Absolutely flew by, was gripped by the balls for the vast majority of it. Danielson is absolutely phenomenal, there are moments where he reminds me of Curt Hennig so much.

Damn, maybe it was the commercial breaks happening at the right times (e.g. like when Hangman was on the floor selling his head getting cut), but I felt the exact opposite: a lot of 60 minute matches have slowdown periods, but this one went hard and heavy for the vast majority of its time, which made it fly by, and I went into the match having had it spoiled that it went the full hour. I do want to emphasize what others have been saying already, and repeat something I've said before: I cannot tell you how badly I missed having Bryan Danielson around. He had plenty of great moments in his WWE run, no doubt about it, and there were times he achieved full on greatness there, but now we're getting the American @#$%ing Dragon, and it's as if he never left the indies and he's still 25 years old or something, because holy shit, the guy went sixty minutes but you could just tell he could go another full hour if he wanted to, the man is an absolute freak of nature and a master in-ring storyteller. And full credit to Hangman; he played his role amazingly well, to the point that it's going to be nearly impossible to imagine him ever turning heel during his AEW career. Ending it on him having the match won but just running out of time to prove he can beat the almighty Dragon leaves us something to look forward to in the hopefully not-too-distant future. I've had multiple slower paced 60 minute matches that I've enjoyed, Joe vs. Punk II being high on that list, but matches like this and Okada/Omega II are just another gear in terms of intensity that very few wrestlers can maintain for an hour. There is zero shame in not being able to do that, because, I repeat, Bryan Danielson, Kenny Omega, and Kazuchika Okada are all freaks of nature. I'll say it 'til I'm blue in the face: I really want a heel vs. heel faction war between the Pinnacle and Team Taz, with Team Taz playing slightly more babyface. Even MJF doesn't want that smoke with HOOK. Also, the "18 seconds" thing just makes me realize that I wish Sheamus were in better shape health-wise. Not that AEW is short on big brawlers who get their shit in, but for a while at least, Sheamus was the best big man brawler in the WWE. I liked the match because I thought it told a really good story. Bryan Danielson is a technical wizard, a sadist, the American Suzuki, in a way. But the Cowboy held his own and came ready for him. He went for his leg, Danielson went for his shoulder. Hangman is the bigger athlete, but not once did they try any of the tired "bigger man/smaller man" tropes. Bryan looked like a heel, but unlike most smaller heels, he didn't look like a chickenshit heel. He looked like a final boss in a video game who doesn't NEED size, because his stats are so lopsided otherwise. It was just a classic story, but a fresh one, all at the same time. The best work of Sheamus’ career has been the last 2-3 years. He got in great shape after those reports started surfacing about his neck being in rough shape.

Apparently Meltzer gave it five stars, which means Bryan finally, after decades of work, has more five star matches than Lars Sullivan.

Watched it again and it's just reinforced how badly Bret Hart was screwed at Mania 12 - if the match is a draw, the champion retains. There should never have been overtime!
