7. Persona 3 I never thought there would be a series that would compete for my love with Final Fantasy, but Persona proved me wrong! And it all started with 3. It's just such a cool idea. You got to school in the day and hang out with your friends, and then fight monsters at night. You form social links which in turn powers you up in battle. You increase your stats, such as intelligence or charm, by studying or drinking at the cafe. You've got to think about how to spend your time wisely because of the limited amount of time you have. Should you do this or that today? It's all just so addicting. If that wasn't addicting enough, you collect Personas and level them up. The battle system is great—hit the weakness of the enemy, knock them down and get an extra turn. Knock them all down and you get an all-out attack. There's definitely some challenge here—not so much the storyline bosses, but the mini-bosses, I found. By the way, you don't control your teammates in this game. Sometimes it gets annoying when they do something you don't want them to do, but, overall, I didn't find them that bad. The music is incredible, like all the Persona games. I mean, if I listed every song I liked I'd be here all day. The one negative of this game would be the dungeon. Tartarus is very bland and there's not much to it. But it's fine. The battle system is so fun, you just put up with it. I believe you can get the game digitally on PS3. Unfortunately, the physical copies are extremely expensive. The original might not be too bad, but FES and the PSP version are crazy. I played the PSP, version. Funny memory about that, as on the way to work I was playing the game when I got almost robbed. Got knife pointed at me and everything. That said, my PSP was so old at that point where I had to replace one of the shoulder buttons with whatever I had at the time plus duct tape that they didn't bother taking it. Phone wasn't a smart phone at the time so it wasn't stolen either. The other people in the vehicle that were commuting at the time didn't fare as well, in terms of things taken. Aside from that, the PSP version allowed you to take control of the other characters in battle, which I guess made things easier. P.S. Mitsuru > every other girl in P3, as I recall. Considering how much the PSP version is worth these days, they should've taken that, at least.

5. Final Fantasy VII I guess this game is predictably high. Again, what can I say about FFVII that everyone else hasn't? It's an all-around amazing game. I guess the main reason I don't have it higher is that I have more nostalgia for the other FFs since I played them before this. I do think disc 3 is weak. The Northern Crater is kind of a lame final dungeon, the Sephiroth fight is cool but his Supernova attack is too long and he spams it like crazy, and then to top it off, the ending is a letdown. Some people say the game has aged poorly, but I can play it today and have just as much fun. It's an excellent game but not quite my favourite FF. Cid f***ing Highwind best character, by the way.

No lie. First experience with FF7 was hate. At least dislike. It was my first RPG, and games before I played were pretty much platformers and beat and ups and similar. No RPG elements, and to top it off my grasp of English wasn't that good, on a game that way too much dialog for my tiny brat mind. Not to mention that I have a sibling and thus we take turns and I wanna play Skullmonkeys damn it not watch sibling play the game.
Started getting a bit interested as the game began moving out of Midgard - and I credit myself being the one who beat Reno after accidentally figuring out that I can free the party members from his one attack by attacking them. By the time the party faced off against the boss Demons Gate near the end of disc 1 I was the one playing.
All in all, FF7 was pretty much my first RPG ever. And again, my understanding of English wasn't as good. I more or less understood the plot well enough, but certain simple mechanics of the game I didn't grasp at the time. Like, stats. Strength is understandable, but at the time, what the heck was dexterity? I ain't reading a dictionary for that! Must have been a made up video game word anyway, I thought at the time.
Really, me beating the game at that age when I was a lot younger baffles me to this day. To give an example, I didn't even connect the dots that giving a character all the materia, especially the summon ones, lowered HP - leading to Cloud facing off the last boss with less than 1000 max hit points.
And this was a time before internet game guides for me. Was quite jealous that my cousins had a game shark and could summon knights of round which was the coolest freaking thing ever. Still, I beat that game with no cheats except for sheer stubborn grit.
Did get Vincent thanks to a really iffy video game guide bought from a guy in school. How iffy? It had thumbnail sized nude pictures of the FF7 ladies, and some others, that's how iffy. And I ain't lying at all.
Anyways, point is that FF7 was my gateway to RPGs/JRPGs. In a way, that helped me read the English language a bit better, and led the way to other games. Perhaps it led the way for me online. Just a possibility, but without it may not have been as confident to make my first few posts at a forum elsewhere, which would have led to me being here.
So, yeah. Blame FF7 for eventually leading me to become a mod here and lording it over you unwashed masses.
Also, a few years ago I played FF7 again. Beat Emerald and Ruby weapon. Suck on that, young me.

