I more or less saw the draw coming, but as it got close, it also occurred to me that scraping against the possibility would be a good way to keep up suspense - nobody thought Hangman was losing the belt so soon, so a draw was more believable than a Danielson win, so the final few minutes felt like a race between a Hangman win and a draw. Even as the spots slowed down, I wondered if they were going for a photo finish.
Just tremendous stuff, and I loved all 60 minutes.

I find it fitting that, with ROH having its possible last show ever over the weekend, that this match felt like a tribute to that company. ROH elevated the 60 minute time limit draw to an artform and this match just happened to feature two noted ROH alumni in Danielson and Page.
Like ROH's 60 minute matches, this was a work of art. The only downside was the commercial breaks being really disruptive at times, but such is the case when you're on non-premium TV. Can't really do anything about it besides saving it for a PPV.

Stunning match, possibly MOTY. Going to have to think long and hard about whether I prefer this or Okada-Omega II OR Joe-Punk II

Danielson tricked an entire generation of wrestlers to think they could do that
Only the American Dragon can pull that kind of match off.

This story was an incredible piece of work for so many reasons down to its distinct 'chapters' where entirely different focuses of attacks got used that all led to the final climactic minutes, but what I love most is that it continued Hangman's story in a very important way. Getting the title hasn't changed him or made him invincible. He's not a prodigy or a world class anything. He's good, even at his best, he's not so good that he doesn't have weaknesses and can't be picked apart by someone like Bryan. But he has heart. Oh my god he has so much f***ing heart. To get back up, to keep fighting, to avenge his friends, and to hold onto this title. When Omega and Danielson fought to their draw, they were still on their feet, they looked like they could still go. When the match ended, Hangman had Bryan dead to rights, but also, they were both compeltely drained and broken down by that point. Totally different situation across a much different scale of match. It feels like less of a "Who can win?" question than the Omega draw did, and more like "can Hangman get the job done on time" for the rematch, which vitally, continues the story of Hangman and his doubts. Even his first title defense was a brutalizing that he didn't technically win. I don't think he goes into another despair spiral here and I don't particularly want him to, but the follow-up being a clear-headed Hangman who knows what he needs to do and who finds the push to answer those questions? That's what the good cowboy shit is made of. That's the kind of champion Hangman needs to be, and I love the idea that this can continue on in directions that will continue his story instead of just leaving his anxieties at the door now that he's beat Kenny. As far as if Hangman can 'hang' in a 60 minute match or not? Man, I remember the first ten minutes of every Omega/Okada match in the title feud period except for the G1 match where Kenny explicitly came out screaming and intentionally put Okada away as hard and fast as he could because of the lower time limit for G1 matches. If you're going an hour, you're going to pick your spots and take it slow, even in the early goings. That doesn't say anything bad about Hangman. Dude delivered and hit some really big spots really late into the match. Go watch Impact's Rebellion this year and see Kenny carry Rich Swann's corpse to a twenty three minute match if you wanna see someone who can't keep up. Can't be summed up any better than this. Match was a masterpiece and so was this post.

It definitely did the two things it set out to do: Establish that Hangman can have great long matches, and that Danielson is the best in the world, no matter the match length.

Great match that left me wanting a sequel with a decisive finish, and Danielson's jumping jacks were amusing.

It feels silly to talk about Bryan Danielson exceeding expectations, but he really has exceeded my expectations with this run.
And any doubts about Page being able to hang with the best should be gone at this point.

And yeah, this is why Bryan Danielson is one of my favorites of all time. One of the best to ever do it.

Yeah, I mentioned this in the live thread and it's totally true. It's almost like the WWE found success with the Attitude Era by bringing ECW mainstream and AEW is finding success by bringing ROH-style athleticism to a mainstream audience.

Currently has a 9.42 on Cagematch, fifth highest ranked fight of the year. Not what I was expecting from a Dynamite title defence.

Doesn't get much better than that. The stuff AEW puts on free TV blows my mind.

I think it was when Bryan was beating Hangman against the post that I realized it was going to be a draw.

Never been so conflicted on a match, absolutely brilliant and the most sensible result. Yet because of that it was predictable. The ad-break rests are always a pet peeve but it becomes even more phoney when there's so many of them. Throw in the usual loose rules and it kills the suspension of disbelief.
But damn Danielson has been amazing, comes in late and is likely to take up at least half of many MotY votes. If he keeps this up for a full calender year in 2022 it could be one of the best in-ring years anybody has ever had.

I think it says a lot about his legacy and him as a wrestler that he can have two highly regarded matches on the big stages of one company, take a several month break, sign to another company where he could easily rest on his laurels a bit more but turn around and go “No, actually, give me Kenny Omega, Minoru Suzuki and Adam Page in my first 4 months, please. Oh, Aaron Solo on Dark because why not?”

Part of what makes Danielson great is that he's not just a savant, but he's a weirdo eccentric savant who is just as interested in what wrestling at its greatest can be as he is in doing weirdo f***shit for the sake of pushing the art form's boundaries out a little bit. He just approaches wrestling differently, and it's part of what makes him so f***ing good.

I want to see a rematch of this. I want to see a rematch of Omega vs. Danielson. And somehow, despite my general distaste of three-ways, I also really want to see Hangman vs. Danielson vs. Omega.
