I just purchased my tickets for this. I am as excited for this as most people were for Endgame.

Went to a critic's screening yesterday and enjoyed it.
I will say this though, I'd hesitate to take a kid under 11 or so to see it as there's some real dark themes I wasn't expecting.
Press embargo is still up so I'll go more into later, but if anyone here was making plans with little ones I wanted to give the heads up.

I don't really know how Japanese movie-going practices tend to go so maybe things just gradually heat up, but it seems like the movie isn't off to a good start there - came in number three for the weekend behind Detective Conan (which is in its fourth week of release) and Endgame, making the equivalent of about $8 million.

It is worth noting that audiences there aren't often keen on American adaptations of Japanese material, and response to Detective Pikachu has been noticeably muted in comparison to the States for some time now, so this isn't really a big surprise.

Expected to do well at the box office, projected 55-70 million from the US and about 40-60 million from China

Yeah. The movie isn’t getting much of a push here in Japan. I mean, there’s some, but not what you’d probably expect from a live-action Pokemon movie. And a lot of kids aren’t super keen on foreign films.

Seeing it in four hours, I'm pretty pumped.

So I just got back from an early afternoon showing. It wasn't quite as good as I hoped for but it was still really fun. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}I'm surprised with the big reveal at the end about Detective Pikachu being Tim's Dad. I mean, it was obvious from the beginning of the movie and they forecasted it throughout, but to both reveal and resolve it now doesn't really leave much room for a sequel. Oh well, if it's one and done then I'm fine with that. We need more movies like that.
Also it turns out that this movie is a shadow sequel to Pokemon: The First Movie. They blatantly say that Mewtwo escaped from a lab in the Kanto region twenty years ago. I'm impressed. This also means that somewhere in this movies universe a 30-something year old Ash is running around. I want to see that.
If anybody is wondering, there's no post-credit scene.

Just got out of seeing it. Really enjoyed it but can see why reviews are a bit middle of the road, not really interested in non-fans and the third act kind of drags.
Love the end credits, really great touch with those. More to say when I get home.

I still want to see it, though.

One thing that does kind of bug me, though I guess I get why for accessibility, is... {Spoiler}Non-Gen 1 Pokemon have basically no impact on the plot. Aipom, Greninja, and Torterra are really the only ones that actually do anything and the former two both could've been replaced with anything without really changing the end result at all. Still, can understand the reasoning for it, even if on the whole this still feels VERY much made for longterm fans over newcomers. That said in regards to the end credits... {Spoiler}I loved seeing the cast in Sugimori art form. Excellent touch that really made the whole thing feel like it belongs in with the rest of the franchise. Another touch I super appreciated is them (ending spoilers here)... {Spoiler}Breaking out of the usual rule with... pretty much everything non-USUM in the franchise and having an actual evil Pokemon. And with Ditto no less, which certainly wouldn't have been my first instinct. While I knew the old guy was evil, because obviously, I didn't really see Ditto's part in things coming, initially just thought that was a clever background detail. Well done there.

{Spoiler}Kinda interesting that they pretty much treat this as a self-contained story without many sequel baiting hooks.

Thanks for the heads up. My 8 year old really wants to see it.

My 8 year old really wants to see it. Honestly I wouldn't really agree with that assessment for what it's worth? It's a little weighter than you'd think, some dark moments and mature jokes, but I'd say it's really not bad for kids at all.

It's not been particularly hyped out here regardless, but to be fair, Detective Conan is an absolute juggernaut and so is Endgame. Conan has been trouncing even Endgame at the box office. I would have been shocked if Detective Pikachu was any higher than 3 even if people were really looking forward to it.
