I only first saw these movies about ten years ago myself. I was in my 20s, and I've always felt the critical reputations of IV and V were swapped somehow.
IV is a movie from a different franchise. Different tone and vibe and so insanely of its time. And it has a goddamn robot in it. What the f*** is that? Remember when the Rocky movies were about a naive ruffian from the wrong side of the tracks who trained in a goddamn freezer? Like. How did we get here? Rocky V is not necessarily as good of a 'movie' as Rocky IV, but is a much better Rocky movie than Rocky IV.

I love the Creed movies but they kind of eliminate all the positive stuff that “Balboa” brought to end Rocky’s depression post losing Adrian.
1) Through the worst of times, Rocky and Paulie always had each other and it seemed they finally realized that was enough (“the beast is out Paulie”) then they killed him off in between the movies
2) Rocky and Robert patched things up only for Robert to be “uncomfortable” living in Philly. Once again, discouraged about living in a shadow. He bolts to Vancouver and the two once again become estranged until the end of Creed II
3) Marie and Steps, who seemed to give Rocky a renewed purpose on life disappear without a trace
Rocky obviously fell back into depression after initially not wanting to fight his cancer, which seemed very treatable from the onset

Rocky Balboa was a solid enough film but did anyone really care about Mason "The Line" Dixon? It's almost a storyline point that he's a current champion that no one respects and has no heat compared to the greats li. My dad told me a fun story about seeing Rocky when it first came out. He thought it was...okay. Not sure what my mom thought. But there was a black couple in the row in front of them that exited the theater like "That's the best picture of the year! It will win the Academy Award!" My dad was like "Surely there's something else better than that this year." But hey, they were right. I think what helped Rocky in 1976 at the Oscars is the other nominees were so ultra downbeat and dark. Network, Taxi Driver, and All the President's Men are to varying degrees cynical and upsetting films, whereas Rocky had certain darker elements but at the end was a feel good story. Of the main series from 1976-85 I have never been a big fan of 3. That's where things got semi cartoonish but I never felt Mr. T was that good of a bad guy. He was basically a cocky punk that got a cheap win over Rocky when Mickey died, then Rocky came back and utterly steamrolled him. What about the fifth film nominated that year? Bound for Glory.
