The Avalanche are just too freaking good.
Although if I remember, I did call this team being a threat two years ago after San Jose barely got by them in the Conference Semis.

Hope Jake Evans is ok. That was violent. That was the worst hit I've seen in quite a while. Scheifele has never seemed like a dirty player to me, but that was as predatory as it gets. You don't have the time to make that play without the player scoring, so it just seemed like a frustration hit. Really scary how long he stayed down. Hope he's okay.

Buffalo with the draft lottery win.
According to Elliotte Friedman just two weeks ago, Anaheim wants to make a big deal and is interested in Eichel. Friedman also said this week that the cap will likely be flat for another 4-5 years. Ouch. Anaheim has Getzlaf (at his current deal anyways) and Backes off the books now, saving over $12 million.
Buffalo is likely to take Owen Power first overall. Playing armchair GM, I would go to Anaheim and ask for the #3 pick and Jamie Drysdale for Eichel. It might not be the quantity they want, but it would be the quality. Anaheim also wouldn't have to give up Zegras. It would finally get Eichel off their plate (I have a friend that works for Ottawa. He said it's no secret that Eichel has one of the worst reputations in the league and it could be addition by subtraction at this point) and his $10 million cap hit.
They could have a future top 4D of Dahlin, Power, Drysdale, and if they took another D with the third pick (say Brandt Clark, a high-end RD prospect) that would be a potential dominate D corps. They also have a good chance at a top three pick next year. Wright, Lambert, and Savoie (also McGorarty, hell the top 6) are projected to all be superstars so they can get their forward then. There's also some potential for Bedard, Michkov, and Fantilli the year after.
Reinhart and Ristolainen also said they want to be traded so that'd be more cap space and picks. I know it's been said before, but if Buffalo plays it's cards right, they could have serious potential. Tough job for a rookie GM with no help. I hope for their fans that they can finally turn things around.

But there's a much bigger gap between a top 3 pick last year and this year. If I'm Buffalo, I ask for more than Drysdale and #3 in a weaker, and certainly more unknown draft class given how little we saw of these guys the last year. Having said that, I'd imagine they wouldn't take a D at 3. Maybe Beniers is still there, maybe reach for Eklund, or much more palatable, move down. At that point you'd have Dahlin and Power and Drysdale in addition to Ryan Johnson who was a recent 1st for them who still has time to grow. It would be hard for them to move Eichel and lose Hall and just leave Cozens and Jack Quinn, who I think was a reach last year, and surround them with only defensemen. Buffalo has had a real issue developing forwards, and after the flops of Skinner and Hall in addition to just being a really unattractive destination, would result in no forwards of note signing there. So they'd have to draft them or trade one of those D men for one anyway.

So they'd have to draft them or trade one of those D men for one anyway. Yeah, last year's draft was awesome and it is a weaker draft this year. And you're right, they will ask for more than what I said. We'll never know but I would love to hear the offers they get for Eichel. I wonder how many teams are hesitant to give much up because of the injury, cap hit, and rumours of him not being well liked in the room. If an Anaheim deal can get done and Buffalo's approach is best player available, imo I think that would be Clark at #3 behind Beniers. He and/or Drysdale would suit their RD needs. It'll be interesting to see Adams' approach because we don't know which way he's going to try to build the team. If they are able to get Drysdale/#3 (+), they could set up their top 4D for the next ten years with the top 4 defensive stud prospects in the last couple years. Realistically it won't happen but I'm a former defenceman so I have a soft spot for them lol. I'm drooling at the prospect of it potentially happening. Would be really fun to watch. Again, armchair GM, if it was me in his shoes I would try to build the D core/foundation on the absolute stud prospects right now, this year in particular because there isn't the absolute game-breaking offensive talent available in this draft that will be there the next two drafts. I can't see them finishing outside of the bottom three next year as well, so that would set them up nicely to land their 1C offensive stud/pointer getter in 2022. I don't know if they take Beniers with Cozens there, based on what's coming up these next two drafts. There's going to be 1C centers available in the top 5 picks in both these years with higher ceilings than Beniers. That's not a knock on him. But yeah, if they have a stud D already picked with Power, I agree that targeting a forward could be the right/sensible approach. I love Beniers and think he has high upside, I view him more in the O'Reilly/Toews mold where their numbers don't pop out like McDavid/Matthews. If they take the approach that they wanted a complete center with a 200 foot game, you can't go wrong with Beniers. They do have a glaring need for future wingers. I agree that Eklund could be suitable there, same with Kent Johnson if they project him to be a winger or Dylan Guenther. Either way, whatever way they decide to go I really hope they can right the ship. Do you see the Blues making any moves? PS - I wrote this in a rush. If it doesn't make sense and I repeated myself, I didn't proof read it haha. I know it might be all over the place.

