They are struggling to effectively utilize the IP they already have, and now they want to bring Paramount under their banner as well?
Maybe they can cancel all the Star Trek shows and replace them with a Star Trek themed reality show, yeah?
f***ing shame. Really enjoyed The Gold, The Offer, Players, Tulsa King, first season of Mayor Of Kingstown, and having access to all the original MTV content and the new Beavis And Butthead movie.
Really don't feel like WB having their hands on those things right now.

Hopefully whoever heads Paramount makes the decisions, then. I am looking above at the early talk of WBD wanting to sell themselves to Universal.

We’re doing that thing again when we just assume things are going to be bad with no actual real evidence and honestly, never helps in any kind of discussion with these things.

I mean, I'm just worried because yet another group of media entities are merging. Getting to that Demolition Man world where all restaurants are Taco Bell and I don't want all restaurants to be Taco Bell damnit, I want 54th Street or Buffalo Wild Wings sometimes damnit!....I'm not really sure where I was going at this point, I'm ordering dinner now.

I mean, I'm just worried because yet another group of media entities are merging. But, and I want to stress this as much as possible, nothing has happened yet. These are two dudes chatting who happen to run major companies. It could happen, it could not but it’d be a different story if any of this was being pitched to shareholders or talked about in boards but as of right now, nothing’s happened. If a few months in, any of the above does happen and we get an announcement around March or something then hey, we can have an entirely different conversation.

Not chanting the sky is falling yet. I just am annoyed to hear any sort of rumor about this kind of stuff. Media mergers suck ass imo and REALLY hope nothing comes from this. I'm kinda half way serious about the Demolition Man thing.

Also, thinking about this more…what does Paramount get out of this? They seem to be one of the few conglomerates doing well right now, is there a reason they’d be interested in caring hundreds of millions in debt and companies that have been mistreated for years by people who misunderstand their entire ethos? And that’s before they likely have to sell half of them to potentially comply with any government rulings for many global governments. Paramount is struggling under its own mountain of debt, although not to the extent of WBD ($15 billion compared to WBD's $45 billion). Paramount Plus is operating at a huge annual loss, and is losing ground on Netflix, Disney+, and Max (which is itself a distant third). The belief seems to be that one big conglomerate will be able to better handle the combined debt than either one can handle their own individually, and that a combined streaming service will be more competitive against Netflix and Disney. Safe to say, I want Zaslav and his cronies nowhere near Star Trek.

I think one of the things that’ll be ongoing with this stuff is that literally all the big companies, not sure about NBC Universal but they were rumored to be interested in buying WBD outright rather than merging, have big debts. The only reason Disney isn’t being talked about how WBD is right now is because they aren’t crashing their ship as much (even though they absolutely are in different, more subtle ways) so all these companies are talking about it to help be competitive All of this, again, does not rule out that this could just be yet another Apple/Disney thing where it comes up every so often and the window for it to happen closes and some other deal comes along that both sounds better and is still terrible.

Even if WBD and Paramount did try merging it would take years for that to get off the ground and there's a very real chance it wouldn't be permitted. Just look at how long it took and how much opposition there was for the Microsoft / Activision deal and that wasn't anywhere near as impactful of a merger in terms of reducing the overall media landscape.

If it helps, one of the follow up stories has lead to Paramount and WBD declining to comment which could mean nothing but considering where both are now, it sort of feels against their interest to not say something to get shareholders drooling.

Merging the streaming companies makes sense, but I'm Canadian so Max isn't even a thing here. So a streaming merger likely wouldn't effect me, unless it lead to all of the HBO and Max programming migrating from Crave to Paramount. And I subscribe to both anyways. I don't like the idea of merging the whole companies tho. Guess we'll see how this goes

If you want to know what the stock market thought of the rumors, both WBD and Paramount shares are down 4%.
Basically the equivalent of them going “Nah, we’re good”.

Well ESPN Plus is kind of a dud, but between Fox sports and WBD that will add content.... mostly soccer, college football, and potentially wrestling but still content

Getting closer and closer to the streaming sites just ending up right back at cable.
Time is a flat circle... unless you look at it from the side, then it is a downward spiral.

Getting closer and closer to the streaming sites just ending up right back at cable. Corporations are finally coming to the realisation that streaming is a money pit that only has a chance of actually being profitable if there's only couple of players in the game.
