His run with Hogan doesn’t get talked about enough. Probably one of the best heel turns and storylines they ever did. A great slow burn where Orndorff was getting needled by the heels and he thought he was right in turning on Hogan because he didn’t answer his phone call. It wasn’t just a turn to do a turn. The motivations were perfect. And it paid off too. Meltzer mentioned earlier today the only Hogan rival comparable as far as house show gates was Savage, which was arguably one of the best storylines in company history critically and commercially.

Anytime someone passes away from a decline like this, I like to remember them as they were in better health.
To that extent, I'll always chuckle at the story of Orndorff in flip-flops beating the hell out of Vader. That's how you know someone's a badass.
RIP to a legend and a badass.

It looks like his son Travis just got married this past June, he goes from one of the happiest days of his life to one of the saddest within a month. Hopefully he is staying strong.

In 2000 or 01 my brother, a friend and I went to a wrestling show at Melbourne’s Rod Laver arena. It was apart of that Rodman down under thing.
Anyway the matches were mostly all garbage. With all due respect to the the performers .. it looked like they went out there did the bare minimum and got out of there.
But the only match I could say got a positive star rating was the undercard bout between Mr Wonderful and the One Man Gang. A match that was almost worth the price of admission..
RIP

The motivations were perfect. It was really well done and not only that, but I felt like Ordorff gave Hogan his best matches and was his best opponent. The cage match on SNME was really well done and even though it ended up screwy, I like the Big Event match as well. He was a great worker and an underated heel that I doubt will get quite the dues he deserved. In a way, now he is at peace. It's see sad to see him go, but it was almost sadder to see him in the condition he was in at the end.

Something else about Orndorff: he had such an obnoxious theme. That’s a lost art for heels today. And did that TWICE. The WCW theme I assume you're referencing, though that came at the tail end of his stay there and indeed career. Then there was him trolling WWF fans by using Real American.

So between Piper, Snukka, Ali, Patterson, and now Orndorf that's more than half the people from the WM1 main event who are no longer with us. (Or am I forgetting anyone important?) Liberace was guest timekeeper. Think Billy Martin appeared too. And this makes the second Hogan tag team main event where the faces are still with us when all the heels aren't (the other is Savage and Zeus)

Tony Schiavone was upset about it and mentioned it on his most recent "What Happened When" podcast, he was bothered by it and said he did not want his kids doing something like that.

Mr. Wonderful was my first favorite wrestler. I was about 7 years old and totally thought he got robbed in that SNME cage match. As a kid, I also legit believed that Hogan stole 'Real American' from Orndorff.
Almost 35 years later, I still think Orndorff was an elite talent. He was one of those guys, like Macho Man, who always upped the intensity in any match. He could be a beloved babyface and a hated heel, practically without changing anything, like a proto Stone Cold.
I heard Orndorff shoot once that his tenure in WCW was just about the paycheck, but you'd never know it by how he went out and performed. I always wondered what might have been had they introduced Paul as the 4th Horseman instead of Roma, or brought them both in as Pretty Wonderful.
RIP to one of my all time favorites.

Meltzer said Hogan/Orndorff had the most successful house show run in wrestling history which says a lot.

I'm really only familiar with Orndorff from his brief late 90s WCW run. I've never really gone back and watched any of his stuff with Hogan, or any other notable things he did. I probably should. His WCW theme was one of the best, though. Just completely ridiculous.
Sad news. RIP, Paul.

Off the top of my head, we still got Brooklyn Brawler, Terry Taylor, and (briefly) Sivi Afi. Rest in power to an unsung legend of the sport The Brain Busters too. Still, it's like, the 80s seem like only yesterday*, why's everyone gone now? * - Well 41 years ago, tops. Which answers my own question. Can't believe I forgot the Brain Busters. Also remembered that Patera is still alive too. Managed him in AWA and he was one of the first guys he managed in WWF along with Studd before he had to go jail.
