Apparently they're putting a lot of money into it too. We'll see how this turns out.

I'm kind of torn. On one hand I feel like it'd be pretty impossible to capture the feel of One Piece in live action because its art style is such a key facet of it. On the other hand its art style is one of the big things putting me off of actually liking it.

On the other hand its art style is one of the big things putting me off of actually liking it. It took me watching the anime to truly fall in love with the series. I tried reading the manga back when it was in US Shonen Jump but it didn't click. Some years later I started the Arlong Arc in the anime and it just worked for me. That art style is difficult to latch onto. I'm hearing that for this live action show it's going to cost $9-10 million per episode. That's wild.

That’s going to be a tough task as it will be hard to create a similar art style to the manga and anime
I will give it a watch tho to see how it ranks

One thing I would really hope for with this is that they don't stick too closely to the overall look of the thing. That's a gigantic problem I have with Japan-made live action adaptations (like a Fullmetal Alchemist or a Princess Jellyfish or whatever), they get so focused on trying to recreate the exact look of all the characters that the whole thing just looks like a bunch of cheap cosplay.

I can't imagine how trying to do something like One Piece in live-action wouldn't be a budget buster for Netflix.

Luffy's fighting style is going to be CGI-heavy every time.

I remember a thread about this about a year ago, and I'll just repeat what I said in that one: They're going to have to blow a shitload of CGI money on Luffy's stretching abilities all by themselves, to say nothing of all the other Devil Fruit powered people he runs into on his quest. Why the Hell would you take the most Looney Toons-esque of all animes and try turning it live-action? Either it's going to look shitty, or it's going to be so expensive that they won't possibly make a profit from it. Possibly both.
That being said: I'll take back everything I just said if they use the 4kids One Piece Rap as their intro theme.

It also doesn't help the series have a lot of characters who are like inhumanly tall. Crocodile alone was 8 feet tall, to say nothing to monsters like Kuma or Moria.

Yea, I was about to ask the same thing The only reason I stopped a while back was because I got too damn far behind but the stories from jump are really good

Maybe this will be the version of the story that manages to keep my attention The original story doesn't have your attention? When did you stop the series? Pretty early on, all things considered. Last thing I remember was when they were on the island home of the red headed woman who technically hadn’t officially joined the crew at this point. Luffy was trapped underwater, and Sanji stretched his head onto the surface so he could breathe.

At least a live action version won't drag arcs out over 30 episodes of filler and flumpf. Thats what killed my interest, something cool would hapoen, I'd be hyped ... then we'd get 5 episodes of shit.
Skypeia killed me off. Crocodile defeated, Blackbeard appeared, a guy in a feathered coat who screams evil appeared, thr Warlords of the Sea ... I was hyped. Then we diverted to a long, drawn out, boring arc away from the awesome.

That's the Arlong Arc and pretty much the arc that either really makes someone a fan of the series or makes them quit. I pretty much tell everyone to get to the end of that arc before making their decision because it as a whole is what One Piece is really about. The next arc afterwards is another great one but if those 2 don't do it then yeah it's just not for you. Even if a series is great everyone has different tastes.

Now I'm kind of wondering about giving the show another shot, mostly on the basis that I have nothing else better to do really and I'm paying for Funimation so I might as well use it. Kind of wondering between that, Eureka Seven, and Cowboy Bebop in the, "Show I never at all liked but it's been long enough maybe I can give them a second chance," category.

I'm with the2ndevil on the anime not being able to hold my attention. If there was ever a show that needed an editor to streamline it then it's One Piece. The episodes were incredibly bloated and the plots moved at a snails pace. The only thing that kept me watching was how insane and bizarre the 4Kids dub and edits were. If censorship was an art form then that was a masterpiece of surrealism. I stopped watching when Funimation took over.
