Hello, I've been lingering on here for several years and even joined up a couple of months ago, but never got around to posting. Always found you all too intimidating! I love this board, and I thought it was time I started to involve myself.
Anyway, having been a massive fan of the WWE in the past and then lapsing, I have recently got back into it following an extended period off work. Always kept up with it online and was excited to see the Becky stuff after hearing about it. Maybe it's my age, but I just don't get her popularity. It seems like a really forced, broad rip off of Stone Cold, and it just doesn't seem natural or realistic to me. I suppose that's not important in wrestling though. I know about the whole evolution of the character with the grievance with Charlotte which was a great start. Maybe it's the shameless latching on done by Stephanie, or the appalling attempt at a limp with the crutches but for some reason it just doesn't click with me. My wife caught me watching the wrestling when she came home the other day, and it was during a Becky and Ronda segment from a few weeks ago and Becky just looked horribly forced. As she watched it, I actually felt a little like I'd rather she's walked in on me watching something of Brazzers!
What am I missing? Can you explain it to me?

She's always had some type of fan support. Be it the underdog character, people were rooting for her, and "The Man" persona, is someone who is not going to back down, or be the underdog, anymore. People have been enjoying this side of Becky. (I understand that some are just not fans), but, Becky definitely has a connection with the fans.

This storyline is a really bad showcase of Becky. But she is someone loveable,with great acting abilities and charisma. Someone that fought constantly ,basically never injured and always with a positiveattitude,yet she was never in the spotlight.
So when she finally stood up people latched on her, it was somethin building up inside for a long time. And the way she acted so sure and cocky fo herself,kickin ass at the same time just reinforced the love.

She’s Stone Cold Becky McGregor with Wolverine healing abilities(but only when being attacked)
I don’t even mind her, but the presentation is somewhat missing the mark, par for course for the WWE though so what are you going to do?

She's likeable. She's charismatic. She's talented. And for the longest time, that was it. She was pushed just enough to keep people invested in her, but always kept as more of a "solid hand" to help others get over. Then SummerSlam happened and, whether by WWE's design or (probably) not, we entered this area where Becky being a "solid hand" wasn't going to be enough anymore. The fans wouldn't be satiated by the same old while watching the same people get opportunities and Becky continue to be starved of them. From there, she evolved into The Man, and the idea of this never-say-die face resonated with the crowds.

The last part, about your wife watching with you.. is a tad much. The selling may look "forced", because it is. They're selling the product to the fans. And... DAMN THE MAN, AND SCREW THE WOO! (that's still hilarious, to me  ) |

Bubba Ray actually said today that Becky recently has sounded like Roman did years ago and that's too nonchalant, too relaxed and if that's what you're seeing then I can see how you'd think that and why you're wondering why she's this popular. She had more fire months ago before this whole Ronda thing popped off.

The fans like to feel that they're in the driver's seat, so they respond when WWE seems to be taking their cues instead of forcing something or someone down their throat. The fans see their girl getting pushed and the quality of the storytelling is secondary. She could be out there juggling and some people would think it was the greatest thing they've seen in some time. So, there's nothing to get except for the fact that a lot of fans like her and want her to get a push and WWE is pushing her.

She's talented, charismatic, and has a good look. It's really as simple as that. If you don't like her, ok. People have different tastes. But there's nothing to really "get" about it.

I hate her character/gimmick, but she delivers in the ring. So she's like if Baron Corbin had Bret Hart's ring skills.

Nah I think a lot of things don't make sense without seeing the build, especially something that's been growing for years like Becky's rise. You can't convey that feeling in a video package*. Even worse if there's been some mis-steps in recent weeks, there's enough goodwill banked for most to overlook most faults but that's not going to be there for OP. She's still my favourite and her WM match is the one I'll be tuning in for but my interest has dropped since Steph first got involved. Feels like she's being forced into being the next Punk/ Bryan/Austin/Cena when I preffered her being the first Becky Lynch. If you ain't seem it OP watch her appearence on Raw before s.series, the bloody becky gif you've probably seen. *Well I say that but WWE do some awesome ones. |

I just fail to see why it is so popular. I'm almost certain it is because I haven't been invested in it long term and I was just looking to know the background to her popularity. As far as I can see, in the short time I've been watching again, the turn by Ronda with the "Screw the Man and screw the Woo!" was the best thing that's happened in this. Again, I haven't watched a lot of it and many will disagree I'm sure. But "Screw the Woo" was the moment that made me really want to see this fight at Wrestlemania. As a latecomer, it just seems that they are trying too hard to make Becky seem like the plucky anti hero, which she may have worked hard to achieve over time and I've just jumped on at the wrong moment. The use of Steph as that cliched "authority figure" doesn't help either, it just isn't convincing. |

