Rick and Morty started gaining a vocal minority fanbase of the kind of shit heads who call everything they don't like "autistic" because they can't get away with calling it "retarded" anymore.
So they put in a gag that basically flat out stated Rick is autistic.
Oh yeah, and then there's Pickle Rick starting off with something ridiculous and memeable and everyone else pretty much flat out ignoring the stupid antics and eye rolling them.

"Dexter" by season 6 showed nothing that ever happened was of any consequence and the fans were wrong for watching in the first place. I just gotta say, I looked forward to your episode reviews of the later seasons more that I looked forward to watching the show.

Last Jedi really felt like it at times. In terms of comics, wasn't Superboy Prime turned into something to make fun of fans? You mean the origin of Superboy Prime or when he went Villain ? When he became a basement dwelling internet critic without powers.

IDW's transformers comics. Early in their run, sales were slipping due to the global economy tanking and a $1 price hike, so the kicked off the author and swept away all his world building for All Hail Megatron, which was effectively a version of the G1 cartoon with horrible pacing, unlikeable characters and lots of human death. They denied it was a reboot, despite nothing lining up, plot, designs, characters or tone, ignored all complaints and acted like it was all a loving continuation of what came before. About halfway through they had a massive continuity dump, trying to tie the two things together, but did so by murdering a well liked human character offpanel and making him a macguffin, then once they'd seen the negative react on, retconned previous stories to make him a villain, like one huge middle finger to the existing fans. As that series ended, they hired a new editor, Andy Schmidt to fix the continuity, he almost immediately won over fans by saying he hates the idea of continuity, that it was one of the worst things to happen to comics, and he made things even more disjointed by telling artists to disregard even design continuity and to draw things however they like. So characters stopped looking the same from issue to issue, with artists even having to redraw things where they've used someone else's designs... It was all one huge clusterbeep until they hired John Barber to edit the books and get things on an even keel. He worked with the fans, listened to complaints and rather than giving them the finger, he did his best to make things work.

"...And that kids is how I met your mother" I don't know if that was to spite the fanbase but rather blind stubborness to stick to something they decided on several years previously even though it didn't fit anymore.

Last Jedi really felt like it at times. In terms of comics, wasn't Superboy Prime turned into something to make fun of fans? he was. unfortunately, his "you're ruining everything! things were better when on my earth!" antics and habit of wallowing in excessive violent grimdark made him come off more as a parody of DC's writing staff than anyone else. he might as well have been drawn to look like Alex Ross.

Bennett the Sage constantly bringing up Violence Jack and alluding to it and joking about it and basically doing everything possible to bait fans into wanting to see a review of it, then putting up a "review" that's nothing but him talking about why he won't review it.
Like if you didn't want to do it, just don't bring it up in the first place instead of dragging it out for ages then paying it off in a clickbait lie.

About 20 years ago, Game Show Network had a streak of this. alt.tv.game-shows, back when it was a legit discussion forum, did not like GSNs revival of the Gong Show, Extreme Gong (yep, nineties...),to put it lightly. The producers struck back with direct disparaging remarks on the show. To be fair, Chuck Barris used to do the same thing.

"...And that kids is how I met your mother" I don't know if that was to spite the fanbase but rather blind stubborness to stick to something they decided on several years previously even though it didn't fit anymore. I dunno, I mean the fans really loved Robin and Barney together, and the last like, 3 seasons is devoted to them. Maybe it wasn't *intentional*, but to undo all of that journey in about the last 15-20 minutes of the series just seems like a huge middle finger

The producers struck back with direct disparaging remarks on the show. To be fair, Chuck Barris used to do the same thing. Wonder if he was ever as direct as calling them "losers" and implying they'll never have a girlfriend. Now, would Comedy Central vs. MSTies count? Probably would be more of a Take That than a spite...I was thinking of Penn Gillette's voiceovers for MST3K commercials, referencing "listening to our whining" re: moving MST back to midnights. I'd not stop at George Lucas and the OT issues, I'd say George Lucas in general. Jar Jar, though toned down, stays in the prequels and plays an important part in getting the Empire going. (that and adding Gungans in the ROTJ celebration on DVD...) Don't like Vader's Big No? Here it is again in Jedi! (though it wasn't so bad IMO...just you know, took away subtlety) More wacky slapstick CGI background characters! You know, I'll take mediocre Disney movies if we never have to see his ideas again. Would Frank Miller turning "the goddamn Batman" into an ongoing thing for the duration of ASB&R count?

Batman after Knightfall and having Azrael become Batman. The editor constantly mocked the fans’ letters who hated the new direction.

This far without mentioning One More Day? That vile thing? One can argue that it wasn't spiting the fans as much as it was a very disastrous attempt at avoiding continuity lock to pull in the movie audience. Them doubling down on it afterward? Yeah, that was spiteful.

Stephanie Meyer basically sabotaged Jacob Black after the second book when he became a little too popular. He suddenly becomes an asshole in book three. Then rounding off his story arc by having him "imprint" on an infant. All because some of her audience said "Hey, that other one isn't a 100+ year old, emotionally distant stalker. He seems like a pleasant alternative."
