It only beat the Jennifer Lawrence sex romp (which did a bit better than expected) by like $200,000. This is truly a bomb for the ages. By the time Saturday and Sunday finals come in it might not've even actually beaten it. Which would mean that, in what should've been a low competition second weekend, Flash would be coming in fourth to Across the Spider-Verse in it's fourth weekend, an otherwise underperforming Elemental, and No Hard Feelings which should've been at a disadvantage due to it's R rating. Yeah, they might as well call it a wrap now. That movie is dead in the water.

This was too long. It wasn’t terrible. By Snyderverse standards it was probably even good. By my time standards it wasn’t.

It's just incredible how closely this movie aligns to a lot of WBD's problems in general. Overhyped, yet underperforming. It relies on nostalgia, but at the same time doesn't respect the franchises it has. It spent years in production but feels like a cobbled together mess that has to conform to what the new direction of the DCU is.

Wasn’t Keaton in Batgirl? Which was set to be released after this?
What a headache.

Something that really puts things into perspective is that Flash opened to a bigger opening weekend than the first Shazam and now to this point has made less at this point in time than it had, and by a broader margin than it beat Shazam in the first place.

Keaton was the co-lead in Batgirl, and was set to be the primary Batman for the DCEU before Gunn took over, playing a sort of mentor/Nick Fury role to the various heroes. {Spoiler}With Clooney now being the Batman in The Flash's continuity and Gunn confirming there will be a new Batman, it's very much apparent that the end of Flash/Aquaman 2 will not be moving forward.
Aquaman 2 is going to absolutely crater.

Aquaman 2 is going to absolutely crater. Aquaman 2 has always going to have a very difficult road to be anywhere near as successful as the first one, and even breaking even is going to be extremely difficult. It's probably going to need to make bare minimum $500 million to break even, likely more, and while the first one did that, $300 million of that was in China which is nowhere near as western-friendly in regards to movies as it was then and WB doesn't see as much of a profit from, the landscapes for DC and movies in general are far rougher now than they were then, Amber Heard's presence is likely going to poison the movie, the first movie was very slow-going at the box office in getting as high as it was and unless you're James Cameron longevity with movies has become way less of a thing since then, and Ghostbusters being out the same day will probably put a decent dent in its box office.

It's also reportedly been testing abysmally, resulting in several rounds of reshoots to restructure it, only for the subsequent cuts to test progressively worse. Then again, The Flash apparently tested really well, and look how that's worked out.

And ever test screening of Aquaman 2 has resulted in people saying the same thing "The movie is terrible." WB's gotta hope that Blue Beetle is fun, and becomes a hit like Guardians of the Galaxy was. The Guardians were at best C-level heroes, but thanks to a fun emotional first movie they became A-list heroes, and have remained A-list for a decade.

Considering Flash apparently tested better then any WBD superhero movie since The Dark Knight, I actually think Aquaman 2 testing "abysmally" might genuinely mean it's amazing.

Aquaman 2 is going to absolutely crater.

Well, they will at least get my money at the theater for it as opposed to The Flash.

WB's gotta hope that Blue Beetle is fun, and becomes a hit like Guardians of the Galaxy was. I'm gonna see it because I like the actor playing him but the Blue Beetle trailer gave me Shazam vibes. I thought the first Shazam was just okay at best. Didn't hate it, didn't love it. Still haven't seen the second one.

I saw the movie with my girlfriend over the weekend. We thought it was absolutely fine. By no means the worst superhero movie, not even close to the worst DC movie. All told we thought it was decent enough and had a good time.
When it comes to the effects work, for the most part the clips that I saw online where they looked absolutely horrendous, look grand on the big screen.

The overhype calling it the best superhero movie ever made felt so inauthentic and manufactured that I wouldn't be surprised if it created backlash against it. I'm not saying it was the primary reason why no one saw this movie, though; just one of many. Though it did remind me a bit of what happened with Ant-Man 3. After the premieres you had a lot of influencer types hype up how good the movie was and then the critical consensus and general audience consensus did not agree with that at all.

Good news for WB: It beat out No Hard Feelings by $300k.
Bad news for WB: Only Morbius has a bigger second weekend drop.

So I went and saw this movie today. I was the only person in the theater for it. Like others in this thread, I thought the movie was pretty fun but nowhere near greatest super-hero movie ever status. Supergirl was rad, Keaton Batman was rad. *shrug*

Impressively, when the DCEU finally ends it can potentially finish as a net loss.
The movies that made a profit (Man of Steel, BVS, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam!) total $893.8 million.
The movies that have lost money (Justice League, Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, The Suicide Squad, Zack Snyder's Justice League, Batgirl, Black Adam, Shazam: Fury of the Gods) total $720 million.
The Flash looks set to lose anywhere between $150 million and $200 million, and a $100 million or more loss on Aquaman 2 would see a billion in total losses.
