58. The Heavenly Kid (1985) 59. Streets of Fire (1984)And on we go with 80's hallucination theater with this bit of insanity. I'm not gonna spoil too much, because this really is a movie you need to see for yourself to appreciate, but imagine if someone mashed together The Batman, The Warriors and Grease, and told the story as a neo-noir, almost cyberpunk musical. Well that's this amazingly underrated movie. I have no idea how this isn't better known and considered a tentpole 80's classic.

Repeated Viewings:
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids Honey, I Blew Up the Kid
After buying these on Blu Ray off of Ebay, I had an itch to watch both of these. I still enjoy them, even though I can see that the second movie is inferior to the first one. That doesn't mean that I don't enjoy the movie, however. Hell, even when watching the second one, I appreciate the use of practical effects, and watching them on Blu-ray brought the effects to light. Hell, it wasn't hard to see watching them on a standard definition DVD a couple of weeks ago.
If only the Blu-ray copies had extras on them, like the making-of specials, as well as some commentary tracks. I would hope one day, especially if the reboot is still in the works.

55. The Man From Toronto
Kevin Hart plays a goofy, bumbling businessman who gets mixed up with a ruthless hit man. The story was pretty good. Woody Harrelson was great. Kevin Hart was annoying.

121. Rashomon (1950) - Watched this on HBO Max. I was initially going to watch Seven Samurai, but then I saw how long it was, I decided to save that for another day. I managed to come across other films by Akira Kurosawa on HBO Max, I wanted something shorter and something to introduce me to his style. I had read that he had done other films before this one, but this film is one of his more noteworthy titles. Now that I saw it, I can see why.
For a movie that was likely shot in 1949, this film had some great cinematography that went with its visual storytelling. Many of the scenes were well-shot, and I saw that many of the scenes worked well, whether it's the different sides to the main story or the scenes with the main characters discussing what happened. They all worked well with the script it was given. As I was watching, I saw that there was some symbolic and allegorical subtext that relates to the main plot, as well as something deeper when you look closely at it. I wonder if any of Kurosawa's other films follow that style of storytelling that blends in with his filmmaking style.
While on the subject of Kurosawa, I have noticed that many of his films were remade. I recall reading that A Fistful of Dollars was a remake of Yojimbo. The same could be said about Last Man Standing (1996) being a remake of that same film. I was also aware of that The Magnificent Seven was a remake of Seven Samurai. I wonder if I should check out his other films before seeing the remakes.
Back on the subject of this movie, it had a lot of brilliant storytelling and excellent cinematography to go with it. I see why this movie is legendary.

57. The Wraith (1986)So lately I've kinda been wanting to hunt down old 80's movies that I only vaguely remember and honestly thought I hallucinated. I'm starting with this one, which is on YouTube for free right now. For those that don't remember, Charlie Sheen is Jamie/Jake/The Wraith. After being killed by a gang of car thieves he returns to life, now dressed like the love child of Seven of Nine and a Cylon, looking for vengeance and to rescue his girlfriend, driving a car that looks like KITT if he was designed by Pops Racer. This is a very cheesy, very goofy movie. Basically everybody in it played their parts about as over-the-top as they could, except for Sheen who looked like he was sleepwalking through most of it. It also had a cool soundtrack and a surprising amount of naked boobies for a PG rated movie. It's fun over-all, but it's the kind of flick that you enjoy best when you accidentally stumble across it on basic cable at 1AM. Haha, The Wraith f***ing rules.

58. The Heavenly Kid (1985) 59. Streets of Fire (1984) 60. Teen Witch (1989)And I finish 80's Hallucination Theater with this mess of a movie. I think this one is pretty well known, but I'll give a description anyways - social outcast high school girl discovers she's a witch, uses her powers to become the most popular girl in school, realizes its not all its cracked up to be, Dick Sargent is awesome. This was a chore to sit through. From the opening musical number that makes the Grease 2 bowling song seem genius in retrospect to the ending that basically resolves almost nothing, you can feel there's a decent movie in there trying to get out, but it's just so bogged down with boring teen angst and really weird scenes that leave you dumbfounded. I just could not enjoy it. Top that.

