I don't mean to make light of a life threatening situation, but this reminds me of that Midnight Oil song.

I don’t think there are any big fires in East Gippsland at the moment.
The evacuation is just a pro caution at this stage. Because it’s a lot of combustible bush land with hot and possible windy conditions later. If a fire starts it’s going to spread fast.

Residents living in nearby suburbs from me are being evacuated. I’m starting to get extremely anxious.

Seeing it covered on social media... because the tv networks aren’t interrupting their schedule to inform us of this... even the 24 hour ABC news channel. Man, that’s like in the suburbs near the damn city.

Man, that’s like in the suburbs near the damn city. Yep, the fire is around parts of Bundoora, Plenty and Mill Park. I’d expect fires up north to be in Whittlesea but right in the northern suburbs? It’s so scary.

I'd urge people not familiar with Melbourne's geography to Google where Bundoora is in relation to Melbourne. That's a bushfire 16km's from the state's capital city. It's insane, and frightening. I saw earlier people have been officially advised it's too late to leave, and to shelter indoors. I really hope we get a change in the weather and the winds calm down. ETA: There's a video on this page showing what it's like being in a house surrounded by a bushfire (fortunately the house/family) survived. It's f***ing scary as. www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/dramatic-footage-shows-bilpin-family-engulfed-by-blaze-20191230-p53nkh.html

One of Victoria’s eastern most towns Mallacoota is cut off. Fire is surrounding the tourist town and about 4000 people are on the beach with instructions to head into the water if the fire gets too close

The sky in Mallacoota was pitch black at 9 in the morning. It's completely cut off and probably the vast majority of the people stuck there are tourists who aren't even local to the region itself.

Homes have been lost in multiple states.. and I can’t believe Melbourne and Sydney have not cancelled their NYE’s firework displays. Still over 10 hours until midnight so there is time for the states to stop them
I think they should be cancelled. I know it’s a new decade and all. But out of respect to lives lost and people losing their homes and properties they should just not fire them off.
You don’t need pyrotechnics to celebrate.

The flip side, I suppose, is that they've used it as a fundraising opportunity. It still feels really inappropriate, though. They could have fundraiser without the fireworks. I hope in the future they move towards light shows instead of fireworks; with what they can do these days it could be just as impressive, and not as risky as shooting off pyrotechnics during bushfire season.

Just woke up in New Zealand and switched to the news, it's pretty much the lead story here. From what they were saying, the state of Victoria has lost 500 THOUSAND hectares of land, and 1300 homes destroyed in the New South Wales area, with temperatures expected to jump up again on Friday/Saturday. Such a damn tragedy, I have a lot of family living over in Oz these days who are thankfully safe so far.

An area literally larger than Belgium is on fire.
People in New Zealand are having breathing problems attributed to the smoke.
New Zealand is 2000km away.

Meanwhile the "climate change is bullshit/not a problem" crowd are like: I literally got stuck listening to some chump on the train this afternoon explaining that this is normal.

I'm English and even I'm scared for the Aussies, I wouldn't want to leave my house if this shit was happening and I can only imagine what people are going through in Australia. How can people say that climate change isn't real after this? I'm genuinely surprised that more people haven't been killed during this.

I’m not sure of the death toll .. think it’s something like 8 in Victoria, and don’t know about the other states. There has been one death as a result of the fires in Canberra that was not in a bush fire zone. A woman died from respiratory problems at a Canberra airport from the bushfire smoke www.9news.com.au/national/canberra-woman-dies-smoke-air-quality-plane/32530dcf-a5e9-4285-af5f-a53a322528c7So if there is smoke in your area, stay inside, and close all your windows. Particularly if you have respiratory conditions like asthma. Any death is too many. Be safe.
