Getting fired or quitting because of wearing shorts would have been up there with Cas getting released for beating up a little person as the weirdest way to lose a job. what about quitting after 2 matches because you didn't want to cut your hair... and then cutting your hair a few weeks later anyway. Being fired for being the wrong one legged guy still tops the list though.

Yet they didn’t fire the guy who hired the wrong one legged guy despite having Zach’s name, age, phone number, address and what he looked like. Johnny still f***ed it up.

Not gonna lie, it would have been great if this is what made Cole finally snap and quit the company.

Look, so long as your dick's not hanging out, I really don't care what the commentators wear.
Doesn't help that yeah, tuxedo shorts are silly, but not any less obnoxious than Lawler's Ed Hardy shirts for years, or the time Punk wore a Charles Manson shirt on commentary like he was 14.

If you come close to quitting on the day of the biggest show of the year because the idea of wearing pants offends you, you should probably just go ahead and do it because the job isn't going to get easier. A) The shorts thing itself wasn't the damned point. If there was a problem with him wearing the shorts, the proper time and manner to say something to him was during the couple of hours he spent in the gorilla position alongside Vince and without yelling at him. I would not even be shocked if he had brought a pair of tuxedo pants if they had an issue with the shorts, though he does seem married to the notion of wearing shorts whenever he can get away with it. B) Do you know why he can afford to leave the job? It is because he earned just under $3M/year as an NFL kicker. Do you know why he is no longer doing that, despite working a position where 15-20 year careers are not uncommon for the best kickers (which, for the record, he was amongst those select few)? It's because he finally got tired dealing with former Colts GM (and notable colossal dickwad), Ryan Grigson. Quite frankly, when Cole was yelling at him he had to have had some flashbacks to Grigson, which undoubtedly played a role in him to telling Cole to f*** himself and almost quitting. Grigson flat out hated McAfee, which was made worse by the fact that the Colts owner, Jim Irsay, had forced him to resign McAfee in 2014 when his contract expired. Grigson flat out told McAfee before the ink had even dried on that contract that if it had been up to him, Pat would be out of the league and he would not have resigned him (bear in mind, McAfee had just been named a 1st team All-Pro player by the NFL just a month before Grigson told him this. Grigson had repeatedly fined McAfee over meaningless bullshit just out of spite, to the point that former coach Chuck Pagano had a talk with Grigson and made Grigson agree that Pagano had to sign off on any player fines, which stopped that practice for a stretch. However, the final straw for McAfee followed a bad Thanksgiving Day loss by the Colts to the Steelers. The game highlighted Grigson's failure to put together a team with adequate talent to compete with any contenders, and his reaction to the heat he was getting was to lash out at his favorite target. Grigson called McAfee to his office, started screaming at him and fined him something like $50K for posting a picture of himself in the equipment room 3 weeks prior, and then threatened to suspend him over it as well. As you might imagine, McAfee did not take too well to that, but it got worse when Grigson screamed at him that it was McAfee's fault that they lost that game (in the event you did not know, McAfee was the team's punter, a position that really cannot ever be held responsible for any blow-out losses). At this point, many people could overhear the ensuing argument, especially after McAfee responded with a remark about Grigson signing the team's QB to a $149M contract and did not think to bother putting an offensive line in front of him to keep him from getting killed, something that had been a sore point for Grigson to that point. That conversation apparently ended with McAfee telling Grigson to go f*** himself and storming off. He swung by Pagano's office and told him if he had anything to do with what just happened (remember, at that point Pagano was supposed to sign off on any player fines), then he could go f*** himself too and then stormed off. Yeah, he was so pissed that he cursed out the nicest guy in the NFL. (It is worth noting that Pagano and McAfee still keep in frequent contact, so this situation was not something that hurt their relationship for long). By the time that Pagano had found out what had actually happened (Grigson had fined McAfee without consulting Pagano, which is especially noteworthy because Pagano had already publicly commented weeks ago about the picture and had no issue with it) and then tracked down McAfee to apologize for not preventing that confrontation, McAfee had already decided he was done and would be retiring at the end of the season because he had not intention continuing to work under Grigson. He then spent the next two months making arrangements for his post-NFL career, which meant that he already had commitments in place when Grigson was finally fired (about 2-3 years after most fans wanted it done). C) This part is not important, but people were commenting on McAfee skipping leg days. This almost certainly is a byproduct of doing the exact opposite during his time in the NFL (I do recall him saying that it also played into why he preferred to wear shorts over the years, as they were the only things that were particularly comfortable). His legs were so overmuscled (remember, his job entailed kicking a football really long distances) that it was actually damaging the joints in his legs and hips. I would not be shocked if he never does another dead lift or squat for the rest of his life.

It's pro wrestling.
Announcers and interviewees have always dressed eccentricaly.
Of all the things to get wound up by someone wearing shorts is low down the list ffs.

This is really a good example of just terrible communication on the part of the WWE.
I for one really like McAfee's shtick. And far from what users like This Charming Mothman have shouted 6/7 times about how McAfee is an idiot throughout this thread (geez, you don't like him, we get it!), McAfee's got a point. For starters, tuxedo shorts are a thing, Vince confirmed he loved it (albeit too late).
Michael Cole, to be fair to the guy, only shouted because he was worried McAfee would lose his job over it. And he apologised to him too.
Ultimately, McAfee was right to storm off like he did. Getting told in private to change? Sure. Getting shouted at in front of the McMahons and a bunch of guys McAfee respects for something Cole could have just checked with Vince? No bueno. Just shows a lack of respect.
The hypocrisy also of people in this thread saying that Shawn Michaels is allowed to dress like an ageing stripper but McAfee can't wear tuxedo shorts. No. Either there's a dress code for EVERYONE, or nobody. End of story.

Everyone seems like a tool in this story except for Vince. He's clearly hip: You telling me no GIF exists of him doing the 555 95472 dance at the Rage Party? (Yes, I had to look up the name of that particular Peanuts character.)

it's the big show of the year and the company tell you to wear a suit, you wear a suit. it's not that hard to understand. It is a suit. Just a suit with shorts and it’s a new style that’s emerging. Anyway. Good for Pat to standing up for himself.

On Twitter, Alex Del Barrio just shared his own experiences with the culture among WWE announcers. Basically, according to him, Michael Cole is a thin skinned guy, who fosters a toxic culture among announcers, where people get yelled at for completely random reasons.

Yeah, the guy who was chewed out constantly while he was coming up turns around and chews out his subordinates? Imagine that.

Which is kinda amazing because Cole covered war zones and Lawler's heart attack cool as a cucumber.

Yeah, the guy who was chewed out constantly while he was coming up turns around and chews out his subordinates? Imagine that. It's just more evidence of the fundamental lack of professionalism, in the structure of the WWE. Sure, you get abusive assholes in all branches of business, including the entertainment industry. But this sort of thing appears to be the norm in the WWE. Crazy boss who tacitly encourages subordinates to be short tempered and confrontational, which probably leads to a culture where new ideas are raised extremely tentatively, if at all. No wonder it's old guys like Michael Hayes who still hold so much influence, a lot of the younger writers are probably terrified of offering anything but agreement.

Yeah, the guy who was chewed out constantly while he was coming up turns around and chews out his subordinates? Imagine that. I get what you're saying but he's been there over 20 years. He was chewed out for maybe 2 of those years. Him being a jackass now is entirely on him. This is not aimed at who I've quoted in the slightest, but there's been a fascinating insight in this thread about how people twist and ignore info to fit their agendas.
