So would WWE. This is a nothing sandwich of an article That isn't true: WWE, as a corporation, has many times more resources than AEW has. Their numbers are public information, and by most accounts they could withstand shutting down for a considerable length of time. I very much dislike the idea that a billionaire, in this case Shad Khan, can't be asked to float money in an extraordinary circumstance like this beyond his initial investment point to get AEW off the ground. To me that's part and parcel of a lot of what's wrong with the modern economic landscape. However, the Khans also have multiple businesses to operate in the midst of everything right now, whereas WWE's focus is much more concentrated on pro wrestling; it does change the way each would approach this. I will give AEW credit for seemingly being much, much more proactive about testing and prevention than WWE has been, especially given that WWE's approach to prevention has seemingly been "none at all" beyond moving to the Performance Center. I understand that Tony Khan himself isn't likely to get more money from his father in this circumstance, and sadly I can fully buy TNT being willing to cut ties at the first sign of trouble, because that's how business is unfortunately conducted. But again, I just very much dislike that incredibly wealthy billionaires, who will still be massive multi-billionaires when then pandemic is over, can't just float some of their seemingly endless oceans of cash to make sure people don't lose their jobs AND can stay safe during a time like this. Meantime, yeah, go back to block tapings right now, especially given how some AEW wrestlers' connections to WWE talent they're close with is already leading to risks.

Yeah, the Khan's money is way more spread out than people are making it out to be.
They don't just have a billion laying around in a bank account to pull out for a rainy day. I could see this situation getting sketchy from a tv deal standpoint.

Yea, as I say with ROH they aren't the little engine that could They have financial backing as well as putting in a good performance for the network. They have goodwill to work with. If ROH can still survive without shows, they will as well

TNT does not own AEW, so them pulling the TV deal because of no original content means that AEW probably cannot survive without shows.

Assuming they pull the TV deal tho As said, AEW isn't a sunk cost. It was repeated at nauseam on here for the first few months that AEW has more then surpassed TNT expectations when it came to viewership. The last PPV they did it was reported it was their biggest one yet and this was in the middle of the pandemic If (Big If) AEW wanted to shut down for a month to get shit in order I would assume they'd have enough goodwill to do so Of course in saying that, if AEW is that worried then go back to taping 4-6 weeks in advance. It is the best case scenario

I could see them returning to Norcross GA for another giant block of taping They are already starting to tape in advance. They taped Fyter Night One today. Night 2 is gonna be taped the 2nd of July, presumably to get a timetable on if they need to change the card around for Moxley I would definitely do a block of tapings July 2nd and get everyone there you can, like tape for a few days and then call it for a month or so, 4-6 weeks, and and see where the world is. They aren't in the same situation as the Georgia taping, they have a ton of the roster now, they can do a lot of different matches and storylines to keep things fresh, it won't be like before, they can make this work, but they gotta be smart.

Again, the risk to AEW is them dying on the vine. WWE is established, and it feels like they could take a few months off from TV, change the formula up, and they could be fine. They have decades of programming to draw off of. AEW really can't do that. They're not even a year old, and yeah, they could run the show from the beginning if they want to, but the ratings would probably tank. The nostalgia for something that's less than a year old isn't something that could sustain the company. TNT simply isn't going to pay for a 2 hour prime time block for programming that's only gonna get 10,000 people a week watching (neither is USA for that matter, which is probably one reason why WWE is also in the same position). TNT is a golden opportunity for them, both because TNT means so much to Cody and Tony, and I don't think they want to blow that in their first year of existence. Like it's been mentioned, It doesn't matter how deep the Khans pockets are, if they're not on TV, they're DOA. It really sucks, but that's how it's gonna be. It sucks if they have the same demand on AEW that USA has been rumored to be giving WWE, and it should change, but it won't change.
I honestly give AEW a lot of leeway because I like them, I am a fan. I'm not gonna deny that. I definitely don't like that they've continued during the pandemic, especially in Florida of all places, but I think they're also taking good steps when they can with the testing and how they've been limiting the people at shows. When QT and Mox came into contact with people who tested positive for COVID-19, they let them take the right steps and told them not to come, and they worked around it. WWE, meanwhile, feels like they've been a bull in a china shop with all of this. Right from the jump, they let Miz come to the shows while he was sick. They paid $8 mil on a grift to the state to be categorized as an essential business, and then all of their chickens came home to roost this week with the outbreak happening at the tapings. If they were doing better to take care of the people, I'd feel better about them doing it. But we've seen time and time again, when they have the opportunity to do the right thing, they absolutely don't.

