New 52 had some good stories here and there, but it was overall such a mess. Rebirth felt more like a return to form.
But yeah, the darker and grittier stuff used to be just on the Vertigo imprint, then it started overtaking the main DC label. I think the Nolan Batman movies' success is where DC and Warner really started pushing grimdark for everything, even if it didn't make sense for the characters.

I'm really not even sure how the Nolan movies developed a reputation for being dark and gritty. More grounded (ish, they're still pretty insane) and set on a consistent tone than the Schumaucher movies, sure, but all three movies are pretty optimistic about lifting society up and giving them something good to rally around. Even Dark Knight, in spite of having some pretty serious and dark moments where things go awry, is still largely making that the central thesis of the movie, and it's also like a genuinely funny movie with a lot of good moments of levity.

They were being compared to the Burton movies, which in hindsight are pretty campy, and the Schumacher movies, which are the campiest things known to mankind. In that light, Nolan's movies are dark and gritty as f***.

I just started reading DC Metal and DC Death Metal and I take it all back.
DC's gone so GrimDark that I think we timewarped back to the 90's.

When in doubt they just tied everything to Batman Who Laughs God, the Batman Who Laughs is just such an utterly shit character. There's merit to the idea - one of the better early episodes of The Batman basically uses that concept, with Joker deciding to be Batman now while gassing Bruce to start turning more into being like him (though they crowbarred Penguin into the climax for no apparent reason) - but just, "Bruce goes crazy and starts killing everyone then he goes to other universes to kill everyone there too," is just so incredibly lazy and stupid and tryhard.

Batman Who Laughs was an intriguing concept as far as just doing Darkworld Batman as a whole on top of the other characters with potential but they just went well people liked him since throw all our eggs in this basket and involved him in EVERYTHING!!! Major oversaturation to the point they damn near had everyone as a Laughs character

TL;DR – the figures Team Rock gave to Deadline included home release revenue they expect the movie to take, not what it has actually taken.

What a stupid hill to die on The Rock is so staunchly against losing that he will manipulate data to say the film he’s spent the longest time making didn’t bomb.

Rock, you might as well change your appearance to Bryan Clark, because you my friend have got yourself a Black Adam Bomb.
