So. Donnarumma gets player of the tournament. He was neither the best Italian (Chiesa, Spinazzola) nor the best Keeper (Sommer, Schmeichel).

Sadly, and depressingly predictably, the fact that the three players to miss penatlies are all black has not lost been on a certain selection of "fans" who have taken to social media. I’m certain that this type of lowlife only follows football to issue racial abuse at black and minority players. I imagine that they’re not hurling abuse at Pickford for missing some saves, right? Shameful, and it speaks more about them as people far more than it does the footballers.

Team of the Tournament then for me anyway:
Schmeichel Spinnazola Chiellini Bonucci Shaw Rice Pedri Barella Schick Sterling Chiesa
Subs:
Donnarumma Ronaldo Insigne Damsgaard Jorginho Kane (eventually) Kjaer Christensen Forsberg Dumfries Sommer
I’m still very gutted for Saka for missing that last penalty and I’m sure il get stick since he was the only Arsenal player in the squad but at least he had the balls to step up unlike Grealish, Sterling or Phillips.
Man I’m ready for the World Cup right now so England can get right back at it but I think the players might need some rest first!

I wasn’t far off. Just under 31million was the peak viewing figure for the final. 25 million of those were on the BBC.

Nothing's come out, but I think Southgate just doesn't trust him, might be due to off the pitch stuff, he's not always kept out of trouble, but it took so long for him to even get a call up, let alone playing time.

Rashford took too long to take his pen. Overthought it. I could have made a cup of tea during his run up. I knew he was going to miss as soon as the whistle for him to go blew. He took forever to start and then when he did, he looked completely clueless. It was as if he forgot what he was doing. I'm biased because I'm an Everton fan, but I'm completely gutted for Jordan Pickford. I honestly thought after he stopped Jorginho, they were going to win. He's been fantastic in this tournament. He might not have been the best goalkeeper, but he definitely played well. I feel horrible for Saka. No way should he have been in that spot. Congrats to Italy. They're retooling after missing the World Cup has been amazing. Hopefully the US was paying attention. Granted, one's a world power and the other has been expected to take the next step for a generation.... but still.

I was listening and not watching live but have watched it back and I’d agree he didn’t look confident. I wish more players would do something like Harry maguire and just put their foot through it. When I first started watching football, there none of that carry on around penalties. It was come up and hit it and if it went in, it went in. I don’t think the US will ever get to the level they want to, because while the US has its own homegrown sports which they have a tried and tested system for and they work, football(non American football) is not compatible with the American system. Also, my impression is that in America it’s a game of money which again is another difference to Europe.

Southgate made some odd line up decisions the whole tournament. Now cannot criticize him too much since he got to the finals but it was rather odd that some of the talent England had got nothing more than a couple short cameos... you'll also have those that say Englandalso got an insanely easy path to the finals but you can only best who are in front of you. Still a great tournament. I think you could see with a few teams that were either ready to move on from their coach (looking right at Germany) players (too many to count) and just having guys out of form. But a lot of great stories that came out

I think Southgate got everything just about right... except the final. Seen a lot of typical English grousing today wanting him fired and replaced with a "proper" manager, but we've had plenty of "proper managers" in the past and where did that get us? I do think we need a few tweaks. Despite how much Southgate likes him, I don't think Mason Mount has ever justified his guaranteed place in the team, and Italy exposed our lack of top class quality in the centre midfield, though Bellingham looks like he'll be a fantastic player in a few years.

Also, my impression is that in America it’s a game of money which again is another difference to Europe. I just want the US to be competitive. I know they are never going to be a power because, like you said, the system is different and is not conducive to being elite in the world game. I will say..... I think with the NIL changes coming to the NCAA here in the States, we are going to see a change in college sports. I think eventually, probably not in my lifetime (I'm 43), we are going to see sports become more like the European model. I think there are going to be more and more Academies, maybe through professional sports teams... not sure, come up that will basically become baseball, American Football, basketball, maybe Association Football that the kids will be funneled (maybe not the right word) to and the American colleges will maybe move away from the athletics. Like I said, not anytime soon, but I think this fight for the "student athletes" to get name and likeness rights is just the beginning. I could be wrong, but that's my opinion. I personally like the European model of sport. I don't fully have all the knowledge, but it seems like (talking specifically with Association Football), they pick up kids really early and get them into their system. I assume it includes some sort of basic education along with, obviously, Football. I think the American colleges and universities should be for academics and not athletics. This is coming from a diehard sports fan. I don't know.... I'm getting way off-topic here. I apologize.

I’ve always thought Grealish was massively overrated by pundits and fans. He’s a good player but not the 2nd coming of Gazza or worthy of a guaranteed starting place. But people just won’t stop talking about how amazing he supposedly is. I personally think Sancho should have started more but Gareth sure does have a lot of attacking players to choose from.
I’m biased towards Saka because I’m an Arsenal fan but can understand why people would question why he was playing more. I think his versatility was probably what Southgate liked. It’s certainly a help for Arsenal.

England will never win anything unless they learn possession football. They couldn't get the ball off Italy and when they had possession, they lost it immediately.

LOL That's been the English way of football forever. It's much better than it was but, it's still only a level above the Sam Allardyce "Hoof it up the pitch and pray one of the strikers gets it" strategy.

We hit the alcohol poisoning round when he was injured for a third of the season and still got mentioned all the time.

I love the stuff doing the rounds on social media about how Chiellini got booked for pulling s shirt and if that is what a winner looks like, they’d rather lose. Bollocks. I don’t know any England fans who wouldn’t take having a player booked for a cynical foul if it meant winning a tournament.

They don't think while on the pitch.
