I agree that something will have to change with him...not entirely but as WWE champion he is gonna have to develop an edge to him because we have seen it every single time....once that journey is over with and whoever becomes the top dog if you are being hokey or whatever that crowd loyalty will shift in an instance. Hell it even the gawd damn Rock had it happen to him and he had to turn into HollyWood Rock to eventually win them back. With Rock I think it was much more about him blatantly being on borrowed time and shifting his priorities elsewhere, at a point in time when wrestling was basically widely seen as something you're in for the rest of your life, possibly combined with him rapidly becoming out of place with the way the whole look and feel of the company was upended around that point in time. I really don't see there being any danger of crowds turning on Kofi. Really the only time they ever have was lame-ass early era New Day and by now the group's developed an extra five years of respect from that point.

Having the championship did not detract from the character or add more seriousness to Cena, Foley, Rock, or HBK, so here's hoping he'll be fine.

Cena's rejection was a deeply complex and intricate situation, but there's a lot of really big differences in the cases. No way Kofi spends years on top; this is going to be a short run well under a year long and it's not going to come with superman booking or anything of the sort. The crowd is having no trouble buying him now as a viable world champion even with the comedy stuff he's done in the past, and since this story began he hasn't really been cutting ten minute comedy promos that are just thinly veiled ass eating jokes, but also I don't think him showing his funnier side is all that bad if it doesn't overstay its welcome with the crowd. New Day has always been presented as a team of dudes who like to mess around rather than as all-out comedy guys. It's all about balance and not going too far with it, I think it'll be fine. Ambrose stayed over as WWE champion in the early Smackdown days and he was super deep into comedy-leaning material too; he made it work and the crowd stayed with it. New Day has always been presented as the guys who are silly as f*** but will absolute whip somebody's ass. There's zero reason to change that formula It's all fun and games until the bell rings. It works for them, they have the ring skills and the comedic chops to make everything line up perfectly, and it's pushed them into heights of all-time tag team greatness already. Now it's the leg up to give Kofi the world title and cement a hall of fame career. Can't understand a world where variety in the show isn't a good thing and letting this sort of act have a run up top isn't a nice break from things. The last face champ we had with the belt was very serious and kind of a drag.

New Days feud with the Usos proved they can cut it as serious faces.
He doesnt need to change a thing. You gotta dance with who you came to the dance with.

So when he becomes champion, they will write him plain and boring? Sounds about right. Basically, yeah.

Kofi is fine. Cena was a top guy for years, and wasn't always super serious. Kofi, and the fans, are gonna be just fine. Mick Foley put a sock on his hand during matches. Kofi will be fine.

I don’t think Kofi is a long term main eventer regardless. He will get his moment (if the company can avoid Booker T part 2) and will settle into an mid card/upper mid card role after that. I don’t think he has to change anything.

I agree the pancakes have to go but not that much else. He needs a bit more range on his voice when cutting a promo, he should study Bryan for tips, DB went from "aw shucks guys" to "this voice is going to dominate the whole area and have you hanging on my every word" very quickly.
If anyone the guy who should tone down the wackiness is Woods, dude has so much untapped charisma it'd be a sin not to give his character a much needed reboot and becoming champ Kofi's spokesman/promo guy would be the chance to do it.
As for Big E, I think the OTT nature of the character is too close to his real life personality and any reboot would be a downgrade (hardly set the world alight pre TND did he?) so keep him as he is.

Ah the Jack Swagger theory. That worked awesomely for him. I still mourn the loss of the Swagger Soaring Eagle. A star before his time. Godspeed SSE.

Kofi has never really NOT been over. He might not have always been mega over, but the guy has been getting positive responses his entire tenure there.

I mean,,,they’re balancing it just fine right now I don’t see any reason they wouldn’t just keep doing the same thing after.

I have a feeling we won't be seeing as much goofiness in the future from Kofi, as I feel his winning the title will be the beginning of the end of The New Day. They'll be feuding by summer, and we'll be seeing a more serious main event face Kofi (though notice how I didn't say champion).
