I actually really like Rocky 5. Lots of parallels to the first Rocky in Tommy's training before the story turns in a different direction. It's definitely a bleak movie, and Rocky Balboa was definitely needed to finish the series, but if you view Rocky 5 as a middle episode, like Empire Strikes Back, I think it's very good. I love Rocky 4, but more as a 1980s Sylvester Stallone action movie than a Rocky movie. Now 3? That's the one I can't stand. The scene on the beach between Rocky and Adrian is just AWFUL. Bad dialogue and terrible acting. "How'd everything so good get so bad?" "Why couldn't mick tell me the truth? Those fights weren't real they weren't" "I don't balieve in myself no mor! When a fighter don't believe in himself. That's it! He's/it's? Over!" "How'd you learn to get so tough?..... Cries,"I live with a fighter" Lol I like that scene but I understand why you would think it's awful

All the reporters just torch him. I have never seen one in real life where all the reporters just dump on a guy lol "For your next fight, try the redhead in the front row. I hear she comes real cheap!" Like, goddamn. Leads to one of my favourite Duke rants, too. "YOU GOTTA DAWG HIM!". Gant is a hoot in that movie. Lol. It's like whoa why are you going after her? She's just a side piece. I also like the line "He fought a guy with so much glass in his jaw he might as well be a chandolier" Now you guys are tearing down the former champ? Are these sports journalists or fans? Lol

The first Rocky is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is legitimately an incredible movie.

Rocky Balboa is my hands down favorite Rocky movie. If anyone here hasn't, I encourage you to find a copy with the director's commentary. It's fascinating listening to Stallone, and the depth and thought he puts into his movies.

The whole movie was based off of the championship fight between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner that Stallone attended and got the idea for it.

Fun fact. In Rocky 3 Clubber Lang had a sick mother, so he took money to take a dive in the fight to pay for his mother’s healthcare. {Spoiler}If you’re wondering what I’m talking about, this is what Mr. T told Simpsons producers when he was on the show. When they said “Uh, what?” He yelled “The things you don’t see!!!”

Rocky V isn't horrible, I think it's unpopular because it was such a left turn compared to III and IV in terms of tone. I believe the change of tone was a choice by Stallone to give the movie a feel of conclusion, a final chapter, a closing of the book of the story of Rocky Balboa. But after the over-campiness of Rocky IV, I think a lot of people were caught off guard by it. But Rocky V is fine for what it was. Also, George Washington Duke is an awesome character, even though he was basically Don King with a non-copyright-infringing hairstyle. People were expecting V to follow on IV’s over-the-top insanity of Rocky literally fighting a Soviet boxing super-soldier and maybe escalate that further.

I think the Creed films has a legit contention to throne of best of the series. I actually think it should end there. Also this is how I rate the Rocky Films (barring Creed 1 & II):
1>3>2>RB>4>5

The one major thing that I can't help but hate about Rocky V is the Market/Frankford train going by every 30 goddamn seconds in the end fight.
That is the most unrealistic shit I've ever seen.
And yes, that includes Rocky's 35 mile running route from 2.
P.S. I always apologize in advance whenever I watch a Rocky movie with people that aren't from Philly.

There's a decent amount of "Rocky IV" slander in this thread and I will not stand for it. Is it a classic piece of auteur cinema? No. Is it one of the most entertaining, enjoyable, rewatchable 91 minutes you can ask for? 100 percent and then some.
Also, if there's one thing I've taken away from this thread, it's that I need to give II and V a more honest rewatch. I haven't watched II in almost 20 years, since I was a younger teenager, because I felt the first hour-plus was just aggressively boring. But it wasn't a movie made for a pubescent teenager, so a fresh set of eyes will probably do it justice. As for V, I've always felt it flat-out sucked and it has large-enough holes in both the movie itself and the "Rocky" franchise that you could drive an 18-wheeler through it, but people here seem to be oddly endeared by it, so maybe I need to give it one last try.
As for the "Creed" series, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I've liked them. I went in with almost no expectations and was caught off-guard by how good "Creed" was. And a sequel built around IV? Which, as has been previously stated, is my favorite in the franchise? There was virtually no way I wasn't going to like it.
If I had to rank the "Rocky" franchise, including the "Creed" movies, it's as follows: IV, III, Creed, Balboa, Rocky, Creed 2, II, V.

Rocky V had parts of it that were good, but there's some stuff there that makes zero sense. The most glaring: Why's Paulie making all of Rocky's business dealings? I mean his history, despite the fact he'd changed for the better would disqualify him. Furthermore, why is Adrian going along with this? Rocky? He's someone who tries to see the best in people, and not exactly the brightest bulb from time to time....but Adrian was shown as the movies progressed to be pretty sharp. There's no way she would have gone along with it. 'Balboa' was the most surprising for me. That movie packs more of an emotional punch that it has an right to. Had they ended it there, I'd have been fine, but the Creed flicks have been outstanding

Rocky shrugs off cancer from Creed 1 to 2.
But boy Paulie is just the worst tub of shit imaginable.
Burt Young plays him perfectly, cuz boy he's totally unlikable. Like you can sort of see why Rocky hangs around him in the first couple as they're both kind of cast aside in society, but he's a complete parasite that actively ruins the Balboa's finances more than once and is such a belligerent asshole that Adrian's brother or not, Rocky loyalty or not, he should have been cut out of their lives.
Instead they got him a sex robot.

It doesn't factor into the plot in any way at all, as it's not even mentioned. Not sure spoiling a plot point that doesn't exist is a thing but ok.

Just bumping the thread since I added my thoughts about the three most recent films.
I hope that's not against forum rules. I know a lot of people don't bother to look at the threads past page 1, so I was hoping to get some discussion of the newer films going. Now that I've done that, I won't bump it again just for the sake of doing so. I'll let the thread die out on its own now.

I can promise you that this will happen; I watched it as an adult about three years ago, and there’s a lot of emotion in the film that you don’t appreciate as a kid. We see Rocky being humiliated when he’s found to be illiterate, Apollo ‘turning heel’ to get a rematch, Rocky facing financial problems as a prospective parent etc. The training montage and the finale are the best parts of the film, of course, but there’s far more to the film than you’d expect. Enjoy!

I love Rocky 4. It's one of my favorite movies, simply because it's so cheesy. Rocky 5 is fine. I'll watch it, but it's my least favorite in the series.

A few years ago in college, I wrote about the way the first two films were a snapshot of the timeframe they were in. Went well.

Nothing about Rocky V makes any sense.
Why was Paulie in charge of the family finances? Why was Rocky's criminal past suddenly an issue with advertisers when there is literally a montages of him doing commercials in Rocky III? Why was Rocky Jr. 10 years older? Just how long were they in Russia?

Just how long were they in Russia? Lol, you are absolutely right about the second two, but the first one was explained. While they were in Russia, their accountant convinced Paulie to forge Rocky's name on a form. Paulie thought he was helping out. Paulie wasn't actually in charge of the finances. They mentioned suing the accountant, but there was some kinda reason they didn't, like the accountant lost his money too or something like that.
