Naturally, most of the top replies are people tying themselves in knots insisting that this is somehow a disappointing number. Beats calling the numbers fake, I suppose.

I saw it yesterday and it was fine enough. A bit by-the-numbers, but Bailey had a nice emotive performance and McCartney was a pretty charismatic Ursula.
It’s way better than whatever the heck Jon Favreau was trying to do with Lion King. Partly because the uncanny valley looking CGI animals aren’t taking up as much screen time (even though I liked Awkafina’s Scuttle from a voice acting perspective).

Beats calling the numbers fake, I suppose. Given that doing so requires ignoring the facts in front of their eyes, it amounts to the same thing. The movie has opened with about as good a domestic take as Disney were hoping for. Internationally it seems a bit more borderline, as around $65 million is probably $20 million less than Disney would have liked, given Across the Spider-Verse releases next week and will definitely take a huge bite out of LM's business. Still, it's looking like it'll be another solid hit for the live action remakes, which means there won't be any shortage of them going forward.

As soon as this was announced I knew I would be "forced" to see it.
I get that the animated Little Mermaid is her favorite film.It isn't bad, just not a movie I would have ever seen more than 3 or 4 times tops.
This live action remake was better than I expected. Was expecting it to be a movie where I looked at my clock often wondering how often i have left before it is over. Now yea I looked at my phone 2 times to see how much time was left.
She loved it. I know whenever it hits 4k I will see this again.
Hey Disney how about maybe making something new? My childhood yall were either re-re-re-releasing old animated films or ripping off books and fairytales for animated films. Also when you do a live action Lilo and Stitch expect me to be protesting it. No need to remake the only perfect film yall have made.

Casting for the live action Lilo and Stitch for D+ has been all over considering there has been controversy over the Nani and David castings. Chris Sanders is back as Stitch along with Billy Magnussen as Pleakley and Zack Galifianakis as Jumba.

The numbers internationally are not good, comparative to budget. Domestic will need to carry.
Depends how front-loaded this may be and how it holds up going into June.

Spider Man's out this week so that's gonna take a bite out of its box office.

Disney is in a rut. Their live action remakes have been middling at best with a few exceptions and their only other idea is unwanted Toy Story and Frozen sequels.

Spider Man's out this week so that's gonna take a bite out of its box office. And in the following two weeks Transformers and The Flash drop into cinemas too. Unless Little Mermaid has ridiculous staying power, it is going to have its number of screenings drastically cut down by the middle of June.

Movie looks set to be a massive hit so can't wait for the, "Go woke, go broke," crowd to just conveniently forget this movie ever existed despite spending years bitching about it. Those same people online are still questioning the validity of those box office numbers.

I question it being a massive hit yet relative to what it is, the budget spent and it being one of the remaining bullets in the Disney Renaissance Remake chamber. It still needs that strong domestic hold.
If people are saying the published numbers are "fake" - that's just being incredulous for the sake of that alone.

What really hurt the movie internationally is that the Chinese box office numbers were dreadful.

What really hurt the movie internationally is that the Chinese box office numbers were dreadful. Disney can't be relying on China anymore to boost the box office.

When you have a budget as big as TLM did, you need a strong international number because the domestic market just can't support something that big unless it's a massive hit. And TLM did good here, but not good enough to compensate for it bombing in the largest movie market in the world.
Like China is the biggest reason why Avatar 2 went from "probably underwhelming" to "third highest grossing movie of all time."