The last couple weeks haven't done her any favors and I get why The Man character would wear thin on some people, but she's so popular for many reasons.
Her energy is infectious. She loves what she does (which isn't to say the others don't) and it comes through every time she's out there. She's also a huge dork and it doesn't come off as forced, that's just how she really is.
Not the natural in the ring that Charlotte is or as athletic as the other women, but still very good in the ring.
Top 10 (maybe even top 5) in the whole company on the mic. As far as the women go, easily the best.
Comes off as the nicest person ever IRL, especially with her fans.
Lastly, she is gorgeous. I like to look at her and I think she's the most attractive woman they have in both looks and personality.
If you're a Becky fan who's been following since 2016 or even last August, it's been a hell of a fun ride even with some of the hiccups along the way. If you're just tuning in now... I can understand it.

There was an organic build to Becky becoming the hottest act in the company, where she seemed to finally be getting a shot at something people supported her wanted so badly. For whatever reason, the WWE then decided to take this summer-long buildup for her character, shortcut a rival to the same position (Charlotte getting into the title match at SummerSlam), and had her lose in a spot that felt reminiscent of Daniel Bryan's 18-second WrestleMania match moment. She snapped, and the crowd immediately cheered and got behind her. That said, the WWE decided instead to try to not only tell a story like she had turned heel (even including a "you people never supported me" set of lines on her following appearance on Smackdown), but literally got into Twitter fights with people saying what we were told versus what we wanted to hear were two different things: No matter what they tried, people kept cheering for Becky even when she was supposedly the heel of the story. It took them a good 3-4 weeks before they decide to go with the organic build taking place, and the crowd was louder than ever for a single person on the roster compared to everything else that had become stagnant in the process. When Becky won the belt from Charlotte, this set up a match between her and Ronda at Survivor Series. However what was originally thought to be a throwaway match for its Bragging Rights-style matches, it too became one of the hottest angles the show had seen in ages, including one now-infamous shot of Becky after an altercation leading to the PPV:  This moment pretty much solidified her momentum going into the match...however thanks to a mistimed punch from Nia Jax leading to the image you see above, it actually injured Becky to the point of taking her off the show. They used this to their advantage thanks to the crowd reactions making Ronda vs Becky's match becoming a much bigger deal. They set the storyline in line for a WrestleMania match to take place by having Becky enter last-minute and win the thing. HOWEVER...once the ball got rolling, the WWE decided that the storyline needed more McMahons to give it some sort of weight and purpose. While Vince would like you to believe this means they can get better ratings and make it seem more important by having the authority in there...instead it's degraded the momentum of the whole thing by derailing the purpose of the Royal Rumble win, inserting company-favorite Charlotte (whether it's storyline-specific or not is irrelevant at this point), and really haven't had a way to long-term establish what they're going to do with WrestleMania less than four weeks away. Combine the above with Ronda's VERY green promo work/social media presence, Becky's perpetual kayfabe injuries, and of course the McMahon factor, it's taken a very organic and compelling storyline and driven it straight into the ground like it has so many other great characters in the past (see: Woken Matt, Miz vs Daniel Bryan, etc.). I'll defer to edgestar's response on this one. If you want more nuance in the storyline, examples in pro wrestling are going to be few and far between. To TL;DR the whole thing: if you weren't around last summer, the build and hype around her character isn't going to make as much sense to be honest. You can go check out those episodes from the past to see where she was to where it was built (fast-forward through everything that isn't her storyline specifically), but trying to explain her popularity is no different than trying to explain the popularity of any wrestler with people unfamiliar with the product. |

I think it’s a fair criticism to say she comes off forced. That’s a problem with most of the talent today. When Austin was on the come up (1996-97) he sounded completely authentic, and that combined with his natural talent played a big role in his climb. I think today’s generation doesn’t care for authentic. Everyone knows it is fake (and HHH has no problem admitting it during the show) so the fans are left just cheering for the people they like regardless of the character.
As far as your girl walking in on you, I don’t even watch the current product aside from YT videos and I don’t blame you. A lot of the WWE (and wrestling in general) is cringey nowadays. Don’t know if it’s my age or the product is simply not geared to me. The latter is probably the case for you and me.
