Can't call Savage,Warrior or Heenan to celebrate Gene so nobody should really have a issue with this. Why not Flair? As long as he says MEAAAAAAN WOOOOOOO BY GOD GENE!

Why do they need someone out there anyways to memorialize Gene? They rarely do such a thing in the first place. Usually it's a memorial picture at the beginning, wrestlers on the ramp to start, and bells ringing. Not disparaging Mean Gene or anything but they're going out of their way to bring Hogan back hoping that him speaking about his late friend will be what brings him goodwill with the Fandom.

Do you have a recording of Ric saying that? Link me, and I'll say I'm wrong, but if you don't have the words coming out of Flair's mouth, on tape, you're just deflecting. Is Teddy Long recounting it good enough? (Warning for language, obviously.) www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFG42Wxkjt8Or moving past race to the broader spectrum of Ric Flair being an awful person, I recall the police report for the Planeride from Hell bringing up him exposing himself and trying to get stewardesses to grope his Lil Naitch. I'm not here to stick up for Hogan, but the (completely justified) disgust for him is no excuse to give a free pass to plenty of his contemporaries.

When you strip it all away: Warrior's homophobia was more offensive to me than Hogan's homophobia because I liked Hogan's character more than I did Warrior's. Hulk Hogan's racism is more offensive than Flair's racism if you ask people who liked Flair's character more than Hogan's. Austin's wife beating is less offensive than another wrestlers indiscretions for Stone Cold fans. We need to admit we're ALL on that spectrum somewhere and hypocrites to a man. If we weren't able to rationalise in our head why we are so fond of these, objectively speaking, horrible, horrible human beings we'd never be able to switch on the WWE Network again. Cognitive dissonance is essential for any wrestling fan. Apart from those who are now growing up idolising people whose biggest faux pas is breaking wind in the back seat of Ride Along. *shakes fist angrily in old man way*. The rest of us, we're terrible people who won't admit it. Amazing. Every word of what you just said was wrong.

Yeah, when it comes to stuff like this, I don’t give WWE the benefit of the doubt. I just don’t. I’m seeing this as WWE using Gene Okerlund’s death to soft pedal Hogan’s return to regular WWE TV. I’m not freaking out over it. WWE does shitty stuff a lot. Just add this to the pile.

Sad thing is, this is classier than how they handle most deaths.

But there aren't many who we idolised growing up who haven't proven themselves to be scumbags over the years. At least very few alive. Whether we're bothered by how much of a scumbag they were depends hugely on whether we were fans of their characters. A reality that clearly some people are resistant to accepting but it's true of those of us who have emotional attachments to wrestlers from our adolescence.

Does there need to be a tribute beyond a video package at all? Jesus Christ. Yes the guy is a legend. When someone dies in every other sport they manage to get by with a video and maybe a couple quick speeches. It doesn’t need to be a f***ing production, and it definitely doesn’t need to include Hogan.

I wonder if this means they're unveiling a Mean Gene statue (hey, it's not out of the question).

Ric Flair. There. Promos EXACTLY as iconic, and multiple people in this thread have said so. Quit pretending like there's not an answer to your question. The Ric Flair that Teddy Long said used the N word against? That Ric Flair? This is what I mean by the selective outrage of the wrestling fan. The problem is for any of us who are over 25ish, the people we grew up idolising are a pool of pretty much disreputable human beings across the board. We rationalise it by pretending that if our favourite was a racist, homophobe, wife beater or drug abuser that it doesn't matter, it's the other guy who we didn't like whose racism, homophobia, wife beating and drug abusing makes him the real scumbag. I'm afraid it's an hypocrisy all fans over a certain age, which would include any fan legitimately qualified to have have an opinion on who is suitable to pay tribute to Mean Gene, are guilty of. Myself included. Not everyone is being hypocritical here. If that Flair story is true, then f*** him too.

Someone who isn't an admitted racist would be nice. So someone on the current roster with no connection to Gene? Or a video package so you don't have to book anyone?

I’m not freaking out over it. WWE does shitty stuff a lot. Just add this to the pile. Exactly how I feel about it. This isn’t a hall of fame induction. Hogan doesn’t need to be there. I wouldn’t blame people for feeling that bringing Hogan in for this feels disrespectful due to the controversy surrounding Hogan. It does take the focus off Gene and makes it about Hogan. Hogan has been pretty protected ever since they’ve considered bringing him back. The Andre doc got a positive reaction because it paid tribute to Andre. The Saudis didn’t care about Hogan’s comments. They don’t have the same social climate as we do. It was a safe way to have him brought out to a live crowd. This is just the third step in putting Hogan out there. They’re hyping it to prepare a positive reaction and pop a rating. Hogan’s going to be paying respects to a friend that no one can say anything bad about. Let’s get a guy that just about everyone can say something bad about to do it. “People won’t dare shit on it!” - Vince, maybe. Fans also love to be part of special moments. They’re drawn to them like moths to a flame because they rarely happen and they want to brag about being part of them. As much as people aren’t pleased about it, they’ll watch and that’s what Vince wants.
