Fightful confirmed that WWE dropped their attempt to trademark "Cody Rhodes" so that should pave the way for Cody to get it.

Good.
I could always understand why WWE trademarked event names or match types or whatever because there was going to be a possible use for it even though a) it’s super shady and b) there was negative zero possibility of a WWE New Blood Rising show.
The f*** were they going to do with the Cody Rhodes trademark? If they gave it to another guy, he’s dead in the water, they give it to a jobber, they look petty and it only just seemed like a giant legal headache for no return.

Oh, it wasn’t, which made it seem more like a bad decision since even if they won, it eventually would have lapsed anyway on an appeal.

I said it before that once Cody gets the Rhodes name back that AEW should repay the WWE by giving somebody the name Aurora Rose and then trademark it

She's also just a kid and has nothing to do with it. Why try and turn her into a punchline?

Eh, I think people forget it isnt actually his name, but given how famous Dusty is and that everyone knows who Cody is, they aren't protecting anything doing it.
Obviously it's funnier to believe they were doing this on purpose, but there is always the chance this was just lawyers and that no one actually gives a shit at all and they've abandoned it just because of an arbitrary time scale or realisation it's spending on something they dont need anymore.
I'd be more inclined to think that once you dont work for him anymore, Vince gives no shits about you and forgets you even exist and this was always just the lawyers, than believe he's sat cackling over holding your name up.

It is actually his name... at least in the Legal sense. He changed it when he was 18. honestly, they probably couldn't have stopped him from using it... because all he'd have to do is show the name change records that occurred BEFORE he went to the WWE and the court would rule in his favor. But to get to that point would be a lot of time and money.

The cost of maintaining and defending the hundreds of registrations for trademarks that WWE has to keep going is huge; there would naturally be points where they re-evaluate/purge that list and only pursue the renewal of ones they want to keep on hand. In the past proceedings, WWE had altered their claim for the renewal on this trademark, which speaks not only to their pursuit of a renewal up until recently, but that people who made decisions had said "We should change the angle of what we're after". The idea it took four and a half years for the lawyers still trying to get that name in to find out he was no longer in the company seems kind of ridiculous.

When I in charge of a large company's IP portfolio, they LOVED when I wasted their time and money for 4 and a half years. That's completely more believable then a company that has decades of being petty and trying to hurt competitors. It's not like they named a man servant after Cody's dad or anything.

It's why Jeff Jarrett could be Jeff Jarrett when he returned to WWE, but Impact seemingly owns the trademark "Jeff Jarrett" so they can't have merch for him unless they have a deal with Impact.

I dunno, Vince and Dusty have their past as conpeting promoters/grudge with the pola dots, some of which you can be sure passed down to loyalist son Cody
