The 2001 one very nearly happened, but Shawn showed up stone cold (no pun intended) drunk on the go-home RAW before WM17 (this is where the "they never should have made _____ Doink" meme comes from, when Shawn saw Jericho dressed as Doink for an angle) and he was sent home. The 98 return did not happen, of course, but HBK did become the on-screen WWF Commissioner who’d show up every so often. The rumors ran crazy the night of Survivor Series 1998, when it Mankind's opponent was "a former World Wrestling Federation Superstar, making his return" everyone thought that would be Shawn.

Early to mid 2010 Rumbles always had John Morrison, Carlito, Shelton Benjamin and MVP being rumored surprises.

I remember reading about Flair trying to get back to the WWF when he was having issues with Bischoff in '98. Flair even confirmed it by saying they wanted to do an angle where Reid and Ric were sitting ringside at RAW, and commentary would mention "we have a wrestling champion here tonight", and when the interviewer would finally go talk to them, they would speak to Reid instead while ignoring him (because of the possible legal issues with Ric's WCW contract). Ric said he loved it and he's sad it never happened

I remember WWE.com reporting on Brock meeting with Vince in 2005 or 2006, and then nothing cans of it. I was all kinds of excited for a Brock versus Batista matchup.

I remember reading that Paul Roma had a dark match in December 1997 before a RAW taping, but it was a one off thing.

Wasn’t Rick Rude training for a possible WWF comeback when he died? Or was he still contracted to WCW at that point?

Legion of Doom had that RAW match with RVD and Kane that was maybe going to lead to a full return, but ended up being a one-off. They had a dark match the next night at the SmackDown tapings, against CM Punk of all people. A clip from that match is in the Something Else to Wrestle episode about CM Punk.

Bruce Prichard has said there were serious contract negotiations that fell apart due to dates. Can you imagine Macho Man returning at the same time as the Warrior? Wasn’t Macho Man going to be the mystery partner for Rocky Maivia’s team at the 96 Survivor Series? I seem to remember that rumor floating around.

Henry Godwin in 2007. WWE really had flashbacks to the 90s didn't they at this time? Shawn Michaels in 1998 and 2001. Different times, different rumors of a return run. Godwinn wasn't a flashback as such. Godwinn had supposedly fallen on hard times, and HHH used a bit of pull to get him a tryout. He was beyond bad, by all accounts.

I believe Savage was rumored to be on the team with Savio Vega, Yokozuna, and Flash Funk. Their fourth guy ended up being Jimmy Snuka.

I always heard Godwin signed a developmental deal and was sent to DSW. Along with all the other rehires from the same time period that were already mentioned like Flash Funk and Gangrel.

Ric Flair in 99. It was to the point where he was literally driving around in the parking lot as they were waiting to hear back from some lawyers This was in 1998. According to Bruce Prichard Flair was supposed to return at Unforgiven 98. As someone else mentioned Flair was circling the parking lot waiting on the word to enter the building.

Seems they REALLY stank out the joint during their trial match. I really wished this surfaced as a "hidden gem" on the network.
