I wouldn't put WWE past most rotten things but my bull shit radar is flashing hard on this one.

WWE never really wanted to discuss Cody and Brandi being married and that was just a couple of years ago. The only reference at all to it was when Cody gave his speech after the Dusty tourney on NXT and she was in the ring, and even then there was no explanation given as to why she was there. In fact up until the recent Lana/Lashley stuff I can only recall one other interracial segment on WWE TV (as in black/white) and that was the Desperate Housewives/Terrell Owens spoof they did in 2004 with Trish Stratus and Shelton Benjamin. And remember Vince's line about that. Telling Shelton that he is black. This is probably true.

Yeah, sorry, not feeling this one. I have no problem with the idea of them suggesting that they wanted new Divas to be at least publicly single, but even if we are talking about the best part of twenty years ago I really can't see them saying 'ditch the black guy or no job'.
The other scenario is that she tried to get Wagner Brown a job with her and they weren't interested and it was a 'we both come or no deal' situation so they just hired some other girls instead.

That was supposed to be a major reason behind the diva searches if rumors at the time were true. Hire a bunch of hot women to keep the boys away from the rats. Those were rumors at the time. They wanted to hire a bunch of hot women using the diva searches so that all the new young, often unmarried, wrestlers would have attractive women to hook up with. This would keep them away from the rats and any unpleasantness could be kept in house.

Oh, I find that entirely plausible, I'm just struggling to find ways to adequately express my disgust (that it was rumored, possibly true, but either way entirely in keeping with what we've come to expect). Honestly beyond posting Flair showing Cardassian-level neck tendons, I'm also trying to respond by shifting officialfan WWE below other officialfan sections in my bookmark list while I try to change my reading habits.

I mean, the storyline was more about Henry chasing Chyna, who obviously wasn't interested, to the point where a big dollop of transphobia was involved so I wouldn't even say that's a remotely good example.

And also a heapin' helpin' of incest. I'm not going to research it, but if memory serves, I believe Mr. Henry's discussion with his psychologist/sex therapist involved, "...and when was the last time you had sex with your sister?" "Last week!" I believe it was rumored that this storyline was their attempt to get The World's Strongest Man to quit so they wouldn't have to keep paying him for The World's Longest Contract Not Involving Bret Hart.

"Sexual Chocolate" Mark Henry dated a lot of white women. Even produced a Hand with southern belle Mae Young. We're really going to use grossout comedy as proof that they were pro-interacial relationships?

I don't think there's been a worse scenario outside of fan fiction when you can say "Oh yeah, I forgot about the incest".

I mean, I'm not going to mention the previous lines in that Henry / Therapist skit -- because while I know intellectually it's just Vince processing on national television and it feels kind of ableist to really take Vince to task on this issue because of his (apparent, based on behavior) refusal to properly deal with his issues -- but what I quoted is the least-negative half of that skit. And now, to rapidly turn the page, here's a funny picture of Sting:

On the one hand it's very likely we're getting a skewed version of what actually happened/was said. On the other WWE doesn't really deserve the benefit of the doubt.

PMS with Meat, Eddie and Chyna, Mark Henry and Mae Young, Sable and Marc Mero.. While the Johnny B. Badd character is analogous to Little Richard, Mero himself isn’t black. I’m pretty sure he wasn’t presented as such when he was in WWE either.

I'd also like to point out that WWE can't possibly be anti-union as Vince himself was once part of the Union.

Regarding U.S. public perception of interracial relationships in the late 1990's/early 2000's, I think that, while there were definitely open dissenters, it was an issue many people didn't vocally take a stance on until it happened within their own social circle, and the results were often less than pleasant. I for sure remember getting a ton of grief and self-hating allegations for dating a "white"* guy in the closing moments of the 90's, even earning myself some lovely vulgar graffiti on the side of my house. Then, in '02, the situation reversed when I started dating a black guy, and both sets of our parents heavily disapproved *sigh*.
*Not that it should matter, but he was actually white-passing

Weren’t they already promoting an interracial relationship by then with Eddie and Chyna? Even before that... Mark Henry and Mae Young.

Not that I'm surprised, but I'm just amazed by the idea of, "Oh, okay, we'll just have all our employees f***ing each other and that'll keep away any unpleasant drama!"