6. Persona 5 Pretty much everything I said about Persona 3 applies to this game, but with improvements in almost every area. The palaces are a massive upgrade from Tartarus, having their own unique styles and objectives to complete. The battle system is, again, typical Persona fair. This game just oozes style, though, so everything is flashy and smooth. Love that characters get their own unique win pose after an all-out attack. The difficulty is a little disappointing, though, since a big thing about this game is gaining that preemptive attack. It's the only Persona game I play on hard. The characters are great with Makoto and Futaba being my favs. A criticism, though, is that Haru doesn't get enough screen time. I really like the story about how you're punishing corrupt adults. I liked how your fame increased the more missions you pulled off. Man, what can I even say about the music? The battle theme, the boss theme, Rivers in the Desert, Whims of Fate, Life Will Change, etc. My only real complaints would be about the pacing. The game takes way too long to start and it takes way too long to end. I was begging for the game to finish by the end. I won't spoil but the last 15 or 20 hours are just unnecessary, in my opinion. But everything in between is just incredible. I've just beaten the first palace in Persona 5 Royal and I love it (Even if I had to restart after 11 hours in as I messed up my save and didn't use the other save slots before that). Never played a RPG that wasn't the Pokemon or the Digimon Story games (DS, Dusk/Dawn and the Cyber Sleuth games). Honestly after I beat this game I'm going to try and play the other Persona games and then I will probably have a look back through your list to see if anything else takes my fancy

4. Final Fantasy X I'm gonna start with the negatives to mix it up. This game is extremely linear. Even as a kid, I noticed it and it bothered me. The characters are kind of a mixed bag. I'm one of dozens of Tidus fans and one of millions of Auron fans. The others I can take them or leave them. Seymour is a pretty weak villain, although I do like his backstory. His design is lame, his goal is lame, and you beat him, like, four times. C'mon, he's not threatening anymore after the second time. The minigames are awful, aside from Blitzball. I will forever defend Blitzball and don't really understand the hate. As for the positives, I really like the story. It has that wacky Final Fantasy stuff but it's easy to follow. Tidus definitely helps in that regard, because he's the one that asks the questions, instead of having a datalog. XIII needed a Tidus. And there are lots of emotional moments, like the ending which still gets me in the feels. But the standout is the battle system. I like how even against random mobs you have to use your brain to beat them. Yeah, it's not rocket science (hit flying fiend with Blitzball, fast fiend with Tidus, etc) but it is compared to some of the other FF games. Status effects are actually useful, which is always nice. And they added another layer of strategy with some boss fights where you gain an extra action, such as interacting with an object.

3. Persona 4 My favourite Persona game! It improved on everything from 3, and I feel like it outdoes 5 in a few things, too. I just love the vibe of this game. It's so upbeat, despite the fact that the game is about a serial killer. But the characters, the setting and the music all come together to create a really nice atmosphere. The story is a whodunit and I was invested from start to finish. The game does do the whole 'it was this guy!' a few too many times for my liking, but, overall, it's a fun ride. I love these characters. Chie, Yukiko, Kanji, Naoto, human Teddie, Nanako, etc, etc. They're all full of personality and humour, and they have great banter. The music! The Almighty, Reach Out to the Truth, I'll Face Myself, Heaven, Heartbreak, Heartbreak, etc, etc. I'll be here all day. The battle system has some improvements, as well, like being able to control all your characters, and being able to guard. It's challenging, too. Out of 3, 4 and 5, I'd say this is definitely the most challenging. Dungeons are much better than 3. Admittedly, still nowhere near Persona 5's. Social Links are improved. You can now form bonds with your playable characters which unlock new abilities in battle. Unlike 5, this game doesn't overstay its welcome. It does take a while to get going like 5, though, but not nearly as long. This game is just perfect. I can't think of any flaws. Honestly, this was so close to being number one, but it just missed out. And I haven't even played Golden!

Screw it. It's two games in one bundle, and I'm just about finished with Fallout New Vegas. Got me FFX/X-2. When it came to the FF7, 8, and X, sibling played most of the story bits before handing over the reins to me, though in the case of X sibling went through the entire game, with me spectating. X-2 I did play from start to finish, so might as well experience X as the one doing the gameplay.

By the time FF7 came out I had been playing RPGs on my computer since about 84 and had played almost all the big RPGS that the NES got, plus the Phantasy Stars on the Genesis. I got FF7 about a week after it was released. First night I had it I played it for 6 hours straight. Didnt use a guide or look anything up. Made it to the final disc and realized that I really hadn't been enjoying the game for the past disc and just quit playing it. Got in FF8 the year it came out as a Xmas gift. Played it for a few hours didn't like it. And ended up giving it to a buddy. And OP I've been enjoying this thread cause besides teh Dragon Quest games I haven't played many modern RPGs since FF7.

