In a make believe business were people have to work together and cooperate to put together a great show, sometimes there are individuals who like to take and take instead of giving back and helping out. That’s why I made this thread so we could determine who’s the biggest primadona and egomaniac in all of wrestling’s history.
The criteria to find the most selfish wrestler is based on if they like to lose, if they like returning the favor after they beat someone, how long they kept themselves on the spotlight at the expense of the talent and the company, if they ever double crossed someone, and the propaganda and lies they use to make themselves look bigger than what they actually are.
I nominate Antonio Inoki.
I barely saw him lose, and after said weird jobs, Inoki would return stronger, beat the guy and the opponent would never be heard from again.
Historían Fumi Saito said that the wrestlers loved Giant Baba because Baba would return the favor and actually put people over, Baba would also loan money to his talent if they were in trouble, Inoki not so much. Saito said that Baba was the type of guy who would attend the nwa convention and would take the guys out to eat and drink, on the other hand Inoki would be the type of guy who would go to the same convention, get the free meal and not even say thanks.
Inoki also kept himself on top way past his expiration date. Normally the promoters who were also the champions, realized that they were getting old so they would start phasing themselves out by putting people over on the way out, ol Antonio never did that.
Apparently both Vince Sr and Jr were always nervous about dealing with Inoki because he would double cross people, he did it to Ali. Apparently their fight was supposed to be worked but he betrayed Ali by legit trying to hurt him.
Then Inoki almost killed wrestling in Japan for his ego. He created the Inoki Bombaye events. In those events he did elaborate entrances of getting carried to the ring in a throne, in another entrance he was carried to the ring while being crucified. Inoki got the brilliant idea of putting his fake wrestlers against mma fighters, the pro wrestlers got slaughtered and Inoki would later berate them. Yuji Nagata never recovered after getting humiliated, a young Shinsuke Nakamura got a broken eye socket and lost in under a minute. New Japan almost had to declare bankruptcy after this.
There’s also the embellishment of his political career, apparently he wasn’t that respected and people started seeing through his bullshit after he was rumored to deal with Yakuzas.
Another weird Inoki fact. Apparently he had young boys who carried him around and massaged his feet.

I'll go with Mil Mascaras. He never drew more than a handful of dimes outside of Mexico, yet thought he should be able to dictate what other promotions would do with him. He never sold for pretty much anyone, had a weak ass offense, and seemingly has been sucking in his gut for the past 40 years. I've never once heard anyone say anything positive about him in any shoot interview outside of his family. When Mick Foley buries you, you done f'd up.

All I know of the guy is that Simon Inoki was pretty much Antonio’s Smithers flunkie, it would be hilarious if he hated him all this time.

Inoki is by far the winner, but Brimstone is a fantastic candidate for ego size in proportion to actual output

Mascaras and Hogan were egotistical and Hogan's ego hurt companies, but Inoki pretty much killed any credibility in Japan by putting wrestlers into legit MMA fights. Wrestlers are tough, but that was such a bad decision that led to business sinking so far that Inoki didn't have a choice but to sell New Japan - and they've barely acknowledged him since.

Inoki convinced himself that he was the toughest man ever just because he kicked Muhammad Ali on the shins and beating up a fat guy, therefore his fake wrestlers should also be tough. I think that’s part of the reason why I preferred All Japan growing up. Baba never tried to pass the bullshit pro wrestling as real like Inoki did on a regular basis.

I think it's hard to top Inoki and Mil Mascaras, but is it crazy to think Verne Gagne at least deserves consideration? The guy retired as champion when he was 55 after ending a nearly 5 year title run of Nick Bockwinkel(the longest ever in the AWA, outside his own 7 year run). Also, he completely screwed up with Hogan and a lot of that seemed to do with ego, even to the point where he wanted to fight him and have Iron Sheik break his leg.

Verne also constantly reminded the people that he was the greatest champion ever and he could come out of retirement at any minute. Bobby Heenan even joked that Greg was never the AWA champion because Verne wanted to be the only champion in the family.

Here’s another nominee, Carlos Colon.
He retired in his sixties without putting anyone over. For thirty years it was the same feud with Abdullah the Butcher, even with the crowds getting smaller and smaller. Colon was just the poor man’s version of Inoki.
Even when his sons were on the main event, Carlos still made the storylines about him and put the camera on him most of the time.
f***ing Invader, who owes his life to Carlos because he got him off jail for killing Brody, said that Colon ruined WWC because he didn’t retired on time and Ray Gonzalez over as his successor.

If Inoki really wanted to hurt Ali, he would. Not by being a tough guy or anything, but trapping legs with legs and then submissions to someone who's not trained in the thing can be very hurtful. And yes, the match was going to be a work but it was Ali's handlers that messed the whole thing by changing the rules at the last hour. Inoki didn't double cross anyone there, he just adhered to the rules as they wanted. Also, Inoki and Ali became friends over the whole ordeal.
Also, all his "Different Style Fights" were works and he had a bunch of them, not just Ali and "a fat guy" (I suppose you're talking about the Great Antonio thing, which was normal wrestling match that Inoki started shooting in because Antonio wasn't selling anything). Willem Ruska, Chuck Weppner, Akram Pahlawan , Willie Williams. All legit greats in their fields and all former Inoki opponents.

I'll go with Mil Mascaras. He never drew more than a handful of dimes outside of Mexico, yet thought he should be able to dictate what other promotions would do with him. There’s a funny video of Mil and his brother Dos Caras working against Brody and Hansen in All Japan. Well Mil was up to his usual tactics of not selling and working stiff, Brody got fed up and just hit him back, for the rest of the match Mil Mascaras avoided Brody and just worked with Hansen. I'll beg to differ, sir. I might be a little biased as I think Mil Mascaras is absolutely terrible, but outside of Mexico and southwestern US, I can't think of anytime he drew. When I say that, I mean he, himself, not that he was paired with someone in that territory that could draw regardless of the opponent.