If it doesn't make sense and I repeated myself, I didn't proof read it haha. I know it might be all over the place. If they're that good, it would be very hard to pay all 4 of them for the entirety of that time period. You only have what, 6 or 7 years of guaranteed control before a player can hit the open market? And you also run into the issue of a guy being good enough to want to be a 1st pairing player, meanwhile being stuck behind Dahlin and Power. I think it ends up like the Seth Jones deal. It would be an interesting build, but I think ultimately would suffer from the same problem that Toronto is running into. When you build around one portion of the lineup being the only focus, you're gonna need a lot of breaks elsewhere to be a balanced team. Ideally, the ping pong balls go their way in future drafts who will have those high-end forwards, but it's hard to build a team expecting those guys. There's a good chance it happens, but you can't bank on it. The Blues probably look to deal Vince Dunn because Armstrong has made it pretty public that he's planning to protect Krug with Parayko and Faulk. I think that's a giant mistake, as Krug wasn't very good this year and is signed til he's 36. But Dunn is the most valuable guy to not be protected, so they'll probably look to move him. They may move on from Jaden Schwartz as well this off-season, who would then become a big glue guy addition for teams with cap space.

And now for a much-deserved blasting (LANGUAGE WARNING): This was an embarrassment on so many levels. Not only did the Leafs choke big time against their biggest rival in the Montreal Canadiens, but this was also against a team where they should've won, hands down. This is a series that had no business going to 7 games, let alone Montreal winning it. That's not even considering that Montreal wouldn't be a playoff team under normal circumstances. All this talk about the Leafs being the better team....you can take it, and you can flush it. Everything that the Leafs did to address the team and what they achieved throughout the regular season....it means nothing. The entire f***ing season, wasted. To make the most of it, we've made deadline acquisitions, and because of those acquisitions, we've put ourselves in a spot where we don't really have any draft picks to show for it. This was one of the most pathetic displays I have ever witnessed from this team, and the players who didn't show up for this series should be ashamed of themselves. Absolutely disgraceful. So now the question: Where do the Leafs go from here? Honestly, I don't think there's anywhere else for this current core to go. The Leafs have now concluded what is the 5th season with their current core of players, and still don't have a single playoff series win to show for it. Yes, some can say that the playoffs are random and chaotic, but ultimately, they are how we measure what matters in this sport, and the bottom line is, this group has failed miserably time and time again. If the goal is to win in the playoffs, and it obviously is, you simply cannot have an infinite tolerance for playoff losses no matter how good the team looks on paper and performs in the regular season. You just can't. At this point, I believe it's time for a major shakeup. Matthews and Nylander the only true untouchables. Don't get me wrong, the first couple of years were exciting, and it lead to some of the best moments the Leafs have seen in God knows how long. Things were seemingly looking on the up-and-up as the Leafs worked to build a promising new core of players. But the reality is, the Leafs paid through the nose in doing so, and now find themselves tight against the cap with very little wiggle room. We've invested so much into this team, but no matter what moves were made to accomodate this team, the Leafs have never seen a return on their investments when it mattered most. We've spent so much time in trying to find out what is wrong with this team and how we can improve upon it. However, I don’t think Toronto can afford to spend any longer finding out, especially not after how they blew this series against Montreal. I don't know how you don't shake up the roster after this. Man, I just feel so bad for the players who showed up in this series. Nylander, Kerfoot, Campbell, Spezza, Galchenyuk. They all looked great in the series. They deserve better than to have the season end on such a sour note. Campbell especially. He played lights out the entire series and even went as far as to claim responsibility when it wasn't entirely his fault. What a class act.

This Islanders I don't know what to make of it. On one hand for the 3rd period, he played great now, but he gave up a cheep OT goal. One thing to give up the goal, can't be on something like that. Too easy.

Now I'm even more pissed about the Leafs blowing that series. This could've been our ticket to the conference finals.

Looks like Montreal's got this game in the bag. I know there's 2 periods left to go, but I don't like Winnipeg's chances.

It's not enough for the Leafs to blow a 3-1 series lead to Montreal, but we just had to take yet another trip to **** Kick City. Brutal.