I didn't totally love some of the late twists but this was an engaging story topped with some tremendous acting. I could watch Zoey Deutch in anything. [***½]

56. Jurassic World Dominion
The stars of the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World series get mixed up in a convoluted dinosaur/bio genetics storyline. People run from dinosaurs. People get eaten by dinosaurs. Ian Malcolm spouts gibberish. GIANT FLAMING LOCUSTS!!! A silly story that is lots of fun to watch.
And Blue should have thrown a dead rabbit on Owen’s car to say “Thank you”.

#370 - Toy Story 2 (Disney+)
*15th Viewing (spitballing here)
One of the greatest films I've ever seen. The animation style holds up, the way the roles of Woody and Buzz are kind of flipped from the first movie is fantastic, and it hits you hard emotionally even after all these years. [*****]
#371 - Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Disney+)

Okay, so I liked this way more the second time around. I had issues with the pacing of some of the flashbacks but that didn't bug me this go around. I still don't love the big CGI dragon stuff but everything else works. The characters are great, this has one of my favorite MCU scores, and I think the non-CGI fight scenes are the franchise's best. 122. Power Rangers (2017) - Watched this on Blu Ray. Watching video essays on this film recently gave me the itch to watch this, and I recall seeing this in theaters on opening day back in 2017. Granted, a lot of the promotion at the time gave me a feel that it would be different from the show that I watched all the time as a child. Yes, I was a part of the Power Ranger craze that went around during the 1990s. I also will say that it had been four years since the last time I watched it in 2018. So does it hold up? Well, let's see.
Having seen this before, I knew what I was getting, but after watching those video essays, it matched my viewpoint on how I took things when I watched those other times. Unlike the old TV show, I noticed that this was taken in a different direction with an ensemble cast as they weren't a group of friends already, but rather characters from different walks of life that somehow banded together and formed a bond as the film progressed. A lot of the film focused primarily on the characters and the origins on how they became the titular Power Rangers. Any action was saved for the finale, but I'll get to that. Really, I actually did not mind, if actually liked where this film went with its focus on the characters. A lot of character development was shown, as well as sequences with the characters bonding, and the actors had that chemistry that you really felt that their connection was genuine, especially in the scene when they were talking around the fire. Plus, the gray color tone added to the overall feel.
Also, I did appreciate that there were some callbacks to the old show. For example, each of the characters rocking the colors that corresponded with which ranger they were. There were some nice callbacks as well. As for the climactic action scene, I found it enjoyable, especially with the Rangers piloting their individual Zords in the battle, which wasn't seen a lot in the old series. Yes, it could have used more action, but with it being an origin story, I didn't mind how the film went.
I will note that the design for Goldar wasn't that great. I wasn't sure if the model was unfinished or if that was what he was supposed to look like. I'd have preferred look similar to how he looked on the TV series, or at least better than how he looked in this movie. I also thought the Krispy Kreme product placement was a bit over-the-top given that it was added to the plot, but in some ways, it was kind of funny. There also could have been some resolution to some of the character arcs. I noticed that the Blu Ray has a lot of deleted and extended scenes. I might as well check them out.
Overall, I felt that this was an underrated film. I know that this movie flopped at the box office, and really, it was also supposed to start a franchise that was supposedly going to go up to five or six films (!), which obviously won't happen. I know a lot of people are divided when it comes to this film, but with the original plans to start the franchise that will never happen, this wasn't a bad first part. If only this film was more successful. Now I'm kind of in the mood to revisit the 1990s Power Rangers films, and I'm not sure how to feel about it. However, I am more reluctant to revisit "Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie" than "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie," because that Turbo movie sucked, but who knows?

59. Streets of Fire (1984) 60. Teen Witch (1989) 61. Planet of the Apes (2001)So over the last few years I finally managed to track down and watch the original Planet of the Apes movies, as well as the new Caesar trilogy that came out over the last decade. All that kinda got me interested in this one, the odd man out, which I haven't seen since college. Not interested enough to actively seek it out, but when I saw it was available for free on Tubi, I figured I'd give it a watch. Yeah, this is a mess of a movie. Just a collection of goofy scenes, a muddled story and weird sexual tension. And that's not even getting into the mind-numbing "twist" ending. Not something I want to re-visit.