2. Final Fantasy VIII The most polarising FF. You either love it or hate it. Well, I love it and I'll defend this game forever. It was the first RPG I ever played, so it holds a special place in my heart. The game is extremely flawed, not gonna lie, but I love it regardless. Firstly, I love the setting. This game has some of the most beautiful locations I've seen in a game. If I had to live in a FF world, it would be this one (and in Balamb). In my opinion, this FF has the best OST of all of them. Force Your Way, The Extreme, Maybe I'm a Lion, The Oath, etc, etc. Although, I will say the battle theme and the world map themes are weak. When it comes to the characters, I think Squall is an amazing character. He's just so relatable and his reactions to everything are so realistic. I really like his chemistry with Rinoa. Some people say that his actions at the beginning of disc 3 were abrupt, but I think it's the case of you don't know what you've got until it's gone. Unfortunately, the other characters outside of those two don't get as much attention. Selphie's great, though. I personally hate Irvine. Even Squall doesn't like that guy. There are a couple of moments where he forgets Irvine even exists. And, of course, Laguna is great. How can you not love Laguna? Fujin's cool, too. Can't forget her. This game has so many epic moments. The opening, the battle of the gardens, Esthar, going into space, etc. Ultimecia's Castle is the greatest final dungeon I've ever seen. The design, the music, the gameplay. It's just so good. Triple Triad is great... well until they start adding all of those annoying rules. But what makes the game so fun for me is the junction system. This gets a lot of hate and I kind of get it. You can make your characters extremely op pretty easily. But I love how flexible it is. I've played this game more than any and it's because of this system. I can customise my characters however I want. Every time I play this game, I can do something a little differently. When it comes to drawing magic, I feel people get really hyperbolic about it. You don't have to sit there and draw 100 spells. First of all, you don't need 100 of one spell, anyway, that's just overkill. Secondly, you can refine items into spells, instead. At most, I draw once in a battle. Maybe twice if there's a really good spell. The hate is just really overblown, in my opinion. So I think that's about it. A flawed masterpiece.

I wasn't too impressed with 8 when it first came out, still enjoyed it but I think 7 was a hard act to follow. During lockdown in 2020 I picked up the remastered reduced on the switch eshop and had a blast with it. Got the junctioning sorted in my head and didn't really need to rely on the summonings.

Final Fantasy VIII is my favorite game that should've been better. I love the setting, the concept, Triple Triad, them getting rid of grinding. The music is excellent, it has some great story themes and it likely was the first love story I witnessed in a video game. A remake would be much appreciated.

1. Final Fantasy IX Oh, alright, I'll stop messing around. IX is my favourite of all time. I wish I had something more unpredictable at number one, but what can you do? Is IX perfect? Not quite. The battle system is slow and doesn't require much strategy. In fact, most of the moves in the game are useless (why would anyone use Lucky 7?). Trance is a really cool idea but poorly executed. I guess because FFVIII's limit breaks were so OP they wanted to tone it down. Trance just activates at the most inconvenient times, it doesn't stay activated stay after battle, and some of them are just useless. I mean, how specific is Quina's? And Garnet's is just... wtf? That aside, this game is amazing. It has so many memorable, funny and emotional moments. The whole opening with I Want to be Your Canary, Vivi and Quina's marriage, the love poem, the You Are Not Alone scene, Bahamut versus Alexander. The ending is so bittersweet and is probably the best FF ending (X is close). The characters are hilarious, charming and unique. And I'm just talking about the side characters. I always joked that you could replace the main characters with the side characters and you'd still have an amazing main party. But, yeah, Zidane is a great protagonist. He's funny and he's upbeat, and he just wants to help out his buds. Vivi is just incredible. Steiner is the man. Freya is so cool. Eiko, honestly, might be the funniest character. I never really noticed until my last playthrough how funny she is. I love Quina and Amarant, too, even if they're kind of pointless. Kuja is a great villain, who the game somehow succeeds in making him sympathetic at the end. Do I even need to say anything about the music, at this point? FF music is always top class. So, there is my favourite JRPG of all time! Thanks for checking out my list. Hopefully, you find some games you've never heard of before and check them out.

Another game that I picked up during lockdown on the switch estore. At the time I had a thread on here which I updated with my thoughts as I progressed through the game. I had no memory of most of it from when I first played it when it was released, so it was kinda fresh at the time. Even 20 years later it still was a very visually beautiful game. Never worked out why they used the word bastard so much in it.

VIII. Screw Triple Triad... when the area had the rule where your deck was randomized, and it spread forcing me to reload. Didn't have as difficult of a time with the game as FF7, partially since I've played a few more RPGs since then, and while my English comprehension wasn't as sharp enough yet I understood gameplay elements a bit more. This led me to cheesing the game eventually. Irvine with his AP ammo, converting the Bahamut card into megaelixirs, letting Gilgamesh deal with Seifer while I spent the battle drawing the aura spell off him to use for Irvine spamming AP ammo later on.
At the very least, I understood that higher stats was better so more or less I managed to give the party members some boosts via junctioning spells to their stats.
Plot wise, again, I won't say that then I understood all of the details as well as I should have. Like for starters didn't really understood that early on in the game that Quistis harbored feelings for Squall. Remember finding out that the party knew each other from childhood and being like "wow!" and a tiny bit later feeling "wait, that seems contrived"... if I actually knew what the word was back then.
I did manage to get my party to level 100, hardly realizing that this made some fights worse. Like those ruby dragons, doing a one hit kill.
All in all, my memories of the game are fond. Also remember staying in a cousins home during summer and getting extra turns in their Playstation by helping them with the game. Already finished the game, but extra turns is extra turns. And since there were four cousins that meant two hours after three hours waiting instead of one hour of playing and four hours waiting.

P.P.S. It seems that I'm not allowed to do that for that reason. I ban the entire forum for disagreeing in general.
Serious P.P.P.S. Good job. Always fun to see a list that gets complete.
