So I finally decided to catch up on stuff i missed out on and thought I’d check out Austin before he took off and am on the RAW after KOTR ‘ 96 and HHH had a match against Ahmed Johnson that got a bit of time and wasn’t a total squash like I was lead to believe since he was punished for a while which I imagined lasted till a little bit before the next kotr. But I guess there’s a month inbeteeen the curtain call and post 1996 KOTR but yeah doesn’t seem like such a bad burial getting a match with the IC champ the day after you u were supposed to win KOTR

It's a big part of Austin's story but a small part of Trips.

From most reports, the punishment wasn't immediate. McMahon originally fobbed off the whole thing when it went down - it was the people around him that kept on about it that made him decide to set an example.

The narrative told was that he fell all the way to the bottom and was losing nightly to the Brooklyn Brawler & Barry Horowitz.
He was IC champ by October.
Narrative does not fit reality.

It's laughably overblown.
It lasted about 3 months.
They always show clips of him in the hog pen match whenever they talk about his "punishment" for the curtain call even though the hog pen match was about 6 months before the curtain call even happened.
It's just used to try and show HHH overcame adversity and made it to the top but it's nonsense. He was protected and pushed from day one. Being pals with Shawn Michaels helps in that regard.

Here's HHH's matches from right after the MSG show through mid-August, when he was finally put back into an angle and started winning again. Losing to Brooklyn Brawler? No. But he spent over two months being Mark Mero's chew toy without a single booked win throughout it.
Ooooh!!! Maybe this can be the next big HHH Wrestlemania match! HHH finally getting his win back from Mero.

I believe HHH got the full jobber treatment after his Raw loss to Jake Roberts, having Revelations the snake put over his prone body. Bradshaw lost Roberts on TV around the same time without that happening.

Absolutely. The WWE love a story of a guy clawing their way to the top and never pass up an opportunity to tell tall tales that hype up Triple H's legacy in some way, They always had big plans for him, he'd gotten a solid push from day 1 and all this career destroying punishment did as stall his climb for a couple of months.

They didn’t keep him at the bottom of the barrel because he wanted to say goodbye to his roody poo friends at Madison Square Garden. No, they kept him at the bottom of the barrel because he absolutely sucks.

Hmm. This screams "card changed because somebody missed their flight."

Hmm. This screams "card changed because somebody missed their flight." Yeah, "missed" their flight because they didn't want to walk into Scranton. (I hear that town's boring and just full of office buildings. )

I honestly don’t think his punishment was as bad as it’s played up. Yes the KOTR win was pulled but after that he had a few stagnant months where he jobbed and that’s it. By August he was back in a storyline (Perfect stealing the women) and by October he was IC Champion. I don’t think he was really punished at all.
He sat out 3 PPVs, was on the preshow of the 4th (losing) back on the 5th PPV (losing) and was IC Champion by the 6th PPV

The narrative of is punishment is in the same vein as that time DX drove an Army vehicle to a WCW show and apparently caused the complete downfall of the company then and there.

Beat him to win his first IC title. Pretty sure Alex Wright is the only guy with a 100% record against HHH that is still alive.

Punishments don't get much worse than delaying a KOTR win for a year. Same thing my parents use to do to me when I was a naughty kid.

Ok BEFORE the current call lets look at HHH and where he was. He was unbeaten for the most part until the Royal Rumble 96 where the whole pre show he lost by reversed. Didn't win the rumble had a good showing. Next big PPV was Wrestlemania where he was legit squashed to the Ultimate Warrior. This is why I say is overblown being he did this before the current call and both Hall and Nash where still with the company. So the curtain call was May 1996 so in the five months period what was so bad before he won the I-C that was worse that before it happened? Nothing stands out because he was still used had I-C title matches. So if you getting title shots, is that a punishment? He also had a few matches with Shawn over the summer on TV. So ok He for while jobbed Marc Mero for two months of house shows which ok Mero was also a guy Vince wanted to be the next face of the company. But is that still worst than before. feuding with A Henry Godwinn and Duke the Dumpster? And getting squashed on the BIGGEST stage? I really don't think so. It's about even IMO.

Those constant loses to Marc Mero go a long way to explaining why HHH is the way he is.
