I felt about Solo.

Empire Strikes Back dropped off compared to A New Hope by about 30%. Return of the Jedi took less than Empire. Attack of the Clones dropped off compared to Phantom Menace by about 30%. Revenge of the Sith took more than Clones. Last Jedi dropped off compared to Force Awakens by about 30%. It's a trend, Star Wars trilogies always start strong, then take a dip for the sequel. It's 50/50 whether this follows in the footsteps of Jedi or Sith compared to its predecessor.

TLJ was a success in terms of business, but creatively it was a mess.

Are Finn and Poe finally going to get it on? At this point, it's really all I care about when it comes to Star Wars.

Don't think I've seen it mentioned yet, but is it possible that the Skywalker mentioned is Ben Solo?
