I'm about halfway between Melbourne and South Australia, and the smoke smell has made it down here. (Or another bushfire's started near me - it's currently 42.1 degrees celcius where I am, so both are possible.).
I saw the pictures of the haze over Melbourne, it's unreal. I hope they've got enough ambo's for the bushfire/thunderstorm asthma.

I hate to say this and hope like hell it isn't true, but it's likely that as the climate continues to shift that this is only going to get worse. Real nightmare scenarios in the offing.

It’s been a real tough few weeks here. I won’t go into politics.. I’ll just say it was very poor for a certain someone to take a Hawaiian holiday during this.
Yeah it was Smokey down on the Mornington Peninsula in southern Victoria.
I hope they put the fires out soon. Cause we are not in the hottest part of summer yet. So there is an almost certain chance of more bushfires in other parts of the country starting. And our fire brigades (which are mostly volunteer based) and their resources may get stretched.

I live pretty much right in the middle of the Sydney basin (Parramatta for those who know Sydney). This is the worst it has ever been. The smoke has been choking, some days spending any more than 5 minutes outside & you feel like you have smoked 15 cigarettes, my father is ill & cannot go outside at the moment because of his lungs. We can't hang washing outside to try otherwise it smells like smoke. We have to close all windows because of the ash. Today was 44 degrees Celsius before a cool change swept through in the early evening. More people will die this summer, more homes & businesses will be destroyed. Nothing will change as long as our nation continues to put people in power who are in bed with those who profit from the consumption of natural resources.

You know shit is bad when the area that's burning is bigger than a f***ing country! As an Englishman, I hope that all the Aussies are OK.

I live two houses, a road and a train line across from the Royal National Park in a southern suburb of Sydney... It's made for some REALLY GODDAMN nervy days when it's been in those higher temperatures and the wind is strong, because you're like... If that goes up, and the wind starts blowing from the south/south-east, my entire life is F***ED. I don't have the means to start again.

Also, that's a very good point about the firies. I truly don't understand why we don't pay all our firefighters. They're putting their lives on the line, and I'm reliably informed by someone who led a VERY adventurous life (he must have stolen some cat's nine lives) that the time he tried to outrun a bushfire was the scariest moment of his life. And he's seen and done some shit in his 89 years.

There has been a evacuation order for the East Gippsland region of Victoria due to extreme weather conditions tomorrow... meaning very hot and very dry. This is not been taken light.. EG is a major tourist hotspot and gets a lot of campers during the Christmas to New Years holiday period.
Meanwhile the four day Falls music Festival which was to headlined by Halsey and Vampire Weekend has been cancelled due to the extreme conditions (Lorne is by the coast, near the Great Ocean Road but there is a lot of eucalyptus Bush land around there.)
Be safe people.

This is terrible and unfortunately I think it is the new normal. A few years ago, when Canada was burning to the ground, we had a haze where I lived for a few days. I live in Illinois.

It was straight up bone chilling, I was sitting out on my buddy's porch, that is set up due west and just seeing the haze. I've never seen anything like it. It made the local media here.

One of my closest friends lives in an area affected by the fire and while she’s keeping me posted I do worry. There’s an 11 hour time difference between us (I’m in England), and it’s horrible to think that something could happen to her by the time I read an email she sent.
