You swerved me. I was expecting #1 to be FF9 and saw you list…..that.
Of course, regarding FF9 there were things that could have been improved upon, but the game just was so damned good. The characters, story, settings, and side characters were all fantastic.

Like I said earlier, Final Fantasy IX is (also) my favorite and it getting the top spot satisfies me! I'll re-check the whole list next week and pick a game that I'll try to complete by next month...

I came in here hoping FF9 was in the top 20 and now I'm ecstatic at it being number 1. The most underrated RPG ever. Due to your great taste I'm going to have to play all these RPGs now. This is a great list judging the ones I've played.

Ya know, thinking about it, I never did finish FF9. Liked the game, but I had the game at pretty much the end of my PS1. Just didn't load games anymore. After a point, set my PS1 up in a slightly inclined position, and that seemed to work, then all the way to a position where it was vertical to load games.
Maybe it was because the discs were pirated, as it was the norm for most part here. Even the big toy store in the biggest mall here openly sold pirated PS1 games in that era, and you really didn't think about it as a kid. Heck, then I wondered why on video game magazines the advertisements for games were so expensive, when you can get a PS1 game for less than a dollar per disc.
Anyway, was playing FF9 when my PS1 was near kaput. Some FMVs crashed the game, and I wouldn't have gotten started on the game up until I realized you can skip the movie scenes by opening the PS1 disc to stop it running then closing it again to skip the scene.
Once I finish X/X-2, I reckon I ought to get FF9 for realsies. Experience the end for myself.
For now, here's Korone the VTuber as she finishes the game.

Thanks for putting the time in to do this. I've enjoyed reading about the games as I've never been a big JRPG fan but there's a few here I'll have to dig into...I tried back in the day to play FF7 but it never gripped me. I'm now playing the remake and I'm loving it, I'll probably give persona 5 a go next so any beginners tips (never played the series) would be most welcome. Cheers again.

I'm almost 30 hours in but I think I can help with this. Rave shared this with me on the PlayStation thread www.thegamer.com/persona-5-royal-april-walkthrough-guide/ I'm on the third month and this guide has helped me keep on top of all the social things. There is no story spoilers (that I have seen) and it gives you no details on your enemies. Little to no help on bosses and let's you work out dungeons yourself

Without spoiling anything, my advice would be to make sure you have multiple saves because there are points in the game where you'll basically be at the point of no return, and you might end up screwing yourself. I'm currently on my third playthrough and even I did it. It was pretty embarrassing, lol.

7. Persona 3 I never thought there would be a series that would compete for my love with Final Fantasy, but Persona proved me wrong! And it all started with 3. It's just such a cool idea. You got to school in the day and hang out with your friends, and then fight monsters at night. You form social links which in turn powers you up in battle. You increase your stats, such as intelligence or charm, by studying or drinking at the cafe. You've got to think about how to spend your time wisely because of the limited amount of time you have. Should you do this or that today? It's all just so addicting. If that wasn't addicting enough, you collect Personas and level them up. The battle system is great—hit the weakness of the enemy, knock them down and get an extra turn. Knock them all down and you get an all-out attack. There's definitely some challenge here—not so much the storyline bosses, but the mini-bosses, I found. By the way, you don't control your teammates in this game. Sometimes it gets annoying when they do something you don't want them to do, but, overall, I didn't find them that bad. The music is incredible, like all the Persona games. I mean, if I listed every song I liked I'd be here all day. The one negative of this game would be the dungeon. Tartarus is very bland and there's not much to it. But it's fine. The battle system is so fun, you just put up with it. I believe you can get the game digitally on PS3. Unfortunately, the physical copies are extremely expensive. The original might not be too bad, but FES and the PSP version are crazy. My favorite Persona game and second favorite game overall after only Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

P.S. No mention of Suikoden 2. You're banned. P.P.S. It seems that I'm not allowed to do that for that reason. I ban the entire forum for disagreeing in general. Serious P.P.P.S. Good job. Always fun to see a list that gets complete. I've only played Suikoden IV and I believe that's considered the worst one. I didn't play it long enough to give it a fair ranking, though. IV is not bad in itself. It's just kinda clunky when compared to the others, plus the story is incomplete. Gotta play the semi-sequel Suikoden Tactics for the rest. II and V are the best of the series. It sucks we'll likely never see a sixth. III's the furthest out chronologically and there's still unresolved stuff from that. I wanna go to Harmonia.
