Saw it today. Loved it. Fighting myself on buying shitloads of Pokémon merchandise. As a long time Psyduck and Mr Mime stan, I was thrilled to see them have such hilarious and memorable parts. But who ever would have thought Ditto would be the most terrifying Pokémon in the whole Pokémon world? God damn it was freaky.

Going in knowing next to nothing about Pokémon, with my son whose knowledge is about equal to mine, we both really enjoyed the movie. I liked that it was easy to follow but not like over-the-top explanatory.

Saw it today. Legit loved it so much. I haven't really followed Pokemon since I was a kid, but still feel like I could tell what's going on and who the characters are. Awesome time.

so how long until the "Home Alone and Detective Pikachu are set in the same universe!" fan theories start Yes that small cameo and the other small cameo of the actor whom played Kamen Rider Drive (He was the trainer in the Ryme City tourism video) were my two biggest personal mark out moments from the film. It was a pretty fun film all in all and one of the very few times I actually correctly figured out what the main twists were going to be even before seeing it, but at the same time there were a few things that I didn't expect so points there. Not super ground breaking, but still one of the best video game adaptations to have graced the theaters in quite some time. And now that I think about it I too would love to see an "Old Man" Ash movie, I'd have it basically be the Pokemon version of Rocky Balboa. If any WB executives happen to be reading this give me a call.

If they make an NCU and add Metroid, they should have Ridley and Mother Brain's relationship be like Shredder and Krang

Saw it last night, it was certainly fun, but I do feel like they could've done a little bit more with it, maybe pace the dialog and what have you just a bit better. Solid performances, though, and some fun, quirky ideas that were cool to see play out on screen.
Also, as a proof of concept that the Pokemon universe can translate to the big screen? Huge success on that front.

Huge success on that front. The more I think about it, that’s my general view on the film overall. Plot’s a bit shaky, the twist is alright albeit obvious in hindsight and some of the extras aren’t developed enough but if the idea of the film is to show you can do a in universe Pokémon movie without having to replicate a modern city or force Pokémon into our world? It smashed that WAY out of the park.

This is a fun movie, especially if you're a huge Pokemon nerd like myself. My only complaint is in the spoiler tag. {Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW} Did they forget that Greninja was a Dark type? The stuff that Psyduck and Mewtwo were doing to them shouldn't have worked due to type immunity.

The experiments were supposed to make Pokemkn more powerful, so giving them their literal hidden abilities is a logical outcome.

Saw it last weekend and liked it a ton. It’s a standard detective story, but overall a fun kids’ movie with enough classic Pokemon references and sly humor to keep the parents entertained. {Spoiler}The scene where Tim was running from the angry Aipoms with Pikachu cheering him on had me in tears laughing.

Team Rocket need to be the main antagonists for the Movie Sequel, hell might as well divide that sequel into 2 movies.

Might shock some people but a sequel to Detective Pikachu is reportedly in the works and should come out before any other live action Pokémon movie.

i'm not adverse to another live action movie, but how do you do another Detective Pikachu following that ending? no matter which way you do it, it will come off cheap or pointless {Spoiler}if you turn Ryan Reynold's character back into a Pikachu, he loses most of his fun because everyone knows he's really a human in a Pikachu's body
if you get someone else to voice a talking Pikachu, the entire time everyone will be thinking its a another human in a Pikachu's body. if that turns out to be true, there's no mystery as to why this particular Pikachu can talk. if it turns out not to be true, they've rewritten the rules about Pokemon and opened the doors for all of them to speak since, with a very tiny handful of exceptions (most notably Meowth who taught himself to speak in order to impress a girl), all talking Pokemon speak telepathically.
if they decide to have a normal non-talking Pikachu as the main character, its lost all its fun since it acts like a normal pokemon
the only other option is for Pikachu to disappear and Ryan Reynolds and Justice Smith have to team up to find it, which loses the film's special appeal since instead of a wisecracking Pikachu its a wisecracking Ryan Reynolds, and there are plenty of other films to see that

If I were them, I’d have a movie with new leads and you could have Justice Smith and Ryan’s Reynolds still involved somehow as side characters to flesh out the universe rather it be about them.
