55. Tales of Xillia 2 I guess I'd consider this a hidden gem. I really liked the first game and the sequel was almost as good. I guess the only reason I'd consider it inferior is that it is a sequel, so everything's not as fresh, like the environments. But, yeah, it's a fun game. Three new characters were added and they were all great. They added a lot of personality (or fun gameplay regarding the protagonist). Speaking of the gameplay, the new protag is a blast to play. The only issue for me is that he's pretty integral to the battles, so you shouldn't really play other characters. But I did it anyway. The game was also really addicting, because (from what I can recall) there were several points where you had to make a certain amount of money to move on with the story. Some people might find that annoying, but I weirdly enjoyed it. I guess you shouldn't play this game unless you play the first, so if you do, I definitely recommend the sequel.

54. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII A surprisingly enjoyable game. I wasn't expecting to like it but here we are. I liked how it mixed things up from the other two games. The battle system was good stuff, and job systems always guarantee a fun time. The fact that the game has a time limit always had me on edge and made the experience more enjoyable to me. Like, every decision I made mattered. And sidequests actually mattered, too, because they gave you more time (even if they were 90% fetch quests). The story is bonkers, as expected. Who knows what's going on. Also, it has Lumina. Lumina's great. If you hated XIII and XIII-2, you should give this a shot.

53. Kingdom Hearts II Another controversial placing, I guess. Kingdom Hearts II was my number one 'game everyone loves except you' before Nier came out. But I do like the game. It is fun, overall, but I have some issues with it. Firstly, I hate the opening two or three hours (though, I enjoy it more after playing/watching some of the other games). The worlds weren't as interesting as the first game's. I don't care about Tron or Pirates of the Caribbean. Speaking of the latter, it's one of the most annoying worlds in a KH game. Atlantica sucks once again, but at least it's optional. The story's confusing, of course, but, again, it makes more sense after playing/watching the other games. But the battle system is really fun, so that almost makes up for the negatives.

52. Jade Cocoon: Story of the Tamamayu This was one of the first RPGs I played and I love it to this day. The monster merging was really fun. The music was beautiful, and I loved that Studio Ghibli art style. As for negatives, it has those classic tank controls, and the game is a bit too short for an RPG.

51. Kingdom Hearts III Man, this was a tough one to rank. A lot of people were disappointed with this game. I suppose I wasn't quite as hyped up as everyone else. The only part that really disappointed me was the Frozen world. I didn't like how they pretty much crammed all of the story in at the end, too. The battle system was basically just spam like crazy, but it looked great. They finally made Gummi Ship traversal fun. Pirates of the Caribbean became my least favourite world in II to maybe my favourite world in any KH game. Toy Story world was great, too. I've only played the game once, so maybe it will get better or worse on repeated playthroughs. Who knows. But I thought it was a lot of fun... I just really wish you could fight with Elsa.

50. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep Honestly, this and III are pretty interchangeable, but one of them had to be above the other. I thought having three playable characters was a fun idea, Aqua being my favourite and Terra being my least favourite. I really liked the combat and how you could basically customise your combos. In fact, all of the new gameplay mechanics they added were fun, like Surge, Focus and D-Link (not sure if they were in some of the previous games). The board game was okay. It was a little addicting for a while. I'm not sure if I fully understood it, to be honest. Anyway, one more KH to go (haven't played any others)!

49. Pokemon Black and White More Pokemon! And it's more of the same. Still really fun games, though. A lot of the new Pokemon got criticized for their designs, but I actually quite liked a lot of them (Watchog most underrated Pokemon).

48. Legend of Legaia In this game, you control three martial artists, and the battle system requires that you select directions so you can string together combos. String together the right combos and you'll discover new special attacks, which was always hype. The game also had summons, though they weren't exactly as spectacular looking as the ones in FF, but still cool, nevertheless. This was a great game, but, unfortunately, it's very expensive now. I sold it a long time ago like a dummy. But if you have cash to burn, then you should give it a shot.