If they must continue to run shows, they need to tape as much as possible. If necessary, film Dark and Dynamite at the same time at different locations to maximize limited time. Or put Dark on hold. I'd say get 6 weeks of tapings out of the way and start taping again about 3 weeks in. Or get creative and have people do storyline segments from home like what Darby does or what Inner Circle did with Bubbly Bunch. You could get away with two episodes worth of matches in a longer span like this. It might lead to a lower quality product, but its safe and necessary to keep afloat.
Or, maybe another option could happen that would be more ideal, but I'd be breaking the rules discussing it.

Their numbers are public information, and by most accounts they could withstand shutting down for a considerable length of time. I think it is true, given that the premise of Alvarez's point is that AEW couldn't survive if they shut down for a few months and TNT refused to pay them. If Fox/USA refused to pay the WWE it would be financially catastrophic for them too. Not to mention what that - and announcing that they wouldn't be running any shows until basically there's a vaccine - would do to the share price. I don't know if we have any details on what AEW's deal with TNT is, but the Khan's would certainly have a better chance at bridging that gap than Vince would for the WWE's deals. Wasn't it the case that they were originally just going to be covering production costs? FWIW, and I said this in another thread, working and being tested regularly is arguably safer for talent - financially, mentally and in terms of preventing them getting/transmitting the virus - than shutting down would be.

In whatever case, TNT does seem to have a lot of good will towards AEW and wouldn't treat them shabbily for the sake of doing it, but I'd rather it not come to finding out just how far that good will extends.

Eh, comparing AEW to ROH is a weird one since Sinclair only brought ROH for the content and not for the wrestling.
Like, if Sinclair wanted to delve into ROH's archive for shows and just have roster members pick favourite matches like what NXT UK is doing with people, they can do that since that's the reason they brought them.
TNT doesn't own AEW nor is AEW publically traded so it feels like an apples and oranges thing.

That's actually what Sinclair did for a few weeks: they'd have a wrestler interviewed and then have them talk about 2-3 major matches they've had in the promotion, and then air them.

People are not gonna agree with me but as long as AEW continues to take precautions they should be okay. If anything I would probably suggest them looking into relocating and doing block tapings again due to spikes but as long as they don't do anything like hide that someine tested positive and let shows continue? They should be okay I know it was easier for both companies to run Florida because (at the time) it was one of the few places they were actually allowed to, and because AEW had access to Daily's Place, while WWE had the Performance Center, which allowed them to set up a base, but things have changed. With more states opening up, while Florida is going through a hot mess now, it's probably wise for both of them to try and find somewhere else to go, or to try and film a month's worth of shows, let everyone go home, and hope things change down there. Other states are asking people coming out of Florida to quarantine right now. It's really unfair to the talent at this point to keep bringing them back every week.

I'd imagine TNT would have zero issues. Once the NBA starts, it's likely Dynamite will get bumped temporarily anyway if the plan is indeed to air all the games on ESPN/ABC/TNT. Do a couple loaded days of tapings, let everyone go home, and hope things ease up a bit down in Florida once you need more shows.

I think they need to try to tape 4-6 weeks worth of TV over the course of a week-long taping session and focus on Dynamite. I love AEW Dark, but they're not getting rights fees for it anywhere. Make Dark a 30-minute recap show with 1 fresh match and 1-2 fresh promos. It still gives them a bit of room to try things while making Dark solid promotional programming for Dynamite (and a way to follow storylines for international fans if someone doesn't have Dynamite airing in their area).

Yeah they seemingly waste a lot of time on Dark matches for these tapings. You can tape a month or two’s worth of shows over a few days’ time and send everyone home.
