So it’s still there, still affecting the algorithm, you just can’t see how many of them there are?
What problem does this solve?

I'm just concerned. First it starts with the Dislikes. Then the comment section will soon be taken away too. Mark my words. You were probably one of the people upset when IMDB got rid of their cesspool of a comment section.

The only one here being toxic is the one who is continuing to antagonize someone who just wants to drop out of this conversation. EDIT: I said I was bowing out. Please respect my wishes and leave me out of this.

I'm not saying OMG CENSORSHIP,but people should really see how this is being made to help big corporations keep clean face.
The biggest issue with the dislike is how the algorithm works, and this doesnt solve anything of it.

If you think it’s about some person doing makeup reviews or some shit, you’re insane.

Nobody thinks that the primary motivator wasn't to protect big accounts and corporations, but if you think that smaller accounts won't benefit just as much, if not more, you're just being obtuse. Again, big accounts and corporations will trend on social media outside YouTube's boundaries if they put out something shitty, and that has a bigger effect than any number of dislikes on a videos. Some poor bastard who found themselves targeted by the wrong reactionary group only has the algorithm to worry about, and if - as both YouTube and a number of creators who've trialled hiding dislikes claim - it is proving to be a deterrent against the kinds of weaponised attacks committed by trolls then I don't see any real problem.

It won’t because the algorithm still functions outside of the ability to see the dislikes. You can still do it.

It won’t because the algorithm still functions outside of the ability to see the dislikes. You can still do it. And based on the testimony of the trialists, it already has worked. Time will tell on how well it works sitewide, but I suspect only the most determined of troll groups will not be deterred.

Troll groups having no idea their dislikes would be hidden can’t cause that much damage. Now, knowing they are hidden, you can just attack like before, only know there’s no one to defend you because no one knows it’s happening.

You were probably one of the people upset when IMDB got rid of their cesspool of a comment section. I actually like IMDBs comment srction. It was a way to connect with people about more obscure shows. The Famous Five 1978 and Renford Rejects boards were two I often visited to chat about the shows.

Im surprised they haven't done that to please some of bigger companies or channel so people can't call them out on their bullshit when they do something stupid. I mean they have. A lot of hte big companies just flat out deny comments to be put on their videos. mostly because the comments sections tend to be trashfires...

And if your response to that in general is “Well, YouTube should make them less trash fires”…yeah. Agreed. But companies like that don’t actually want to deal with stuff like this 99% of the time despite the little money it’d likely cost compared to their profits. But as seen, it took ages for this to happen at all. So they’ll likely sort that out by the heat death of the universe.

This is about youtube being embarrassed of people noticing their unwillingness or inability to do much about the organised mass dislikes of certain videos for political reasons. The people doing it don't actually care about algorithms or the content, they want to point at the dislikes and pretend their insanity has more support than it has. Take away the visibility of dislikes and brigading slows to a trickle because being seen is the point.
This change wouldn't be happening if it the brigading were confined to women, people of colour and the LGBTQ+ community being affected, unfortunately, youtube would keep on looking the other way and demonetising the victims. Brigade prestige content and they have to act.

Brigade prestige content and they have to act. I also would not be surprised to see pretty good research indicating that hiding a dislike number hurts the incentive for more pile-ons; the trolls will still dislike, but the casual viewer just noticing the ratio is probably far, far less likely to get involved in that kind of stuff now, which should be a benefit to smaller creators. Again, I doubt that's *why* YouTube is doing this, as their motives are never pure, but if there's at least some benefit to be had for people who need it, that's fine by me. Besides, I watch most of my YouTube videos on my smart TV now, so I don't even see the ratio anymore.
