I think Rich from RLM said it best, in regards to the Nu Star Trek that CBS All Access has been giving us: we loved DS9, but we didn't want DS9 to become the norm.
Discovery and Picard are absolutely running with the DS9 vibe 100%.

Discovery and Picard are absolutely running with the DS9 vibe 100%. They aren't. They are something entirely different. DS9 had a reputation as being "dark" but it was simply the case that it was the first Trek show to feature many characters who weren't Starfleet and didn't conform to the wholesome image. Even with a deconstruction of Federation principals, DS9 still had an idealism and a clear direction which these modern Trek writers don't have. I doubt Abrams, Kurtzman, Goldsman etc...could even grasp DS9's meaning, let alone replicate it.

As noted DS9 certainly tested the Federation and humanity's ideals, while still grounding the characters with moral centers. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}Characters like Garak & Quark certainly comment on the flawed nature of Starfleet, yet themselves are gradually changed by their relationships with the various officers.
In the Pale Moonlight is effective precisely because Sisko is a good man deeply pained by having to do immoral things to save billions of lives.
DS9 introduces Section 31 while having the characters condemn its existence and help bring an end to the war because they go against the group's plans. Its the difference between Batman as written by a Chuck Dixon vs one written by a latter era Frank Miller. Both are dark, but one is a lot uglier.

I'm kinda sad that when Wil asked John if he had trouble getting back into playing Q after so long, that John didn't reply something like "Well, I did play a cartoon dragon/horse version of Q for several years so it wasn't that hard."

I'm looking forward to Picard finally admitting his love for Q after all these years.

Bah, give Jonathan Frakes powers again Nah, the last time he had Q powers, he turned Wesley Crusher into an adult male model, but still left him with Wesley's teenage boy voice.

I love Q but that isn't enough to make me excited for another season of this

I mean, at least the Q character no longer goes out on the way Voyager seemed determined to make the entire species as underwhelming and lame as possible.

Probably not what we're hoping, based on the hashtag, but we can dream.

Picard's perfect ending was the poker game in All Good Things. The character needed nothing more than that. It was poignant and heartfelt.

Smart move with the back-to-back thing, since no offense to the man, but Stewart isn't getting any younger. Who knows how much longer he'll last.