47. Ring Fit Adventure This is just such a good idea. An RPG where you defeat enemies with exercises. Not only is it good for losing weight, but it's also a really solid game. The enemies are weak to certain exercises, some exercises hit multiple enemies, there are smoothies that increase your damage and defence. There's some decent strategy to the fights. Your legs are killing you, but you want to deal as much damage as possible to the boss. It really motivates you to give your best. The game also has a lot of humour, too. I'm hoping for sequels because there's even more they can do with this idea.

46. Pokemon Yellow This one might be a surprising placement. But, yeah, I really like Yellow. You see, with this game, you're supposed to play it like the anime and that's what I liked to do. You don't catch a Mankey to defeat Brock, you defeat him with Pikachu's thundershock! Okay, I guess you can't follow the anime that well. Butterfree's confusion was good enough, though. I even caught a Pidgeotto over a Pidgey, which was really annoying. And Jessie and James were in the game! Forgot about that. This game is great.

The music was beautiful, and I loved that Studio Ghibli art style. As for negatives, it has those classic tank controls, and the game is a bit too short for an RPG. This is a game I bought a week before I got a PS2, so I didn't get very far. But from what I played, it was a fun game. I've always wanted it to be remastered or something. I remember two being absolute tosh.

45. Dragon Quest VIII So when I was making my list, DQVIII was the game that I had in the middle. It's the game I compared all the other games on my list to so I could decide where to rank them. So that's what I think of DQVIII—it's the most well-rounded JRPG I've played. Its music, graphics, battle system and characters are all well done. I guess there's a couple of reasons I don't have it higher. For one, it only has four playable characters (I know the 2DS version added more, but I haven't played it). Secondly, I feel like the battle system was maybe missing something extra to make it a bit more fun. Also, this game might have the best world map theme ever. So good.

44. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance Why do I have this ranked over the original Tactics? Well, just because I could actually progress in this one because it wasn't as hard. Anyway, this is a really fun game. The story's not great (again, not a patch on the original's) but the gameplay is. f*** the judges, though. I think this was my first tactical RPG, too.

I owned both the original and Advance and I remember never getting very far in Advance because I thought the snowball fight was lame lol

43. Valkyria Chronicles II I'm a big fan of this series. I think all the VC games are great, but if I had to choose, then I'd say this one is the weakest. The story is the whole 'class of misfits' vs. 'class of popular, rich kids'. It's generic but still fun. I do like the characters. The side characters, especially, had more depth than they did in the first game. They all have their own personality quirks that effect them in battle, and a lot of them are hilarious. Gameplay's great, of course. It's strategic, challenging and tense. I wasn't a fan of the fact your chars couldn't permanently die in this one. It was always devastating when that happened in the first game (RIP Aika).

42. Final Fantasy V FFV is so underrated. The job system and the characters are so fun. Yeah, it has problems, like the story isn't too interesting, and the villain isn't that strong. Maybe FFIV is better overall, but, for me, V is just more fun.

I wasn't a fan of the fact your chars couldn't permanently die in this one. It was always devastating when that happened in the first game (RIP Aika). The individual quotes they gave when kicking the bucket permanently was the real stab in the heart, made worse by the fact that in VC4 the dead character would bequeath an item to the person they were closest to in the unit.

Maybe FFIV is better overall, but, for me, V is just more fun. I think FF5 got hurt a lot by an initial really bad domestic release on the Playstation. It was buggy as hell and had a horrible localization. FFV Advance for the GBA plays a lot better and has a vastly improved localization that does wonders for the story and characters. Yeah, its story isn't a gripping story of personal redemption like IV or an en epic with an ensemble cast like VI, but it's got a lot of charm.

41. Tales of Arise Probably the most recent release on my list, Arise has fun, flashy combat which is enhanced by its great graphics. It does have flaws, like the characters being kind of bland (though, I liked Rinwell and Law), not enough enemy types, and the second half of the game has way too many cutscenes. But I just couldn't put the game down, mostly thanks to the combat being so fun.
