EXCLUSIVE: UK broadcasting union Bectu has urged members to “do nothing to undermine the IATSE action” and say no if offered the work of a striking IATSE member.

In an email sent by Bectu head Philippa Childs to thousands of UK behind-the-camera workers on Friday, seen by Deadline, the union boss said Bectu is “fully behind the strike.”

She asked all members to turn down work if offered to replace a striking IATSE member and instead told them to contact the union.

Variety revealed earlier today that IATSE members working in the UK on U.S. film projects also are preparing to strike from Monday if the crunch weekend talks between IATSE and the AMPTP end in stalemate.

Stupid they had to stretch this out so long and piss everyone off... but Im really glad the Union's getting most of what it asked for in the end that it's good enough for an agreement.

I didn't want to see a ton of media lost or die due to an extreme delay

Many members of IATSE say they will vote against ratifying a new contract with the major studios because it does not do enough to address working conditions on set.

The deal, announced Saturday afternoon, averts a strike that would have shut down film and TV production nationwide starting on Monday morning. But in interviews and online chatter, many workers have expressed frustration with the terms and said they expect it will be rejected.

“Basically nothing has changed,” said Ernesto Lomeli, a director of photography based in Los Angeles. “I have not heard a single person saying they will vote yes.”

A ratification vote will likely not be held for several weeks, as lawyers will have to translate the deal points into contract language. In the meantime, work will proceed as normal on film and TV sets.
